Sean Michael Lucas is the Senior Minister of First Presbyterian Church, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Prior to this, he served as Chief Academic Officer and associate professor of church history at Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. He received BA and MA degrees from Bob Jones University and his PhD degree from Westminster Theological Seminary.
This is another helpful little intro booklet in the Basics of the Faith series, which are all from an evangelical/reformed perspective. They are designed with the new believer or the person new to or curious about what it means to be Reformed (or reformed evangelical). Not every booklet in this series is equally well written but none are bad or poorly done. This is one of the better ones and I've read about half of them thus far. Our church has made this series part of a lending library for folks as most of our congregation is fairly new to the reformed faith.
Grace is, perhaps, one of the most oft-used words among Christians; certainly the Bible speaks of it repeatedly. But how should we understand it? Lucas attempts to define grace in this booklet, pointing to what grace is (and isn’t) as well as detailing its effects on those who receive it through Christ. He emphasizes how grace is given that we might magnify God, and also because of the mission we have been given as His people.
