The start of summer in Glenville is seemingly idyllic. Until a family reunion at Dr. Fleming’s Lake house, turns into a day of mass casualties…
Glenville is an interesting town full of oddballs and quirky inhabitants. One of them being Christopher Fleming, a world-renowned plastic surgeon. In the midst of celebrating his 50th birthday, multiple gunmen crash the party. Kidnapping the doctor and leaving a trail of bodies behind them. As local police and the town's detective Heather Bishop arrive at the scene, they bear witness to the horrific aftermath of the crime.
Upon the realization that the case might be more than she could handle, Heather teams up with Jason Fleming, Christopher's son. A U.S. intelligence officer with a wide array of experience under his belt. Together as they attempt to make sense of the seemingly unexplainable, they stumble upon an international conspiracy and the many faces of evil.
Masked gunmen, kidnappings, mass killings, and a touch of international intrigue. The House on the Lake may be serene, but the truth behind this case is not for the faint of heart.
Cara Kent lives in a cozy apartment in San Antonio, Texas with her feisty black cat.
She has spent most of her life dreaming of publishing her own novel. After the pandemic changed the course of her life, she found time and motivation to finish up her novels and have them published.
When not reading a thriller or romantic suspense novel in her apartment, you can find Cara Kent at a local coffee shop or volunteering at the local animal shelter.
This series keeps getting better and better with each new book, and for me this book is so far the best of all. Not only because the story really grabbed me since the beginning but because our main character, Heather Bishop has grown so much and is much more focused in herself and healing that it makes her a more interesting character to read. In this case we found her in the middle of an investigation of a kidnapping that went wrong since the beginning, and she is now working with the CIA trying to crack the case and rescue Dr. Christopher Fleming alive. The plot of this book moves so quickly and is so well crafted that you find yourself glued to the pages of the book along with Heather. Cara Kent has becoming one of my favorites writers to read, and Heather and Gabriel ones of my favorites detectives. I hope that the other new characters introduced on this book, Jason, Jessica, Bonnie and Takahiro, continue showing up in upcoming books.
Dr Christopher Fleming's 50th birthday was supposed to be a day of fun and celebration. Instead, he is kidnapped, and some of the guests are injured and a few killed. How did the gunmen get in the locked gates? Detective Heather Bishop gets the call. Dr Fleming's son, Jason works for the CIA and wants to find these people himself, but Heather isn't going to let that happen. Soon this case is more than either one of them bargained for. Not only is Fleming's family in danger, so it everyone working the case. Now Heather is going undercover for the CIA. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
The Heather Bishop story gets better with each book! Once started this book is one that won't allow you to put it down until you have read the last page. The characters in The House on the Lake will stay with you after you have finished. Gabriel and Heather are two of my favorite people. Quick thinking, and gut instinct pay off for Heather. The new characters that are part of this new mystery are exactly what you expect for the situation. I hope Heather has more adventures with Jason, Jessica, Bonnie and Takahiro. Gunman, bombings and family perfect ingredients for escape.
Cara Kent continues to be one of my new favorite authors, and proves that she deserves that honor with The House on the Lake. Continuing the Heather Bishop/Glenville Small Town Mystery Series, this installment definitely does not disappoint! The plot moves along quickly and doesn't confuse the reader or leave them bored as so many other so-called mysteries and thrillers have been known to do. I will anxiously await the next installment in the series!
Yet another enjoyable book by this author and in this series I am loving the two characters and wow has this one gone big. Thoroughly enjoyable and a great afternoon read couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next one
I was given an advance copy by the author but the review is entirely my own.
In the third installment of Cara Kent's Glenville Small Town Mystery series, Detective Heather Bishop is called to investigate the kidnapping of a highly successful plastic surgeon. With the help of the surgeon's CIA Agent son, Jason, they're on the hunt for a killer with revenge on his mind and no remorse in his heart.
Thoroughly enjoyed all three. Excitement suspense, family interaction, humor, all represented by a smart, determined and strong woman...my hero. Loved her character!
