The story of sundials, their underlying principles, and the practical problems of their construction are presented in this introductory book. To acquaint the reader with the principles behind this instrument, the author explains the natural phenomena upon which it is based - the sun's apparant daily motion and the movement of shadows - and the use of angular measurment to measure time. Since every sundial must be corrected for the location in which it is to be used, Dr. Marshall also discusses longitude and latitude corrections, the complete correction of the sundial and the equation of time(the difference between time as kept by our watches and time indicated by the passage of the sun). For the reader's enjoyment and to illustrate these principles, Dr. Marshall has included an original sundial design in cutout form. It will operate properly at all latitudes and longitudes in any part of the world.
