John White and Ken Blue outline how church discipline can be carried out in a way that fulfills all of its Biblical objectives. Includes two extended case studies.
Honestly great. Great for me and reminding that truth and correction is loving. Also big theme of humility and remembering the depth of our own sins and Christ’s forgiveness of us first so that we can forgive others. Extremely helpful, not just a book for church leaders but for every member of a church. And easy to read which is a big +.
“Any theology which is faithful to the Church of Jesus Christ…cannot but be a theology of reconciliation, for reconciliation belongs to the essential nature and mission of the Church in the world” p. 46
“Of course the sinner has to want to be reconciled, to want it badly enough to acknowledge sin and repent if it. Most of us understand this principle clearly enough when we preach the gospel to the unconverted. We fail to understand it when we think of our brothers and sisters in need of discipline” p. 53
“Intimacy and the potential for pain go hand in hand” p. 55
“Freedom is not “doing what you want”… freedom is doing what you were designed to do” p. 78
“The parable should be entitled, “The Searching Shepherd”, for the focus is in the concern of the shepherd who has sustained the loss” p. 88 (on Luke 15 parables)
“If it fills you with deep shame to confess to a close friend what is easily confessed to God, then your confession to God is in some sense unreal” p. 183
