Alex Smith wrote his first book when he was six. It wasn’t particularly good, but it did have some supernatural monsters in it. His latest books, the DCI Robert Kett thrillers, have monsters in them too, although these monsters are very human, and all the more terrifying for it. In between these two books he has published twelve other novels for children and teenagers under his full name, Alexander Gordon Smith—including the number one bestselling series Escape From Furnace, which is loved by millions of readers worldwide and which is soon to become a motion picture. He lives in Norwich with his wife and three young daughters.

Another brilliant book in the DCI Kett series.
I’m hoping there’s not too long to wait for the next one as I really enjoy these books.
Kett and the team are called when a bomb has exploded at an office in the city and there’s the risk of another explosion.
With the fire brigade and bomb team there Kett speaks to two of the survivors and it seems the bomb was delivered that morning.
There were six packages delivered and some were filled with stones but one was a bomb.
The seventh package was sent to someone who no longer worked there and contained stones.
Kett is confused why this has happened but is soon called out again as someone else had died.
There seems to be something being organised around lucky numbers and if you’re the unlucky one - you die.
This is a gripping crime thriller with some great humour as always.
I can’t wait for the next one.

As always I look forward to new offerings from the pen of Alex Smith, It has been so since reading his YA Furnace Series over a decade ago. I picked up this title on release day but it was also a toss-up as his sister under the pen name K.T. Galloway released book 7 in her O’Malley & Switch series, One Last Breath just days earlier. It was literally a coin toss to see which of the sibling’s volumes would get read first. This one won! It is another excellent volume in a great series. I could hardly put it down.

The description of this volume is:

“Sometimes You Win. Sometimes You Die.

When seven packages are delivered to the staff of an insurance company in Norwich, the unthinkable happens: one of the packages explodes.

Six people survive, the seventh does not.

As the fire rages and the city reels, DCI Kett and the Extreme Crime Task Force are brought in to try to figure out why anybody would murder an innocent woman in such a violent manner.

Lucky Number Seven is the thirteenth book in the million-selling DCI Robert Kett series. Relentless action, compulsive mystery and dark humour abound in the series that Thrilling Fiction calls "Heart-stoppingly gripping!" from the author that James Patterson describes as "fresh and ferocious!"”

It all starts with a boom. A very big boom, that is the result of a bomb. Kett and the team are chasing theories, but overtime they think they have it narrowed down it seems to be a red herring. And the pace of the incidents is building. Whoever the man in the mask is her has a plan, and has been working on it a long time. He is playing a game of chance with 7 people and 1 is going to be unlucky. The man is the mask is playing the game and forcing people to pick, to draw lots, or straws as it were. One leads to death. The other 6 end up with radically changed lives.

At first there seems to be no relation between the victims, from round to round. But Something is niggling the back of Kett’s brain. Can Kett and the team figure out the pieces. And trace this back to the source? The team seems to be racking all over the region. With Armed response either following or arriving first. But they keep falling 1 step behind the man in the mask.

If you have read the other DCI Kett books this one is a must read. If you happen to be a fan of rough and tough action you will almost certainly enjoy this novel. And the other books in the series. This is the fourteenth of the DCI Kett stories that I have read, the fifteenth novel, Kett has also made a brief appearance in The Harder They Fall, the first of the Softley Series of books.

About the author we are informed that:

“Alex Smith wrote his first book when he was six. It wasn’t particularly good, but it did have some supernatural monsters in it. His latest books, the DCI Robert Kett thrillers, have monsters in it too, although these monsters are very human, and all the more terrifying for it. He lives in Norwich with his wife and three young daughters.”

My original introduction to Smith’s works were The Furnace novels many years ago. I have not read everything he has published but much of it. They are almost always edge of your seat thrillers. I still hope that someday he will finally release book 2 is the Softley Softley Series, but until then I am thankful for another read in this dark and gritty series. For some the Kett stories will be the things of nightmares, for others a look at the underside of society. But no matter how you read them they are crime thrillers with a lot of action, great characters and often a significant violence! This one has several new twists and a few surprises for Kett, the team and for us the readers!

Powerful Ending!

It took a long time for me to get into this book-- a bit too much plot and not enough character development. Plus I missed Kett's home life and the girls. However, towards the end the speed and excitement picked up and smack bang the conclusion was something else. Scary, cliff hanging and some supreme sacrifices. And then the girls and Twinkle with a return of their favorite saying, "f...ty b..t cheese." Yay! I am sorry the author is going through medical challenges and would like to thank him for churning out this series in spite of that and the chaos of young children plus puppy. 😍

I love the DCI Kett series, they’re such easy reads and more than anything I love the characters and all of their idiosyncrasies. I read the first one in lockdown and loved it, I then read up to book 12and had a break as I was up to date with them but in that break he’s written 4 more and I plan on reading them all, I always feel sad when I’ve finished them.
Although they are based around murder and some of them are fairly dark I find them comforting because of the way Alex smith writes and how you just can’t help but fall in love with all of the characters.
If you enjoy the JD Kirk DCI Logan series you’ll love these too.

Lucky Number Seven by Alex Smith is book 13 in the DCI Kett series. Seven packages are delivered to an insurance company with number seven containing a bomb and this is quickly followed by further killings with groups of seven targetted to play a game of chance as to which of them dies. Another superb thriller with the Extreme Crime Task Force taking on the case and race to stop the killings. I love that Clare tries to look after and support his team in his own way. This series just gets better and better. Miss the audio though and will probably wait until they are available for the next one.

Some of the characters in this were so slimy! For other books in the series, they seem to come together much earlier in the book, so it felt a bit touch and go for this one! I really enjoyed it though. The ending was so nerve racking! I really feared for Clare - and he's not usually that close to the action. Had me on the edge of my seat right until the end!

I adore this series and I'm so sad I'm caught up! A bomb goes off at an insurance co. killing one person and the game is afoot! Lucky number 1-7 was written on 7 boxes that had been delivered to the co and randomly handed out to the employees... so who was the target? The dead woman? Was it random? The crew is all here with Clare being as hilarious as always. The dedication of the team is tested and I just love every one of them. My only question was why spend so much time on the pooh left in front of the building? Oh well ... another fun read from one of my fav authors!

As always, the DCI Kett novels are superb. It never fails to grab me right from the start and hold my attention. The characters are great - my only issue with this one was the endless focus on Porter’s weight. It wasn’t really funny, it was just bullying and fatphobic, an unnecessary addition to the story.

DCI Kett is the best

Well, technically it should be Robbie and his team are the best because I know that if ever I needed help from a serious crime team, theirs is the one I would want. From the very first few pages where poor Gloria is dealing with a forearm sized "deposit" on the office access ramp, the story builds momentum and just when Robbie and his team think they are close, something big happens.
In particular within this book, I have loved the relationship between Clare and Porter, with Clare showing just how much his officers mean to him.
The serious storyline is as always spot on with very few clues as to who is behind the crimes until close to the end, which is interspersed with real comedic descriptions which are so beautifully woven in by Alex.
To reach book no13 in a series and keep hitting the spot to keep millions of happy readers in a world where getting lost in a book is nowhere near as popular as it was 20 or so years ago, takes real writing talent - something Alex Smith has in abundance.
Other writers churn out 8 or more books each year but many of these lose the little details in the plot and/or characters.
But DCI Kett is such a great character, his team offer everything and I will personally read every future book as I have every one to date.

Somedays you just get lucky…

I don’t believe I’ve ever found another author that is as nice as this one

& now yes, he could be catfishing ALL of us readers…

He may be leading us all down a dark & mysterious pathway where danger could await at any given moment.

Should we trust anyone who he portrays within his written pages? Or should we take steps to protect ourselves from near certain betrayals & death! (A taser would be awesome!)

Well, all I know is that as long as we stick with our favorite crime beating family, as wacky & as wonderful as they all are, we DO know one thing, it’s gonna be a bloody sheetload of tossing FUN, either way & if danger does appear, we know they have our backs! (& a taser!)

If you’ve never read this author, start with book one, & make sure you always have the next book on standby because once you start reading, your not going to want to stop!

"Lucky Number Seven" is the thirteenth edition in Alex Smith's DCI Robert Kett series, and it delivers another thrilling and fast-paced crime thriller. The story begins with a stunning explosion at a Norwich insurance firm, when seven items are delivered, one of which explodes and kills someone. DCI Kett and his Extreme Crime Task Force are tasked with solving the mysteries surrounding this terrible conduct. As the inquiry progresses, it becomes clear that the offender is playing a fatal game of chance, selecting people seemingly at random. The team's pursuit of this vicious criminal is filled with nonstop action, complicated twists, and dark humour that keep readers interested until the finish. Smith's portrayal of Kett's personal challenges, particularly his devotion to his family in the face of upheaval, adds depth to the character and enriches the tale. Fans of gritty British crime fiction will find "Lucky Number Seven" an intriguing addition to the series.

It was so good to get back to this series, it's one of my favourites.

Lucky Number Seven didn't disappoint. Though I felt that the beginning was a bit slow, the rest of the book fell into place like every other Alex Smith page turner. Action, complexity, and the everyday joy of life filling all the pages.

I do love the complexity of these books. They are more than just dark thrillers. They're full of warmth and compassion and connection. They don't just tell a story - Smith weaves genuine human interaction with his words, and you feel like you know these characters so well.

I always feel at home with Kett, Savage, Porter, Duke, and Clare, even when they're experiencing some of the most vile acts I have ever heard of.

Lucky Number Seven -

Alex does it again. Another fantastic story in this great series. As always, I often say will the next Kett book be as good as the others and each time Alex manages to deliver. This one has so many twists and turns that you’ll almost get dizzy trying to work out who the
killer is and does tragedy strike towards the end of the book. As normal there is some great humour in the story, with some laugh out loud moments. You just have to love the characters. My recommendation is - start at book 1 and read them all. 5 out of 5 again and highly recommended. Thank you Alex.

Unlucky Deaths

This is another great book by Alex Smith and his Crime book with DCI Kett leading the team of Extreme Crime Investigation. The murder clues are confusing and mean nothing until an event 7 years ago brings everything together. The author presents bombings, electrocution, gas, shotgun, and poison to the pages of this book. The series can be read out of order and each book is a stand-alone but I recommend reading the series from the start as the thrillers WILK not disappoint. Enjoy!

SUPERB!!!

Awe Lucky Number Seven was such a fabulous read that I tried to read slower because I did not want it to end. I am a huge fan of this series and despite Alex having his health struggles he still produces such wonderful first class stories that are so enjoyable and entertaining. I have a permanent smile on my face throughout. His girls are adorable and they are an important factor in engaging us readers. Alex wishing you well, please keep your loyal readers content with many more stories to look forward to. Barbara Sheffield x.

Lucky #13

I love the DCI Kett books. This was an especially touching book because, as a parent, you do feel that you would do anything for your children. However, murder is not something that most of us would contemplate. These books have such wonderful characters and amazing storylines. I hope that horses will continue to feature in the books as a means to help Alice find her way. There is something special about the rich odor of horses that soothes the soul. I would recommend this series for anyone who loves a great British mystery.

Another great Kett read

I always like the Kett books. This one is no different. Starting off with a bomb this was definitely an explosive story. Alex is such a descriptive writer that we be one as one with the characters. I love how in amongst all the mayhem, we are still able to laugh at the antics of all those on the team. We laugh at Clare and the words he comes out with, then we are thundering along the roads in an IRV at great speeds. Its really thrilling. I would urge anyone who enjoys a good Crime Thriller to read thes books, from the start and they just get better.

If you know me - you know I love Police/Crime books and you'll also know I have come across many teams I would love to work with BUT DCI Ketts team is my all time favorite! I love every one of those hairy tosspockets and I enjoy their stories!

The Background of " Lucky Number Sven " was great, even the villain ( he WAS quite understandable ) it was such a carefully created story and it kept me on Edge!

Loooooved that there were again some Youtube clips LOL

Can't wait for the next adventure <3

Lucky Number Thirteen

I have read all the DCI Kett books and, even though they are often terrifying in parts, I love them.
Alex manages to introduce so much humour into such serious and frightening situations that I regularly find myself crying with laughter. And I love all the very human characters he has created!
I would recommend these books to anyone who enjoys somewhat oddball scenarios and the warmth of real family life.

Lucky Number Seven is book 13 in the DCI Kett crime thriller series and it is once again an excellent read.
This time a killer is capable of planting a bomb in an insurance office, staging a hanging scene, and using cars as a killing machine. Where all the victims stand a one in seven chance of dying.
A very clever story and all the usual police characters are excellent, as the reader has come to expect.
Highly recommended

A fabulous addition to the DCI Kett series. Hich octane, complex and gritty, this is a fast paced thriller mystery that kept me guessing right till the end.
The dynamics between this motley team are brilliantly written. The characters are well drawn and the humour that pervades the book alleviates some of the dark issues explored. Pure indulgence for me. There's nothing beats a cup of tea and a few Kettisms.

Another seat of your pants ride!

One of the best Kett books yet. The characters reveal a little more about their personal, none police sides, and take us through an exhilarating adventure that I (as a mere reader) did not figure out before the big reveal - which in itself was cleverly written and made me ask a question of myself ..... No spoilers though - just put it onto your read list! Cannot wait until the next installment!

Alex Smith has created here a tight group of supportive characters who support one another in their jobs and personal lives. Full of love for family and one another, they fight evil, protect the innocent. Their’s is a gruesome job. They stand between the public and horrors so frightening, readers take warning. I like books that show heroism in personal, public, and or professional lives.

One of his best DCI Kett books

I liked this book a lot because there was quite a bit of character development with Colin. We finally learned a little about his past struggles and got a glimpse of his softer side. I love that he insisted Alice have a horse and managed to work that out for the family.
