I loved this book, it is among my favourites. Lisa Baraitser is a terrific and nuanced writer, the writing is descriptive while depicting philosophical notions and standpoints. There has been a flourishing of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, on the experience of women as mothers in this early 21st century which is wonderful and enlightening. Baraitser's text, however, goes further than most in tracing through to an understanding of the experience in terms of the sense of self that includes the profound nature of the mother-infant connection. In this sense I recommend readers look up works by Jessica Benjamin, in particular, who describes the intersubjectivity between mothers and their infants.
