Discusses animal rights and the morality of animal experiments, suggests ethical guidelines for the use of animals as test subjects, and identifies irrational attitudes towards animals
“Polarization of opinion over the use of animals in research can only lead to an adversarial confrontation on important issues and a fruitless round of hostilities in which all concerned - including the animals themselves - stand to lose. This outcome can be avoided however if the great majority in the middle inform themselves and bring their considerable influence to bear on legislators and decision makers concerned with the practical resolution of the problems of animal welfare” p.93.
Informing the middle is exactly what this book sets out to do. I wish it were more widely read. It’s language and depth are unchallenging -good for the casual reader - and it’s referenced - allowing for easy access to more information in places of interest. The contents and index are useful with the consequence that this is a text that can be dipped into or surfed. It’s the sort of thing I’d like to flick back through (but I know I won’t because its lacking a nookbook version.) It was written a long time ago but the core issues and sentiency of the text remain unchallenged.
