Recently, I began to read a stack of anthologies acquired several years ago. One of them was Side Show 1995’s anthology of contemporary fiction, which turned out to be a terrific collection of stories.
This eclectic mix includes the award winning and honorable mentions for that year’s Side Show competition. Contributors are from different countries and cover a variety of topics, but what they all have in common are strong voices. I enjoyed the collection so much that it was impossible to identify the best story, though I managed to narrow it down to five or six. If pressed, I’d have to say that my favorite was the second-prize winning story and first in the anthology, “Meeting Old Lady Coldwater” by Lee Blackcrow. The story is an exquisitely written piece about a white woman experiencing a major culture clash with her Native American husband when she sees the ghost of his grandmother. The other most memorable story, “Darcy” by Susan Welch wasn’t a prize winner, but the character of Darcy was so conflicted that I just couldn’t forget her.
This and other Side Show anthologies are still available through booksellers on Amazon. Anyone interested in good, contemporary short fiction should definitely give this one a read.
