The people, places, and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim's lack of progress ... With a fair amount of fun along the way Friends Lovers and the Big Terrible So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who travelled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us.
Paul David Hewson, also known by his stage name Bono, is the main vocalist of the Irish rock band U2. Bono was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, and attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School where he met his wife, Ali Hewson, and the future members of U2. Since that time he has been referred to as Bono, his stage and nickname, by his family and fellow band members. Bono writes almost all U2 lyrics, often using political, social and religious themes. During their early years, Bono's lyrics contributed to U2's rebellious tone. As the band matured, his lyrics became inspired more by personal experiences with members of U2. Among his non-U2 endeavors, he has collaborated and recorded with numerous artists, sits on the board of Elevation Partners and has refurbished and now owns a hotel with fellow band member, The Edge. Bono is also widely known for his activism concerning Africa, for which he co-founded DATA. He has organized and played in several benefit concerts and has met with influential politicians. He is the co-founder of EDUN, the ONE Campaign and Product Red. Bono has been praised and criticized for his activism and involvement with U2. Bono has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, was granted an honorary knighthood by the United Kingdom, and was named as a Person of the Year by Time, among many other awards and nominations.
Bono knows how to sing but not how to write. His self conscious ponderings on his humble place in this strange world read like a series of school essays, the teacher having asked the class to discuss ‘pride’ or ‘success’. And way too many references to St. Paul.
I have read this work in January and I just finished listening to it in February. I cannot convey how much this book meant to me and how high it is on my “Life Favorites” list. This work is like the most joyous feast you could ever eat from and though there are tough moments or things readers might disagree on, Bono navigates it all with such lyrical grace. I can confess I cried twice reading this novel and that’s not my M.O. aka his story and life are simply wonderful. Seriously, read and listen to it! Whether you’re a U2 fan like me or like a good memoir, this is one of the best for sure.
I don't think one can write a memoir without a bit of namedropping. This book has heaps of dropped names but it was still inspiring. Bono showed a great capacity to reflect upon his life a superstar, son band member husband father and follower of Jesus. I enjoyed the read.
Honestly I’m surprised by this book: it is a journey not just in the music and life of U2 but also in the spiritual transformation of this band and Bono. Well done, Paul!
It’s good. A bit long at times and a bit name droppy, but good. It’s interesting to learn a bit more about his contributions to world health and AIDS care. It’s like a personal documentation of accomplishments, almost a check list of whats been done.
I give great kiddos for not making it about the band or their personal lives. It’s all very well with describing what has happened without being a tell all type.
This is a biography of Bono. Somewhat interesting, but a lot of name dropping. I'll give him credit for being an activist - against poverty, AIDS, Ireland civil war, etc, etc. He used his star power to promote worthy causes.
Some very interesting parts. And a good way to navigate. Would have been better with two books, one focussed on the music side (which I would read) and one on the activism side.
This feels like a book for fans, not common readers. The stories jump around, often without context. Would have been better if it was written like an autobiography.
