As far as Connie Mason's older stories go, this one is a winner. The characters aren't completely reprehensible, there's no definitive rape (definitely some forced seduction though) and the angst is so thick you could cut it with a knife. That's not to say that this is quality literature or that the language isn't flowery or the characters occasionally stupid. I mean, the main Hero pretty much has multiple personality disorder. Is he Cole Webster or Shadow Walker and why does he talk about the other as though he were a different person? In either personality he mourns his dead wife Morning Mist and swears he will never love again.

So basically, Cole comes across Dawn, the virgin wife of an outlaw and he takes her virginity and her livelihood. Feeling guilty, he drags her along to the Sioux so she can choose another husband, all the while giving her lots of lovings. While there, Dawn tries to make a choice, but Shadow Walker's presence makes it hard to decide. She's in love with him but he will not love her and she won't accept anything less. And I appreciate a heroine who, for once, will not be swayed by anything less than what she wants. She is forced to marry him in a Sioux ceremony though after she miscarries. So then he drags her back to his sister's house so he can dump her there and be on his way. And Dawn calls him for the asshole he's being. I love it! He still leaves and then Dawn gets a bit TSTL and a lot bitter. Things wrap up from there, but I don't feel like Cole had to do nearly enough groveling to get what he wanted. I love that Dawn was such a strong heroine and had such limited bullshit tolerance...even if she did love a guy whose head was buried pretty far up his own ass.

Also weird - at least 3 separate characters with no prior interaction with each other said the exact same thing to Cole about memories not keeping him warm at night. A Sioux warrior, a Railroad Agent and a Southern Belle turned wife of a lumber magnate. It bugged me a bit.

It's predecessor Flame is my favorite book, and I am not disapointed at all with how this one was. I got sucked in so fast and wrapped into the story, it was just as passionate between Cole and Dawn as it was with Taylor and Ashley. Very recommened read, I think I'm going to try some more Connie Mason books, because if they are anything like the two I have read, it will be worth it.

The story really was good. Great love scenes. You got the typical I love you but want you to say it first drama. Only thing I never cared for was the 2 times that Cole was told she did not want sex and he turned her on so she would want to do it anyhow Ever after saying over and over she did not want him. He still used her body's response against him.

This is part two of a set by Ms. Mason. The first is "Flame." I enjoyed both and though I read them years ago, I remember them with a smile.

One of This Reader's favorites.

This book could have saved one tree and the story told in half the number of pages it took to culminate into this abyss.

quise darle una oportunidad pero pare cuando leí esto: "And a share of you, unless I misjudged the situation. Why did you shoot him? Didn't you like the way he was pleasuring you?"

A fun romance tale that has story elements which haven't aged well. Romance and angst? Yay! But the portrayal of Native Americans is problematic even if it was done with good intentions. Also, [spoilers] a White guy who dresses up and has a Native American persona is pretty uncomfortable as a plot device. What good romance novel doesn't have cringe moments though?

I liked this one even though it was a little outdated. This was a good companion to Flame and I liked all of the characters. However, I wish the hero was a little bit less selfish.

While I was reading the first pages of this novel, I found myself having a strong infatuation for Cole, he’s a type of man that every woman would want to marry. I loved how his devotion and loyalty to his deceased wife shows but as it passes by I grow frustrated because I am starting to have sympathy for Dawn. The plot twist and story line suprises me all the time because I have never thought of a way where they could actually be together, the author is very clever to make a jigsaw puzzle with the storyline so that it wouldn’t be predictable or boring. She could easily eliminate a hindrance but at the same time adding a new conflict and this makes the bond and relationship of the two characters ripe at the right time. Their love is hard fought and victorious.

I don't think I have ever quite devoured a book like I did this one. I didn't want to stop reading. My life was put on hold because I had to know what was next; I had to know how it ended. I was swept away. I loved Flame and I loved this book just as much if not more. I cannot possibly say enough about it. Great read. Amazing Read. The Perfect Read. Phenomenal.

This steamy historical romance was rather melodramatic with such terrible things happening to the heroine but it had plenty of action that kept me reading although I got so tired of hearing the hero say how he will never love again. Pinkerton detective Cole shot an outlaw and has to decide what to do with his widow Dawn.

I love Connie Mason's books. I couldn't put this book down. I was a great story from start to finish. I love how Connie included characters from the book FLAME back in this story. Overall it was a great book and I can't wait to read more of Connie's books!

Connie Mason was one of the first romance authors I read as a teenager and I've always loved her style. Yeah, the western genre is a bit cheesy, but the book was really enjoyable. There is a prequel to this book but the story makes sense without reading both.
