About the author

Frits van Oostrom studeerde in Utrecht Middelnederlandse taal- en letterkunde, en werd op zijn 29e hoogleraar in dat vak te Leiden. Ook was hij onder meer gasthoogleraar aan Harvard University, president van de KNAW en voorzitter van de commissie die de Canon van Nederland ontwierp. Sinds 2002 is hij universiteitshoogleraar te Utrecht.
Van Oostrom ontving talloze prijzen en eerbewijzen, waaronder de AKO Literatuurprijs, de Spinozaprijs en in Vlaanderen de Keizer Karelprijs en de Gouden Penning van de Belgische Akademie van Wetenschappen. Zijn meest recente boek, Nobel streven. Het wonderbaarlijke maar waargebeurde verhaal van ridder Jan van Brederode, werd in 2018 bekroond met de Libris Geschiedenisprijs.
In de late herfst van zijn loopbaan is hij zijn visie op de Reynaert tot een boek gaan vormen, mede als eerbetoon aan een vakgebied dat hem zoveel heeft gebracht. Het boek is bedoeld te verschijnen bij Van Oostroms feestelijke afscheidscollege – na 40 jaar hoogleraarschap – op 12 mei 2023. Het is zijn meest persoonlijke boek geworden, en wat dat betreft de kroon op zijn werk.

This is a compact book which calls itself the “canon” of the Netherlands. Each entry is two pages with 2-3 illustrations and a description of a pivotal moment or innovation in history. It includes website links and places to visit. At the end, the authors explain how to use the book on a classroom. A good little overview before travel. It begins with megalithic tombs and ends with the Eurozone.

A very short but concise review of the Dutch history. It skips many details, but its organization makes it easy to follow and it's full of references for further learning.

It is a good small book, but only as an introductory vision to the History of the Netherlands.

Easy to read, short but clear. The photographs and illustrations are quite interesting too. A nice reading material for a ten-minute-session in the loo.
