Make Your Smartphone 007 Smart: NEW 2017 Edition [3/10/2017] Conrad Jaeger

Rate this book
The smartphone in your pocket can easily be turned into a high-tech spy tool and counter-surveillance device to rival anything that Ian Fleming’s Q might have dreamt up.You can communicate secretly, browse the web anonymously, access the Deep Web and hidden networks, view banned content, download privately and continue using Twitter and Facebook if their services are ever blocked locally.Conversely, mobile devices are not secure unless you make them so. If somebody wants to know where you are at this precise moment, your smartphone will tell them – even if it is turned off.The push by the commercial world and more recently by law enforcement and surveillance agencies to monitor all we do has led to a counter-revolution. The Mobile Internet has evolved and so has its counter-surveillance tools.Rather like spies in a James Bond movie, mobile users have an array of digital tools to call upon, both to mask their identity and to provide real confidence that their correspondence, data and contacts are secure. There are smartphone apps that let you see in the dark or measure the height of a building. You can film and record without being rumbled; send emails, PMs and SMS that cannot be intercepted or read. You can even take over and control many public and private security cameras.Conrad Jaeger and Alan Pearce have written numerous books on cyber-security and all are available on Amazon.

Honestly didn't expect much from this book, other than learning a few things I didn't already know. But this book was written as though it were thrown together, like a a first draft of an extended, directionless blog post. Maybe people who are largely ignorant about technology, specifically mobile phones, would find this information useful, but anybody who has at least an intermediate understanding of Apple's App Store, Google Play Store, as well as some blogs that regularly report on the expanding usefulness of mobile devices is probably already aware of the information this book has to offer.

Not what I expected based on the title. Interesting nonetheless.

Might have been more appropriately titled:

“A Short Intro to the Deep Web: hidden networks, anonymous browsing, and spy-level security for your smartphone and other devices” ...

or

“Use Your Smartphone (and other devices) Like a Spy: access hidden networks, surf the dark net, send secret messages, and protect yourself from modern-day digital threats” ...

or something else like it.

Good primer

A good introduction for anyone with zero understanding of digital security. Not very in-depth but a good starting point and good value for the price.

Introduction to the Dark Net

This book recommends applications useful for exploring the Dark Net. It offers warnings to beware of scammers, and lists useful websites. I found this interesting and helpful.

Eye opener!!

It is a very good startup and excellent guide. It gives hints to both personal and professional activities plus the reminder of IoT and Big Data now surrounding us.
