Screech Owls #6

Terror in Florida

Rate this book
When Travis, Nish, Sarah, and the rest of the gang pile onto a school bus headed for Florida, the Screech Owls expect a spring break filled with sun, sand, and lots of ice. With luck they may even make it to the peewee tournament final, to be held in the magnificent Ice Palace, home of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning!

Muck and Mr. Dillinger have planned a fun trip. As well as camping and swimming, they’ll get to go to Disney World. Nish, of course, has bigger ideas. With his new X-ray glasses he bought on the “stupid stop” on the way down, he’s hoping to see a lot more than just tourist attractions.

The only trouble is, Nish ends up seeing too much! Travis wasn’t looking forward to riding the Tower of Terror at the Disney-MGM Studios, but it’s going to take even more courage to face this. The Screech Owls have uncovered a plot to terrorize all of America!

Terror in Florida is the sixth book in the Screech Owls Series.

While the main story of the hockey tournament was good and featured accurate and well described hockey as usual, the side stories were lackluster. Part of this book was essentially an Ad for Disney, the hockey team tours disney world and the setting and characters associated with it feature prominently in the side story. The side story also was also a little too farfetched and is starting to feel formulaic. This is I think the third time the team has had run ins with criminals on a tournament trip. Realistically if I send my kid to go on a hockey trip and half the time their lives are danger I'm not sending them on any more trips with the team. The b plot also seemed rushed, not well fleshed out and seemed kind of slipped in there.

Where the story was strong was in the team dynamics, showing how they differed on and off the ice and how conflicts within the team were handled. I think he's making Nish who is supposed to be a central character too unlikeable and didn't address the fact that he was bullying a teammate enough.

The Screech Owls find themselves playing a tournament at Disney World. At the same time, there are hijinks going on at the camp where they are staying. Then, they find out that there are potential assassins lurking in the area who want to kidnap the wife and children of the U.S. President! Can the Screech Owls solve the mystery and win the tournament at the same time?

Well, you probably know the answer. Once again, this is a good read for teens, but a bit pedestrian for adult palates. Unless, of course, you enjoy hockey. Mr. MacGregor writes well about about the games. They are avidly described and all important games (say, like the championship final) are exciting. The characters have gelled--Travis is the conflicted captain who tries to do what is right and represent the team well, but he is hampered by Nish, his best friend, who is always up to something. Sarah is steadfast and reliable--and probably the most sensible person on the team. Lars, Andy, and Data all round out the characters, and they usually tag along to help. This story, at least, was straight-forward, and a bit confusing. The reader did not find out about the President's visit until very late. Now, that sort of makes sense because the Owls would not have known early on, but in terms of story-telling, not knowing why the bad guys were acting the way they were just left me confused.

These are great chapter books for kids who like Hockey!! What fun books with mysteries that are appropriate for kids 9 and up!

Each book has a an exciting hockey game and a mystery to solve. The characters in the books are very relateable for kids of this age and engaging. I love that their are both boys and girls on the team and they all contribute!

The stories also contain lessons on teamwork, sportsmanship and friendship! Terrific lessons for all kids!

There are a few times when I thought the content was a bit off for the age, but then when you compare it to modern video games, movies and tv shows, it was mild. Kids today are ages ahead of their past counterparts and these books reflect that.

Hockey fans will find a lot to love here. The play-by-play is really fun to read even for non-sporties like myself.

Cover Art - Eye catching and easy to tell the theme of the books.

So this one was super cute and I loved Simon and how he was so brave when it counted, swimming down to help Travis and even swimming out with them in the first place.
I cannot stand Nish lately. I kind of hope something happens to him to make him stop being such a bitch. He is so mean to his own teammates and that's something that I cannot stand. You are a team! You act like it!
I guess they don't have an outside antagonist so it kind of has to be someone on the team but ugg if he doesn't drive me crazy. I'm glad at least Sarah stands up to him even if Travis doesn't.

The Screech Owls next stop is Florida. They go to Disney World and Nish...well on the way to Florida Nish decides to buy a pair of X-Ray glasses. But of course, they don't work. Even still, Nish sees something that he wasn't supposed to and now the team must stop a terrorist attack.
