In the sixth Pinx Video Mystery, Noah is thrilled that it's been months and months since he's been involved in a murder... but then, the boys learn that Javier O'Shea (tall, dark and LAPD) has been arrested for theft of evidence. As the bodies pile up, they learn that Javier may, or may not, have run afoul of rogue cops at the notoriously corrupt Rampart Station. But what does all this have to do with a major earthquake, a poorly maintained Nissan Sentra, and a once famous drag queen named Ethel Herman?

Noah is definitely my favorite protagonist among the Thornton books I've read to date, so I was happy when this latest installment in the Pinx series showed up. But while overall I enjoyed it, there were some aspects that frustrated me, and I'm left with both a vague disatisfaction with the plot and a very specific irritation with one particular turn of events.

To start with the vague big picture thing, I'm wondering if it's this book specifically, or if they're all kind of like this and it's just my mood and irritation with the other thing making me more critical this time. It's been two years and I don't remember enough to compare properly. But I feel like while the crime and the setup here were interesting enough, the book didn't really spend enough time on it. Noah's investigation felt kind of perfunctory, and it was more like the baddies advanced the plot on spec than because he was a real threat. Maybe it's just me. My overall impression is like one of those days where you were busy all day, but you get to the end of it and are like... but wtf did I actually do all day?

We get a bit of stuff with the video store, his health, Marc and Louis stuff, kind of basic what's the crew up to kind of content, most of which felt appropriate. The focus on hiring/interviewing potential help for the shop did seem a little overly detailed for its relevance to the story at hand, but it wasn't so out of hand that I'd blame it for pushing out actual investigation.

As for the other thing... [And I reserve the right to be irritated with fictional characters for not behaving any differently than I likely would in their situation.] For the last couple books we've been teased with this stupid secret connection between neighbor/part-time employee Patty Wong, and Leon, the friend group member that Noah doesn't actually seem to like. That gets resolved finally. But before we get that resolution, we get one of those situations where we've got a lot of drama and supposed mystery that could be resolved by an extremely brief and unemotional conversation.

Now I think lack of communication gets dumped on unfairly particularly in a lot of m/m reviews I see. Communication can be very scary. I'm cool with plots hinging on it. But only IF I believe it's a conversation the characters would be reluctant to have. But what we have here is Noah, a guy who can't seem to help pestering murderers and their victim's families, thinking what's up with that but apparently unable to be bothered asking simple questions with no obvious downside to people he doesn't have any particular emotional investment in. I might excuse that in the course of a single book, but this has been teased over multiple books, and maybe I'm just still bitter about shows like X-Files or Nowhere Man that constantly teased viewers with bits of mythology they never paid off, (often tossing out a crumb only to go ha! psych! we lied the next week), but that just really annoyed me. Especially with it getting as much focus as it did and being something so ultimately trivial.

And then

So... yeah. I enjoyed more than I didn't I guess, so net positive rating, but not the most satisifying installment in the series.

This series is so good! I love Noah and his friends, Louis, Marc and Leon, solving mysteries. And Noah’s mom is so funny! Of course Noah is the one who gets the brunt of everything and finds himself in trouble.

One of the things that makes this series so good for me is that it takes place in the 90’s and all the mentions of the current events happening takes me back to that time. I was in my late teens and I miss those times.

The mystery in this book involves Noah’s friend and detective Javier O’Shea. After Javier is arrested for a crime Noah and his friends know he didn’t commit they start to investigate things themselves. Poor Noah, who cannot say no to anyone, is pulled into this and he is the one who does the bulk of the investigation. He still likes Javier and wishes they were able to be together and it’s obvious Javier feels the same but things never worked out. Yet. I’m hopeful that in the next book we’ll see something good happen for Noah in the romance department.

Of course Noah has to run his video store, Pinx Video, and take care of his health while searching for clues. I miss video stores. I loved going to rent a movie, looking at all the boxes and reading the descriptions, seeing what movie was playing on the tv when you were there.

One of the main subjects in this series is AIDS and that is handled beautifully by the author. We see a first hand account of someone living with HIV and what that can entail. No one knows the leaps and bounds medicine will make for HIV patients and for those who didn’t live during these times or were too young to remember, this shows a glimpse into life living with the disease.

Noah is such a strong character who needs to find his backbone and realize he’s worth more than he thinks he is. His loved ones know it and I hope Javier can show him too in the future.

I hope we don’t have to wait as long to get the next book. I’m also hoping that we get a glimpse of another character from one of Thornton’s other series in the future, Nick Nowak. He left Chicago in the 80’s for LA and it was teased that he may make an appearance. I hope that’s true!!!

I love Noah's gentle, much-stronger-than-he-imagines character, his fierce loyalty to his friends and his bizarre little slice of life, circa mid-1990's: "It had been more than nine months since I had stumbled over, randomly come across, woken with up, or in any other way, shape or form interacted with a corpse. And I was loving it."

Marc and Louis are buying a house (for which they are spending the astronomical sum of almost $250K), Leon is being Leon (Noah: "Wait, did you say that you had two guys in one night? Leon: "I always get sentimental after the holidays." I didn't get the connection and thought it best left alone), and Noah's mom is doing a little shopping:
"Your birthday is coming up. I'm going to get you a Glock."
"Mom!"
"What? Would you rather have something classic like a Smith & Wesson?"
"I don't need a gun. I don't like them."
"Yes, I know that. If you wanted a gun, you would have gotten yourself one. You need a gun, though. Which is why I'm getting you one.
Oh, and Javier O'Shea is in trouble, big trouble. There's the matter of missing money, police corruption, possible prison time and while Noah and the gang want to help Javier, he's not interested ... which has never stopped them before from investigating.

5 stars for a great story that keeps everything up in the air until the very end and then neatly solves it, and here's hoping all the best things for Noah (and I really hope that includes Javier at some point down the road ...)

I hate to say it because Thornton is an auto-buy for me, but I found this really dull. In terms of romance, these are more like cozy mysteries but without the cozy. Losing patience with this series.

After that angst the ending should have given at least a little more progress in the relationship.

I love this series of books by author Marshall Thornton, The Pinx Video Series, and was not disappointed with this latest edition, "Help Wanted". Moving between the mundane of owning a video store with employee complexities and inadvertently solving crimes, good natured I-just-want-to-live-my-life, Noah Valentine moves from one exciting murder mystery reveal to another as his friends motivate, convince and perhaps even coerce him to solve things. You'll fall in love (again) with Louis and Marc, his neighbors downstairs who are ever at the ready with a big glass of Chardonnay and a tell us everything demeanor. It takes a team----and humor----to solve a murder mystery but in this particular instance, it will take all of them to exonerate 'talk, dark and LAPD' Javier O'Shea from being wrongly accused of murder. Even his mother! Meanwhile, there is an underlying LBGTQ+ reminder of those times in the 1990's that gives drama to Noah's life.
Can't wait for the seventh installment of this series.

Love Marshall Thornton’s Pinx Video Mystery Series. Noah Valentine reminds me a little of myself during the 1990’s. He’s different enough to keep my attention peaked. So happy to read a brand-new Pinx!!

Thank goodness this book returned to the zany, witty, mad-cap investigative forays found in the earlier books (and definitely much much better than the previous title). Case in point:
“Patty looked like a woman. Ricky looked like a drag queen. And in case you don’t know the difference, it’s two pounds of makeup and three feet of hair.”

I'm wondering if the author would consider 'putting out to pasture' Mr tall, dark and whatever - he's doing nothing for Noah . It's great to continue walking with Noah through his health concerns and his not always successful managing of his business employees. The plot action also became quite stirred up (literally) from one notable January 1994 L.A. event! 3.5 stars.

I find this series easier to get into the more of it I read as I just recognize at this point that it's barely a romance and is really just a mystery series. I like all of these guys and enjoy their banter as the most improbable group of sleuths find themselves on the case, more because they want to than because they really need to be involved. ;) This time around Javier has been arrested and the guys aren't going to let their favorite cop go down for something they're sure he could have nothing to do with.

Noah's not the one running into dead bodies this time around, but he and the guys can't resist a good case. Living in LA it was interesting to read this particular book and realize that it's set during the Northridge quake. While I didn't live here then, it is still a part of the public vernacular. For once the guys don't know who to trust as Javier isn't there to turn to and it's clear that the police are corrupt and their the reason Javier is being set up.

I enjoy this series. I'm always looking for the miniscule steps forward that Noah and Javier take towards each other. Words were actually exchanged this time, interest has been admitted...but things just aren't that easy for these two ever. I'm ready for more.

It’s been so long! Noah is one of my favourite disasters, and he certainly stepped in it this time.

The mystery of ‘Lee’, finally revealed!

And some Javier! We didn’t see nearly enough of him in Cash Out (rather, we didn’t see him at all, just a few phone calls). I do love this sad dance Noah & Javier have going on.

Another entertaining mystery and an opportunity to reconsider past assumptions about some of the side characters. I think Noah’s character has gotten a bit lost in the past few books, though, because he’s been reacting to things and going along with other people’s plans more than he’s been making his own decisions. Some of that seems to be by design due to Noah’s perception of what his health means for his future, but there have also been missed opportunities to directly develop his character, for example by more clearly showing that he’s going with the flow for narrative reasons and not because his characterization is taking a backseat to the rest of the plot.

Similarly, while I don’t mind the constant will-they-won’t-they between Noah and Javier, it’s gotten so little page space in the last few books that it’s losing its impact. Since this whole book is about clearing Javier’s name, I’d have liked to see Noah think about Javier more.

Despite those issues, though, this was fun to read and I’m glad book 7 is coming out soon.

Honestly, the plot of this book made it a 4-star read, but the misogyny that runs throughout it dropped the rating for me.

So happy this book finally came out

I'm always waiting for each book in this series (have been following this since the first one came out). I kind of missed how 92 became 96 so I sort of expected like a 2-3 year jump lol
Now that it's 96 I want some cross over with Nick's life hahah
When it comes to the mystery in this book, I'd say I liked it a little bit less than in the previous ones, it was a bit more difficult to follow along.
And sheesh, these two just can't get a break my god lol (you know what two I'm talking about)
Anyway, I really hope there will be a next book some time soon. I need more Noah and his friends

This whole series has been a hoot. Some nostalgia from being around the age of the characters at the setting of the story. Making many connections to events and perspectives of the characters are experiencing. What the author succeeds is something difficult and often doesn’t work in light mysteries, there is lots of humor but not at the expense of acknowledging difficult situations and sobering news stories. It takes a deft touch. The story is a bit of a stretch but believable and the characters are whimsical but relatable. It was a welcome relief during a stressful week I was experiencing. Thank you

I really like this gang.
There has been several months where Noah hasn't had to interact with a dead body but then the gang are informed that Javier has been arrested and they set out to prove his innocence. Of course, towards the end Noah does stumble on his dead body.
Liked the mystery and although part way through you get a hint of who the bad guys were, it was still good getting there.
The city is even rocked by an earthquake and Noah gets news about his HIV/Aids.

This is labelled book 6 of 6 but with the ending I am certainly hoping that further books will be published in this series.

I thoroughly enjoy these little mysteries. I keep thinking 'this is the last book', Noah and Javier must get together at last! And then Javier sits much of this book in jail LOL and MT releases another book! I'm not complaining ~ I get another fun book set in the early 90s (but feels a bit earlier, which is perhaps me showing my age).

I adore Noah's friends and mother. Their contribution to the book provides relief as well as a bit both sanity and insanity. So much fun.

Narrated by Cooper North - excellent.

Murder mystery and conspiracy, with a hint of MM romance.
Noah and his friends investigate the charges against closeted gay police officer Javier, which puts them and people close to them in danger.
I had no trouble following the plot, but there seemed to be minor inconsistencies. Maybe I missed some dialogue, or maybe some things occurred off the page. Javier's stated reason for his refusal to defend himself and his reluctance to start a relationship with Noah seemed weak to me.
I enjoyed the story and the characters, set in LA in the 1980s.

Tall, dark and oh so very handsome Detective Javier has been arrest. Obviously framed. And Noah is dragged into finding proof of innocence by the gang, again. I’m always amazed how they make the stupidest decisions at times, but it’s what makes them so endearing. Well maybe not Leon, he’s not my favorite of the group. What I love about the these mysteries is out there is always a twist somewhere that I never see coming. And the next book needs to come soon…I want an HEA for Noah and Javier!!

What can I say this series gets better and better.
A good crime story, great friendships and the background of living in the 90s when HIV and AIDS were seen as a death sentence and being homosexual was not a safe way to be in the world. Despite, this there is strong vein of humour which many of us use to live out lives.
I hope there are more books to come so we can see where life takes Javier and Noah.

Help Wanted

When Javier O’Shea is arrested, accused of stealing money from a crime scene, Noah, Marc & Louis and Leon become involved into trying to clear his name. Expect the usual shenanigans, mix-ups and conjectures as previous Pinx Video Mysteries. Throw in an earthquake, corrupt cops, not knowing who to trust and you have a fast paced mystery.

Love love love having Noah and the gang back. Such a long gap between book 5 and 6 so I hope desperately that book 7 comes out soon.

Back on form after the dip in book 5 - oh, how wonderful to have the yearning and Javier-related angst back. Oh, he's so complicated. Everyone is so multi-faceted. Oh, the humour.

Love love love.

Loved

This series is so fun! I love all the characters. I find that most every book makes me laugh, give me an 80s nostalgia, and also makes me sad for what the LGBT community had gone through in the 80s.

This book was so good as Javier has wound up in trouble and in jail. Noah and all his friends try to figure out how to get him out of the charges.

Such fun.

This series is always a delight, even as much of the run time starts to be taken up with the day to day aspects of the MCs life, such as running a video store, and less about the mystery. My main complaint is always going to be the overly slow burn of the romance angle. Still, very fun and nostalgic.

The boys are definitely still getting their noses in where not wanted.
They go riding to the rescue of Javier - not that he wants it. .
Noah once again in the thick of the denouement and danger.
Javier’s jeopardy seemed to fade away and whilst he and Noah do meet up, all is not easy.

Still enjoying this series! Wow about Patty Wong - that was an eye-opener!

There was an underlying sadness in this book for me, maybe because it was Javier that was under arrest? And that ending definitely didn't help either. I am hoping there are more in this series!

Pretty good book. Still a quick read but I did like the direction of this one more so than the last entry. I do wish the books were a bit longer, but I enjoy the throwbacks to the 90's and the way everyone's friendships are. Such great chemistry between them all. I look forward to more books.
