My first book, Recovering the Ancient Magic, which reported on the psycho-religious beliefs of the ancient Polynesians and endeavored to explain the magic used by the native priests of Hawaii (the kahuna) was published in London in 1936.... The word kanuna is an ancient term and is in use today. It is pronounced "kah-hoo-nah" and meant "keeper of the secret." The word for their secret lore was never found. The role of secrecy had been so strong and so well kept that it may never have been given a name... The name we used, for this reason, was Huna (pronounced "hoo-nah"), which means "secret." .... [E]nough basic information will be incorporated in this book to give a working picture of the system of beliefs and practices upon which experimental work has been based.... Interspersed with the instructions will be found explanations of the sources of conclusions, of symbols, words, and word-roots familiar to Huna, but which we also found in other religions, mainly Christianity. Complete and utter bullshit. I expected at least *some* information about kahunas and their work in traditional Hawaiian religion. But the book starts off by saying that none of the kahunas would ever tell the author any of their secrets, then has a *really* thin explanation of how he "discovered" the secrets of their magic by studying the words in the Hawaiian dictionary. After like two pages of that it launches into hundreds of pages of unsupported baloney about spiritual selves and connections and praying to make miracles happen. I scanned through to see if there was any real content and found none. Bleck. Deserves zero stars.

This is the 3rd copy of this book! I gave my first copy away and found my 2nd copy. I don't use my 2nd because it is an old hardcover.

This book changed my life! Although it has been reprinted, I also have the paperback. Working through this book gives you the how and why it works. I took out the christian concepts on all his books and found that it works with any religion. Much like zen.
