2024 Update I listened to the story this time and it makes such a difference hearing not only the nuances of the character distinctions but also the skilled storytelling. My original rounded rating still stands but I’d change it to 4.5 stars because Sam’s security situation felt even more ridiculous.
2015 Review Nick's now Vice President and life as he and Sam once knew it is significantly changed. While he and Scotty have a security detail, Sam is allowed to work without one. Meanwhile, the DC Metropolitan Police, already under fire for how the last high profile case was handled is now battling a new scandal involving Gonzo and his custody issues.
The department is under siege for most of the story with the investigations running non stop, at break-neck speeds. While there were some surprising twists, I was able to deduce most of the mystery before it was revealed. The climax couldn't have been more exciting but the situation involving Sam's security, or lack thereof, pushed my limits of plausibility. I'm hoping the next story fixes what I think is beyond the pale. Otherwise, this was an extremely exciting and interesting story, including major developments involving some of the secondary characters.
Not sure when I started this series. But I have enjoyed all the books. Loved catching up with Sam and Nick and the rest of their colleagues, friends, family.
SAM
I couldn't remember what colour Sam's hair was and had to message Marie who was kind enough to reply. No, this picture is not exactly as described in the book but it's the best I could find.
NICK
This probably isn't how he is described in the book either but he is cute.
Nick isn't the typical Hero that I go for. He is so nice. I love his devotion to Sam and to Scotty and Sam's family.
Love that Sam is still doing her job and being independent. OK, might be outside the realms of possibility that the wife of the VP could be out and about without a security team. But, it's fiction so anything goes.
Love Skip. Hope he gets closure. And of course, Scotty. Sweet boy.
This is Book 8. Looking forward to the next one.
I also love that Sam is a tomboy and loves her jeans and boots ... yeah, she does dress up now and again, she loves her shoes.
Scandals are rocking the D.C. Police Department. Chief Farnsworth is facing heat for his decisions during their last big case which led to a kidnapping and shoot out. Meanwhile, Detective Gonzales' custody fight for his son has gone public. Things go from bad to worse when the baby's mother is found murdered and evidence is pointing toward Gonzo. Lt. Sam Holland must work to help both Farnsworth and Gonzo clear their names.
On the home front, Sam's husband Nick is ready to start his new job as Vice President of the United States. They are also working on adopting thirteen-year-old Scotty, but that may have hit a snag.
This is the 8th book in the series and it's still going strong. The investigation was fast paced and never let up. Most of the supporting characters were in this book. Many relationships advanced in this story. There was so much going on, I fear that the author will run out of storylines. On the other hand, I do not like that Nick is now the VP. It's just so far out in left field, I have a hard time wrapping my brain around it. That, and the fact that Sam doesn't have to have a security detail, makes me adjust my rating of what could have been a 5-Star book. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
Shocking but true - this is the 8th installment in Marie Force's popular "Fatal Series." Before you ask - YES, Fatal Scandal is every bit as good, if not better, than Books 1-7. I can never get enough of Sam and Nick and, of course, the entire cast of characters that readers have met and grown to love like dear friends throughout the series.
Always fun-to-read with the pages filled with crime, excitement, family and friendship. And, of course there's always lots of sizzling romance and love when Nick and Sam get together.
Fatal Scandal by Marie Force is a 2015 Carina Press publication.
Yay! I finally got a copy of this book from my Overdrive account, and the timing couldn’t have been better.
This is book eight in this mega popular series, and shame on me, I read book nine ahead of this one, but was completely lost. Now, I see why and how everything played out and it makes much more sense.
This was one wild and crazy installment, with Nick trying to move into the White House, Gonzo suspected of murder, Elin gets beat up, and a very uncomfortable revelation concerning Avery’s long running obsession with Sam, causes embarrassment and hurt, and that’s just for starters.
I don’t know what to say, really. Unfortunately, I already had an idea what was going to happen, but I was still unprepared for how it all played out. There is so much personal angst that mingled in with the breakneck action and suspense that my emotions were pulled in all directions.
Avery.. Awkward! I felt SO bad for Shelby and I hope Avery stays on the right path here and everyone else stays on script. I’m not sure, but I picked up on some really weird vibes in this thread and am not convinced everything is going to turn out like I want it to, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Do the right thing Avery!
Nick and Sam… because I have not read every single book in the series, I was taken aback by some of the bedroom scenes. I did not know Sam and Nick experimented this way. The VP is a little kinky! Really? How long has this been going on? This is not my thing, as everyone knows, and I have to complain just a little, as I have noticed ’50 Shades’ tropes showing up everywhere, even in my mystery novels, and I really wish this trend would die down a little, because not all of us are into that stuff. (I’m beginning to think I’m in the minority here though- Are there any traditional romance lovers left?) This series didn’t start off that way. Just sayin’. But, I can always skim over those parts and focus on the other areas of the story, but wish I didn’t have to.
Scotty… things were a little rocky here and I started to get really worried on this front. But, all’s well that ends well, thank goodness, and this is a long overdue cause for celebration.
The suspense… Okay, this is the good stuff. I can’t say too much, but someone is framing Gonzo. But, who has such a strong vendetta? This is personal and shocking, and kept me enthralled as events take a sharp turn that will cause a fall out of epic proportions and could be a game changer.
Although I still want to go back and read all the books I have missed out on, I feel like I am up to speed enough now to read book ten, and give it an informed review. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. 4 stars
A really great read - lots of angst, lots of action, and lots of bad guys. I can see where the next story may pick up too and will have a hard time waiting for the next Fatal book. Sam gets in quite a bind, Gonzo has an extreme issue going on, and Freddie even has his demons to take care of!
Ms Force's writing is just getting better and better with each Fatal book - love Sam and Nick and all the other characters.
Really looking forward to reading her novella this June, even though I really do not like novella's - they are just too much of a tease!
From the blurb: As a new year dawns in the capital city, dual scandals rock the Metropolitan Police Department—and Lieutenant Sam Holland is right in the middle of them. Chief Farnsworth is catching heat for the way he handled a recent homicide investigation, and Detective Gonzales is accused of failing to disclose an earlier connection to the judge who decided his custody hearing.
When Gonzo's fight for his child turns deadly and he has a shaky alibi, Sam must defend two of her closest colleagues. All while her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, settles into his new office at the White House.
Nick begins to wonder if the president is using him for a political boost, and his worries mount over a complication in the plans to adopt Scotty at a time when Sam is being put through the wringer by the always-rabid DC press corps. As the evidence against Gonzo piles up, Sam suspects someone is gunning for her—and her team.
Excellent read:) There was a good balance of elements in this installment. I also felt that the flow was better than some of the previous books. I adore Nick and his priorities. I'm not a big fan of him being the VP, but he handles it well. The ending was exceptional! I lost sleep, because I couldn't stop reading until it was done. Looking forward to the next:) I like the way Force ends with us waiting for a shoe-to-drop...yet it's not a major cliffie and something we can live with until the next book.
Like the plot of this book couldn't be seen books ago. Nick is now Vice President and Sam continues to work as a homicide detective. That happens a lot, right? The President is using Nick? That never happens. Since when does the defendant have to disclose a previous relationship with a judge? I think it is the judge's responsibility to recuse themselves. Gonzo's baby mama turns up dead and he's a suspect? What a shock. This series continues to stretch the bounds of creditability. I expect at least some ties to reality in the books I read.
Yet, Marie Force can weave quite a suspenseful plot even given that the baddie wasn't very hard to see.
♥♥♥♥♥ The best book of the series. Marie had closed a lot of threads, so I wonder what else comes up. It appears from her note that next year we can expect book 10 :D
When reading books and giving them a Five Star rating, I want a great story. I want to be surprised, engaged, and entertained. And in a weird way, I want to be disappointed that the book has ended and I still want more. I want to still think of the story for days after. Five Stars means I’m going to keep this book and reread it (many times). Fatal Scandal is more than a Five Star rating to me. Fatal Scandal deals with multiple scandals affecting the MPD and those close to Lieutenant Sam Holland. She has a lot on her plate to quickly clear those involved while adjusting to changes that come with her husband’s new job. Her husband Nick begins his new job as the Vice President of the US and has his own worries and issues to deal with. As usual, Nick is more than capable of juggling everything and keeping Sam calm, assured, and his number one priority. This book kept me in suspense and had me laughing, crying, gasping, and smiling. The ending is perfect. The Fatal series is a romantic-suspense series based in Washington, DC with recurring characters. The main characters are HOT, SEXY, and STEAMY. Fatal Scandal is my favorite in the series (yes, I’ve said that before but it’s true). I love how Marie keeps us updated with all the characters without taking away from the main characters or current story. The “background” characters and their stories are woven into the story so seamlessly. You can read this book as a stand-alone, but I feel you most benefit from starting from book 1 – Fatal Affair. I’ve read the entire series at least 5 times-it’s that good!
I have been a fan of the Fatal series, and of Marie Force for several years now. That said I had been considering not reading anymore of these because, frankly, trying to remember the multitude of storylines and issues that carry from book to book and never resolve over months, and sometimes years, is just becoming more work than fun. I have admitted in past reviews that I read the first 5.5 books in a flurry which I think helped tremendously. HOWEVER, despite that, this installment blew some life into the series and I am glad I made myself pick it up. The fatal series follows one couple - a D.C Police Lieutenant and her politically affluent husband. It is very reminiscent of J.D. Robb's In Death series, however in Fatal, many of the supporting characters have a more prominent role and story line of their own. Thus making it very complicated when reading only 1 or 2 stories a year.
On a happy note, I think I finally found a good visual for my Nick. Justice Joslin is just about perfect, albeit perhaps a touch young. Dress him up and he's good to go!
So in light of it all, I'm making myself a spoiler section, so read no further!
* Custody for Gonzo and it seems Scotty has been resolved * Skip is in bad shape * Lindsey and Terry got Engaged * VP job is maybe a no-go * Shelby is preggo and Avery might still be in the dog house * Stahl is finally a done story line * However, now we have Ramsey * Rape case was delayed * No big check in with Freddy - wasn't there an issue with parents?
As usual I loved this installment in the series! :) I'm really addicted to Fatal seris! LOL
This is one of those series that are simply awesome. The books never become repetitive, even if we keep meeting the same people.
It is an ongoing series where each book covers a short span of time, but during that time a lot of things are happening and there's never even a moment of boredome.
Here the story cover two days and it's packed with heat (ohhhh Sam and Nick are so hot together! *wink*), action, angst, danger, loony villains!!! It's a continuos roller-coaser! WOW
The only thing I'm sad about is that I will have to wait a year to read the next one!
I love this series! You'd think 8 books about the same couple would get boring, but no way, because Marie Force is a genius! I love reading about Sam and Nick's life together. I love how the story has been developing for so long, and how we know all the other characters so well by now. I can almost see the story happening like a movie playing in my head because I'm so familiar with the characters and settings. I can't wait for more from this series. Sam Is one of the best female characters ever....she kicks major butt!
This is the 8th installment in this awesome series. The books never become repetitive, even if we keep reading about the same characters. Sam and Nick and all the people in their lives as well as the bad guys make for a great read!
wow, I love Sam. And her family. And Nick. And Scotty. I even love Avery. But mostly I love Sam, she's a wonderful female character, strong and full of love.
This new case is really hard and I loved how she were ready to sacrifice herself, OMG I was really worried!
Rip, runnin’, zipping around fast and fun. When this started reading this series I said it felt like an ensemble piece in the making. Well I feel as though overall it really is coming more of an ensemble read and I enjoyed it. A lot.
Detective Lieutenant Sam Holland finds herself investigating one of her own when the mother of Detective Tommy Gonzales' son is found dead and he becomes the prime suspect due to their ongoing custody battle. To make matters worse, Chief Farnsworth is taking heat for mishandling a recent homicide investigation. As the scandals snowball, Sam realizes that the Metropolitan police department is being deliberately targeted.
Series note:Due to ongoing storylines and character arcs, this series must be read in order.
Unfortunately, the implausible situations, unprofessional behavior and procedural inaccuracies that have plagued the past few books continue in this one.
First, the case against Gonzo is such an obvious set-up, and it boggles the mind that anyone would believe it for even a nanosecond... and yet some people do. Moreover, considering Sam's previous altercations with , she should have realized his involvement. Of course, it has already been established that Sam's detecting skills are not exactly top-notch, so it shouldn't be surprising that she missed it.
Second, the personal relationships in this series are an absolute soap opera. While some are engaging like Gonzo and Christina, Terry and Lindsay, and even Nick and Sam (although she still rubs me the wrong way), others including Freddy and Elin, and especially Avery and Shelby are meh. It is virtually impossible to believe Avery has so quickly transferred his feelings for Sam to Shelby. It is almost as ridiculous as Nick's rapid elevation to Vice-President.
Speaking of which, Sam's refusal to accept Secret Service protection is not only implausible but stupid. As both a detective and Second Lady, she is a prime target for anyone with a grudge and her actions are nothing short of TSTL!
So why am I still reading this series .... well, I'm enjoying the ongoing buddy read and discussions. Also, the cases are interesting enough to keep me turning the pages and most of the characters are appealing enough to continue.
OMG OMG OMG what a fantastic read! I have been a fan of this series from the beginning and when I say Marie Force had me at the first page of the first book..that is an understatement..I was hooked and have read each and every book as soon as they come out! Each one is better than the last...not to mention they leave you wanting more! This book starts where the last one left off.. Nick is now the Vice President of the United States..and as the title of the book tells us there is a scandal that surrounds the MPD...I will tell you that it is not just one scandal they will have to deal with..Sam has her work cut out for her! This book has laughter, tears, gasps and some oh no scenes along with some very sexy hot Nick and Sam in the loft scenes..We have some scary moments but most of all we have an omg reveal that I did not see coming. We see Freddy, Elin, Gonzo, Christina, Scotty, Avery Hill, Shelby and of course Sam's dad Skip. I will not spoil this for anyone who hasn't read it but for those of you who are looking for a new series that has mystery and romance this is it but to be fair you will need to read the series from the beginning to truly appreciate it. The characters are recurring as well as their backgrounds although Marie does an amazing job of keeping you updated on the status of each character in each in every book. If I had to pick a favorite of this series I think this one just might be it! Thank you again Marie Force for this amazing story and I look forward to the next book in this series..I know that they take time to write but I wish it was coming out tomorrow!
I rarely read a book straight through, start to finish, in one sitting. But, that is exactly what just happened while reading Fatal Scandal. From the beginning of this book, I had a ball of dread in my gut. Scandals coming at everyone in Sam's department, one right after the other. Nick's new job as Vice President, which was a trip to read. Skip's surgery and the after effects from that. Shelby's special project and relationship with Avery. I honestly don't know how Marie Force does it. This series is becoming a favorite with every new book, and I don't read a lot of suspense. In any form, romance or otherwise. There is just something about Sam and Nick, as well as every supporting character Marie has created. They make me laugh, cry, cringe with fear and anxiety, and swoon. I am a romantic, so what I love most about this series is the love between Sam and Nick. It is palpable. It is thick with desire and passion, yet also sweet and romantic. It seems like they've been together for more than a year, with everything that's happened to them. Their new role as parents to Scotty is possibly the most adorable thing ever. I love this kid. He adds so much heart to every scene he's in. I enjoy every moment with this family, and as always, I am already impatient for more.
Damn. I love this woman. Marie Force is a genius. I hate politics. But somehow Marie manages to make me want to jump head first into the political world. This book was amazing. The relationship that Nick and Sam have is awe-inspiring. They are passion. They are fierce. They love so deeply that you can't help but WANT exactly what they have. And Scotty? How can you not fall in love with that little boy?!
I hope Stahl is done. Gone. I've heard enough of him and hope that he isn't included in any further story lines. In fact, I was hoping he wasn't behind this one because he has overstayed his welcome in the Fatal series.
The drama that surrounds Sam and her team, Skip and his medical troubles, and Nick and his career is such a page-turner. I HAVE to know what happens next! Bring on the next Fatal novel!!
4.5 stars I was torn- I wanted to read it and finish it and I didn't. I'm not a huge fan of Nick being VP. Just going to say that out loud and now he is locked into it for how ever long this term lasts. As always, I loved Nick and Sam together and how Ms. Force brings them along slowly in each book, adding layers to their sweet and very sexy marriage. I adore Scotty and his role in their sweet family.
My only gripe (?) was the whole Avery/Shelby relationship and how it was handled. I wasn't aware of the depth of their relationship and I wish the reader had been in on that development like we were with Gonzo/Christine and Freddie/Elin. I really wanted the details and the progress of Avery and Shelby's relationship. I hope we get more in the upcoming books.
Re-listened in Nov 2020. Nick's White House issues are definitely a lot tamer than what's happening IRL!

Another good installment to the series. I liked that this series is set in the present whereas In Death is set in the future. Gives me the best of both worlds. Although to my way of thinking, I still find Eve a lot more kick-ass than Sam, Sam can be just a bit too girly sometimes. But Nick and Roarke, that's a tough one!
Best ever! Absolutely loved it, definitely 5 stars. Fast paced, lots of action, serious nail biter moments, surprises…just a WOW! I was bummed because I thought this was the last bk in the series. Oh but noooo…MF just committed to write bks 9 and 10. YIPEE!!! If you love this series, you’ll love this bk. Can’t wait for it to be released on audio.
This series just gets better and better, and its fair to say Fatal Scandal is a genuine page turner. That's not only hard to put down, but full of suspense and edge of your seat moments, and quite frankly, I can never get enough, even though I've read this story multiple times.
Narration and Story 4, Sam and Nick are great together... that couldn't be better. But this story was missing something, yes there was a major fear factor but it could have been better. I prefer when Nick is more involved in the Crime. Call me spoiled.
As always Marie Force keeps you glued to the pages of her books. The continuing Story of Sam and Nick and the rest of the Fatal gang leaves you wanting more and hoping it never ends. An amazing story and a must read by all.
I can't get enough of Nick and Sam. I love them so much, they are the best couple in romantic suspense/mystery. I loved the overall plot and I am again anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.
