Welcome to The Perdition Club, where games are played for the highest of stakes … Jonas Thacker wouldn’t be caught dead in The Perdition Club, a godforsaken den of iniquity where sinners go to play. However, notorious rakehell and Jonas’ former schoolmate, Derek Dryden, has begun courting his sister. Rumors have reached his ears that the scoundrel even plans to propose marriage! Determined to put a stop to the union, Jonas storms into Perdition searching for Derek. He never imagines that seeing him again will stir up a firestorm of passions he has spent years trying to stifle. Derek has no interest in marriage—least of all to Jonas’ sister—but past attempts at gaining his former friend’s attention have gone ignored. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Derek will stop at nothing to coerce Jonas into admitting that what they once shared was real and true. If Jonas will give in and admit that the desire and longing between them wasn’t one-sided all those years ago, then Derek will cease his pursuit of his sister. Jonas is determined not to play Derek’s game, but the truth of the past is too overwhelming to be ignored. As they engage in a battle of wills, both men will be forced to reconcile their past with their present, and the future they both desperately crave.
Victoria Vale writes erotic romance that refuses to stay in its lane. She hops between history and suspense, blending danger with desire until the edges blur. Her stories are marked by bold heroines, irresistible heroes, and heat that never behaves the way it should. Love Me Darkly (2025) proves passion is always at its best when it misbehaves.
Nothing new, nothing particularly exciting and Perdition doesn't have a very big role in anything.
It's a decent story and that's it, a decent and quick read.

There isn't much to tell.
Derek and Jones have gone to university together and formed a friendship of a sort, then became lovers when they realized they both weren't interested in women while visiting brothels.
Their past is told in passing, this book would've been much better if the story began there, talking about them meeting each other and having an affair, but it's happening 7 years later in London, when Derek is helping Jonas' sister snatch a husband and with it forces Jones to come back to society after avoiding it for those 7 long years.
They have a reunion and they become lovers again, they use Giles' room for a while and that's it. That's all there is to it.
Not particularly moving for me, could've been better.
The Perdition Club was the last place Jonas Thacker expected he would visit. However his former schoolmate, Derek Dryden, has begun courting his sister, Julia. As they engage in a battle of wills, both men will be forced to reconcile their past with their present, and the future they both desperately crave. This book whilst part of a multi author series is very easily read on its own. Another awesome read from the author the chemistry between Jonas & Derek is off the scale. An absolutely delicious steamy second chance romance, I loved everything about it & devoured it in a sitting. I loved the uptight Jonas & the seemingly rakish Derek & was totally invested in them finding their way back together My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I absolutely love to just get away and lose myself in one of her romance books. The drama, angst, secrets, and tension continually builds throughout the storyline while their passionate chemistry churns, builds, and ultimately boils over with a lack of containment. I hadn't known about the anthology until I got this Arc but now I find indeed to add the previous books to my want-to-read list.
I love Victoria Vale's books. I have been reading her since 2017 and this is my 24th book by her. This series has been very interesting and I have been enjoying it. Very different from my usual reads.
Thanks to BookSprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
I have to admit that I am a fan of Victoria Vale and her historical stories (I have not read any of her contemporary stories - just the historical). They have generally been well written, with engaging stories, interesting characters and at times quite intense. They are also quite steamy and sexually graphic and intense as well.
This is another installation in the Perdition Club world, so for those who are not aware or not interested, this is a MM romance, with graphic MM sex scenes. It is a historical gay romance with a second chance at love and forbidden love theme, as the characters are both male, and also interracial. Jonas is younger son who was in a close friendship with Derek when they were in school, and that warmed into a passionate affair when they were young men on a Grand Tour of the continent, years prior. Then suddenly Jonas broke ties with Derek, breaking his heart. Not only did Derek lose the love of his life, but also his best friend, and by extension, the only family love he had, as his own family was cold and rejecting of him.
Through the years, Jonas and Derek walked two separate paths. Jonas thwarted his passions and stayed in the country, eschewing Society, whereas Derek developed a reputation as a rake and scoundrel. But Jonas was forced to return to London and reenter Society when he hears news that Derek is courting his beloved and naive sister. He knows, intimately, that Derek would not be able to give his sister the loving relationship and marriage that she would deserve and is determined to stop Derek from courting her. To find his ex-lover, Jonas joins the Perdition Club, despite his disgust of is, as he is deeply suppressing his own deepest desires.
Derek has a deeper game in mind, and hopes to win back Jonas by challenging him to various wagers whereby if Jonas would win, Derek would give up his pursuit of his sister, but otherwise, if he loses, Derek can do with Jonas as he will. I am sure your imagination can carry forth from there... or even better - read the story! This is a love story of two men at a time when Society and the law harshly punishes same sex love, and that is a huge barrier between Derek and Jonas, and the story of what broke their relationship to begin with, and of their differing fears, of acceptance, rejection, and love.
Tropes MM, Past Lovers, Friends to Lovers, Second Chance, Second Sons, Novella
Whether it be a MM, MF, MMF, or (dare we hope someday a) FF romance… Victoria Vale concentrates 100% on the romance. It doesn’t matter what the pairings are… Victoria Vale just writes an amazingly brilliant story packed with passion and feels. That is why I adore her and will read whatever she writes.
Jonas and Derek’s story broke my heart. The love, the fear, the wasted time… oh my these two were so deliciously angsty. Derek was so stoic and determined to follow society’s rules… squashing down his feelings for Derek. Derek is a Devil-may-care gent who is willing to risk it all to win back the love he lost when Derek disappeared from his life. It’s a battle of wills between these two… and it’s a game where both of them wins at the end. And we all cheer “huzzah”!
I know her story plays out in the book… but I hope that we can read about Julia’s (Jonas’ sister) story.
Once again, round of applause for Victoria Vale for writing another brilliant story. And for giving me, not one but, TWO book boyfriends to drool over!! I heart Derek and Jonas so freaken hard!!

My star rating: 5 stars x 100!!! Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were amazing. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!
Where Derek Dryden is direct, confident and cocky, Jonas Thacker is uptight, repressed and shy. They’re both younger sons, went to university together and shared a passionate affair in Paris on their Grand Tour. Once returned to London a tragic night abruptly broke them apart. Derek never gave up on trying to reconnect, but Jonas exiled himself to keep his family and, most of all, Derek safe. Now, seven years later, Derek is done waiting. The rakish debauchery he threw himself into never filled the gaping hole the love of his life left. He joins forces with Jonas’ sister pretending to court her to draw him out. Furious, Jonas, who has been hiding in the country, returns to London. Even more so when Derek forces Jonas to find him at The Perdition Club. Let the games begin! Will the gamble of a lifetime reunite these two halves?
📚 The chemistry between these men is off the scale! So much passion, heart and deliciously steamy, this novella is a fast and captivating read as well a s a touching love story! Devouring it in one sitting, I loved it and can only recommend it! 📚 MM romance, ebony/ivory, pining, second chance, uptight/rake, steamy, open door
Thank you Victoria Vale and Booksprout for this eARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
Had to read A Dangerous Game by Victoria Vale because I blame her for my love of reading smut! A few years ago I stumbled across her Villain series and swiftly followed it with the Gentlemen Courtesans series and I was hooked! I always loved historical drama but when it's cloaked in Vale's sensuous darkness and laced with taboo Vale's writing hits another level! And my goodness those series were sooo damn good!!!
Since Victoria Vale was my initiation into the world of engaging smut I will always be willing to read anything by her and A Dangerous Game does not disappoint! Jonas and Derek are amazing and engaging characters totally into each other who have to survive severe, and very real, social constraints, but who deserve a HAE. loved it!
Again here Vale's expertise and art with historical writing (as in the previous mentioned series) is superb, her characters are real and fallible, and the settings, the romance, the speech, the whole plot is a testament to an era that is often hard to understand. But don't worry because you'll get historical accuracy with this author. You will love it!
Would have given 4.5 stars if it was possible.

I really liked this story plot. Jonas couldn’t believe his former schoolmate Derek had been courting his sister. He Even heard rumours that he plans to propose. Jonas plans for that never going to happen. These two have a history that no one knows except them. You see seven years ago while these two were in France, they began. A love affair. But Jonas new in this year two men together would never be except, so Jonas just disappeared Derek never forgot. Jonas is the one man he loved. He had tried by writing letters, but still Jonas didn’t show and now as the rumours are right, about the time he spends with his sister he now turns up at the Perdition Club where everything is accepted, nothing was taboo. They make their way to a private room where Jonas tells him he will never married Julia but the game has just begun. How will it end? it was very slow, but I just had to find out the ending of these two men. And I have got to say Jonas‘s sister Julia is amazing. It is without a shadow of a doubt that these two share a chemistry and passion that is off the charts that would Jonas ever give Derek a real chance?? A really good read.

This romance is a treasure! While I don't actively seek out M/M romances as a genre. I have read my share in the "romance" world. I don't normally search for these types of romances, because frankly they're usually not written well. It seems the majority focus more on the passionate scenes, rather then the romance. Also, many authors fail to actually make them historical. They don't include the challenges many faced during this time period, and they become nothing more then a contemporary romance with some historical terminology sprinkled through out the book. Victoria Vale wrote this romance wonderfully. While there were some passionate scenes, they took a backseat and the romance was forefront of the plot. The reader experiences a myriad of emotions. The yearning of love, the heart ache, the love of their families and the angst of trying to deny ones self. The Derek loves Jonas, but has not seen him in several years. He has tried to contact Jonas for years, only to have his letters unanswered. Society dictates that a man marries and sire an heir, so Derek becomes engaged to Jonas's sister, whom he has known since childhood. Jonas, wants his sister to have a love match and rushes home to stop the wedding. Even if you don't normally read M/M romances, I urge you to pick this one up. It was beautifully written, tender romance. Heat level medium , violence none.

This is my first book in this series and it got me in the feels. This is not my typical genre of books to read, however Ms. Vale does a wonderful job of drawing you in. Jonas Thacker and Derek Dryden were childhood friends who share a secret. While away at school, they embarked on a forbidden love that could ruin not only them but their families. When Jonas departs for the country and cuts all ties Derek is devastated and embarks on a life of debauchery and alcohol. When Derek set his sights on Jonas little sister, Jonas returns after 7 years to put an end to their courtship. Jonas and Derek were two tortured souls who never stopped loving each other and your heart hurts for their time apart. When Derek suggests Jonas play 3 games and if he beats him just once he will walk away from his sister. However, with each game Derek finds his heart being broken even though he wins. Can Jonas over come his fears before he breaks the man he loves? Overall, this was a emotional roller-coaster that I throughly enjoyed reading.

An enjoyable romp in the world of Perdition; Jonas is furious to learn that his ex-lover Derek has decided to marry his sister, Julia. He knows that Derek does not love her (being gay and all) so sets about to thwart the attempt. But this leaves him dragged back into the orbit of a man he never really got over… and one who wagers his three games - if Jonas wins, Derek will leave Julia alone. And if Derek wins? Well… he gets to have his way with Jonas, of course.
Although I did enjoy the premise of this book, I feel like I never truly bonded with either Jonas or Derek. Jonas has a hella case of internalised homophobia and self hatred, and although the reason for this becomes clear towards the end of the book, it is a complete mystery to me why Derek puts up with it for so long. I felt like there wasn’t a whole lot of character development for Jonas and certainly very little in the way of grovelling to make up for the appalling way he treated Derek. It was one of those ‘I treated you poorly to protect you’ deals, when all I want them to do it bloody talk about it!!
Even so, it was a short, fun read and another solid entry in the Perdition club series.
This was my FIrst ever encounter of the Perdition Club, and my first ever MM book. However I am very familiar with the authors other books, which is why I accepted the ARC copy. The way the story was written, and the emotion between Jonas and Derek was intense. She managed to clearly capture their feelings, worries, and the difficulties of their love at this time in history without diminishing the quality of the story. Yes there were some really steamy scenes, but these just add to the build up of emotions between them and it comes to a head, when they have to lay their cards on the table to each other. Will they get their second chance at love.

Derek and Jonas were quietly involved in their earlier years however, Jonas left Derek with no notice. Derek tried writing hundreds of letters to Jonas but he never responded. He did everything he could to get Jonas to notice him. Finally he decided to woo his younger sister and plan to propose. Jonas came rushing home to stop Derek from pursuing his sister. Derek proposed three games of chance and if Jonas won any one of the games Derek would leave his sister alone. But for every game Derek won Jonas would do whatever Derek asked. This story was so sweet and romantic with some angst. Great story of one person who loved the other so much they were willing to do anything to get them in their life. Loved it!.
Victoria Vale is the latest author to write a story for this series that follows male couples who belong to The Perdition Club in Regency England. This book does a good job of highlighting some of the problems that came with being gay in the past and how careful they had to be except in places like a club such as this one. I like how Ms. Vale works things out so that Julia gets a happy ending as well as Jonas and Derek. I would have liked more of the story but then agreeing to be together in those times was easier than actually being together would have been.

Victoria has returned with a book that gives us all of the emotions and angst that I love in her stories. Victoria’s writing is so intense and beautiful it is a joy reading any story she writes. Take this story, the storyline is both heartbreaking and stunning in the prose, Not everything is as it seems and Jonas and Derek’s journey back to love is fraught with misinformation but fortunately for us they find their way. I so missed reading Victoria’s beautiful verse.
This was a well written and engaging story. Jonas Thacker and Derek Dryden had once been lovers and now seven years later they were back in contact with each other. However, not for the purpose of rekindling their past love. Jonas had a loving family and he wouldn’t do anything that would cause them trouble, especially in this era when to be with another man had dangerous consequences. He had perfected the persona of an upright, correct gentleman. Derek was not from a loving family and he had developed quite a reputation for himself. I enjoyed their meetings and how they progressed. This is a steamy read but I would have liked an epilogue. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Once upon a time, Jonas and Derek were classmates and best friends. Then, in Paris, they became lovers, then something tore them apart. This regency romance is teeming with forbidden love and longing, and past heartbreak that still hurts. I aches along with Jonas and Derek - all Derek wanted was Jonas back, and Jonas longed…and yet. Oh, when they finally finally resolve things, their union was so desperately beautiful and heartfelt. A wonderful story by Victoria Vale.
Derek is courting Julia to make her brother talk to him - after 7 years of silence - Jonas is angry and determined that Julia will not marry Derek. Derek gives him an ultimatum to play 3 games with him...
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this engaging entertaining and unputdownable story of passion and daring to love against the odds. There's twists and turns that keeps a reader hooked into the story. Told from dual POV reveals intimately their thoughts feelings and emotions as they explore their relationship. There's an HEA.
Derek and Jonas were meant for each other since their university days. Unfortunate circumstances tore them apart.Derek never gave up on Jonas but Jonas hid himself from the world. Derek was done waiting after 7 years. He plots with Jonas's sister to draw him out. Derek was so sure of himself also comes across as cocky whereas Jonas is shy and uptight. The steam level was off charts. It was fun reading their banter.
Wow, what a book! Jonas and Derek's romance is full of intense emotions and raw feels and it really gave my heart a workout. Steamy and poignant, this romance had me bombarded with feelings as I witnessed the heart wrenching path these two traveled on the road to happiness. This is my candid, volitional review.
Wonderful story in the Perdition Club series featuring Jonas Thacker and Derek Dryden. Jonas and Derek have a past that Jonas wants to keep hidden. But their feelings and their attraction make that very difficult. Loved these characters and felt badly for their predicament. Part of a multi author steamy series that can be read as a standalone.
I loved that from start to finish Derek and Jonas have a story that has so many emotions. They have history but they weren't able to just be together. I loved that Derek wasn't going to just give up his love. I definitely wanted them to get their HEA and wasn't disappointed.

Jonas is back in London and searching for Derek at the Perdition Club, something he never thought he'd do...but his sister's happiness is on the line and he knows Derek isn't the right man for her, because he is his own past lover.
Derek is ready for a Cat and Mouse game with Jonas who is finally not ignoring him completely, but is the game for revenge or love?
This is a short novella that gives us a glimpse into both the men's history and their present situation... but I wish there was a few chapters giving us a better glimpse into their future HEA. This book definitely explores the guilt and stigma of being a gay man in the regency and whether it's a fight worth having. A Dangerous Game can be read as part of the Perdition Club series or as standalone.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I found it very nice that Jonas and Derek are able to get back together after a scare years earlier with the help of Julia who gets what she wants as well.
Seven years ago, Jonas left Derek without a word. He hasn't answered any of his letters and he stays far away from wherever Derek is. With the help of Jonas's sister, Derek has a plan to get Jonas back. I really enjoyed this book.
Finally I get back to this series and catch up on the episodes I've missed. Here we have a very painful read as Derek and Jonas reunite after a lengthy break up. Its angsty, painful and a gorgeous tale of love lost.
