Okay, I laughed out loud this issue. It's kind of hilarious.
It's such a quirky series and at times I really don't know how to take it. The humour is quite dark and reminds me of the old Ren & Stimpy cartoons, which never really worked for me. But I kind of like that morbidity here.
The artwork is fantastic, and a bundle of fun with all the bright colours and the full page spreads.
I have no idea where we're going with this one but I'll be along for the ride.
I absolutely love I Hate Fairyland. The art has lovely, rounded lines, and it’s bright and cheerfully colored. It’s also incredibly gory, but in a neon bubblegummy sort of way. In the 2022 run, Gert gets a new sidekick/guide. I kind of miss Larry, but I can’t wait to see how much working with Gert traumatizes Virgil.
Picked this up today with my weekly as part of my weekly pull list. There seems to be something different about the art. I can't quite put my finger on it. It's not that it is bad, just different. Some of the pages I thought were particularly well drawn. Paper seems extra glossy, however. Too much of an Amulet feel to some of this.
Nevertheless, fun times with Gert. Rich guy Wiggins has convinced Gert to travel back to Fairyland ostensibly to find his son. The reality is that the son has a watch that has collected data about Fairyland that Wiggins wants so he can take over Fairyland. The idea is that it will make the wealthiest man in the world even more so.
Gert is shrewd; she negotiates for half. You just know she's going to be screwed over in this deal.
A rat is sent to accompany Gert despite her protests. He will report back to Wiggins.
Surprisingly, they don't land in Fairyland but instead at the Inferno. This is hell before they can be let back in. Oh, only former guests can get to Fairyland without a specific invitation. Here in Inferno there will be trials and tests and all that. Virgil, the gatekeeper has hired himself out as a tour guide to Gert to get her through Inferno. It should be a piece of cake, barely an inconvenience. We see this has gone on for years. Apparently, his services are expensive. That should be of no concern to Gert as Wiggins is funding this escapade.
