"I'm wondering what makes me finish a fiction book, no matter how long it takes me, when I never felt the compulsion to finish a textbook upon with my comprehension of the knowledge within I would be graded.

Nevertheless, I began reading this book weeks ago. It started slowly, working hard to incorporate the compelling characters of Lavondyss, the popular second book in Robert Holdstock's series, in such a way that it made sense to follow this tale. It worked, but it took a while for me to get into it. The middle of the book grabbed me, and I followed the antagonist Richard Bradley into Ryhope Wood once more. It's the process of discovery that I enjoy, where both the antagonist and myself learn something new about this bubble in time where myths enact those lives we create for them.

The book reached a breakneck speed 3/4 of the way to the end, as both characters and plot race through Ryhope towards their conclusion. And there we, the characters -- hell, everyone -- are yanked out of the woods and waylaid by a twist that takes us into what very well could have been another Mythago Wood story. Here, however, it just adds on time and pages that were a disappointing chore to get through.

Not that the last 1/4 was not well written, imaginative, or equally explorative into Ryhope. As a stand-alone, it would have been great. Here it was an add-on and set me into a reading purgatory that I trudged through to reach the conclusion that we should have reached 100 pages earlier."
