I don't know about you, but when I pick up a devotional, I expect it to be filled with sound Biblical truths that can be applied to my life. I suspected that this book would be different from that, and it was.

This book examines the lives of a few hundred women. Some of them come straight from the pages of the Bible. Others we would find in history books. Others are known for the hymns they wrote, and a few are known for their ability to stand firm for their faith. Not all of the women in the book are who we would think of as role models. But we can learn from them. For some, it might be a challenge to see where we can more actively live our lives for God. Some of the women in the book might force us to examine our hearts and see if we share the same negative qualities.

Each passage is thought-provoking. The brief biography of the woman is followed with some reflective questions and suggestions on examining our own lives. On the women from the Bible, the book does include the passages on where to find her or the particular story about her. But every day's reading is followed with a verse from scripture that is relevant to the story told.

If you are looking for a book to help you dig into the Bible, this isn't the book for you. This book is a wonderful study on women through history. Each day is only a page of reading, so it is quite manageable. Nonetheless, it is a fascinating collection of stories of women who have graced the pages of history for better or for worse, and nearly all of them have left something behind for future women to learn from.

Very interesting

I found this book to be very interesting and inspirational. It inspires me by seeing how women have shown their love for God through their actions and lives. Many faced great adversities, but never wavered. How can you not be inspiredby that? It's one I'll definitely reread over and over. If you like to learn about women in history (not like a textbook...it's more like a brief biography or highlight of their lives, that's followed by a question for the reader to think about his/her own life, and finished with a scripture), this book is for you! You can read it as a daily devotional or just for pleasure. I found myself constantly reading ahead because it was so interesting. Note, this isn't JUST about women in the bible, but women throughout history that were known for their love of Christ.

I have enjoyed doing The One Year Women in Christian History Devotional over the past year.
When I first started the devotional I was expecting it to be only women from the Bible. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it included women from the earliest churches to women in the modern era.

This devotional takes less than five minutes each day. Depending on the day, there is a topic or person, scripture verses, a brief page of information, and a scripture verse at the end of the page. There are familiar names, like Mary Magdalene, and unfamiliar (to me) names, like Dorothy Carey. I enjoyed learning about these women of the faith, the hardships they endured, and the impact they have made on history.

I highly recommend this devotional to anyone who wants to learn more about women of the faith.

Beautiful and inspirational look at women's faith and impact in our world throughout history.
Some I knew, many I didn't. I am amazed at these strong, faithful women, who hearing God's call, sometimes worked within the confines of their culture and sometimes pushed against it, sometimes even stepping out in bold way.

I got this book because I have an interest in history and thought it would be interesting. It surpassed my expectations! The last paragraph on most entries applied some aspect of the woman's life to how I was living and urged a response. Great reading. I have now passed it on to my daughter and hope she is similarly blessed. I have given 4 rather than 5 stars because of the American focus.

Not really what i expected. It has a lot of completely unknown (to me) historical figures, and with some of them they are stretching it a bit... Overall pretty good, though. Good life application.

The One Year Women In Christian History Devotional is more than a historical book of Christian women, but more importantly, it’s a daily reminder to draw near to God.

I like how the introduction suggests the authors’ intentions of creating this book are to make readers think, and perhaps inspire them to commit themselves to God in a new way—whether following the examples of these historical women or avoiding their errors.

This rather thick book, with 384 pages, is loaded with remarkable stories of women who’ve been significant in church history (some favorable, some not so favorable) and is organized into 14 meaningful segments:

WOMEN OF THE EARLIEST CHURCH
WOMEN OF THE PERSECUTED CHURCH
WOMEN OF THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED CHURCH
WOMEN OF THE MEDIEVAL CHURCH
WOMEN IN JESUS’ MINISTRY
WOMEN OF THE REFORMATION ERA
WOMEN OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT ERA
WOMEN OF THE MISSIONARY ERA
LESSONS FROM HYMNS PENNED BY WOMEN
WOMEN OF THE MODERN ERA (1900-1970)
WRITER’S CORNER
ASSORTED LESSONS FROM WOMEN THROUGHOUT HISTORY
WOMEN WE’RE THANKFUL FOR
WOMEN OF THE NATIVITY

The devotions are comprised of a full page for each day of the year. Most of them begin with a powerful title, a woman’s name, year of her birth and death, an evocative story, and closes with a Bible passage (quoted from various versions, such as NLT, NIV, KJV, NKJV, and NRSV.) Each story is easy to read and is packed with remarkable facts and incidents that are new to me.

My favorite sections are:
WRITER’S CORNER - I’m familiar with many of these women authors, such as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Louisa May Alcott, and Flannery O’Connor.

LESSONS FROM HYMNS PENNED BY WOMEN - Although I’m familiar with many hymns, such as Just As I Am, When We All Get To Heaven, and Because He Lives, my knowledge of the women who wrote them was limited.

For those seeking inspiration, or knowledge of women in history, this is certainly a keeper.

5 stars – Recommended.
