Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Edgar Degas (born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas) was a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are considered to be among the finest in the history of art.

Early in his career, his ambition was to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.

Very large coffee table size bio of Degas that covers his entire life with wonderful examples of his stages and interests. Not too deep, not too shallow....

This book showcases Edgar Degas's genius and his mastery of capturing the human body in motion. I'm particularly fond of his paintings of horses and ballet dancers. I admire his composition and color choices. Having seen many of his works in person, I'm grateful, as he is one of my favorite French Impressionists.
