Now, we may have no choice but to find another way to stop Lucifer.  Before we can make a decision, an attack forces me through the gateway where I encounter a new demon and the terrifying realm of his creation. It’s only a matter of time before Lucifer learns of her arrival in my world and sends his army after her. Desperate to make sure she stays safe, I must decide if an old ally is trustworthy or if he’s playing a game that will destroy us all.   *** Due to sexual content, violence, and language, this book is recommended for readers 18+ years of age.***

Did I know how much I would fall in love with this series when I happened to one-click the first book, Good Intentions? Nope. But fall in love I did. I couldn't help but helplessly fall for the plot, the world building, the main characters, all of the side characters, even the ones I'm supposed to hate, and everything in between. Kobal and River brought the fight for Hell alive for me and I could virtually smell the fire and brimstone and see the sparks from her fingers and the fire encompassing his. Alone they could definitely fight to the bitter end, but together I can't help but feel they'll actually win.

"We are each trying to find our own way in the world. Some have no idea who or what they are yet, but you will find out soon enough."

While this story had plenty of action, and I do mean blood and guts and magic and pain and gashes and death, I was suprised by how much love was felt even during the worst of times. There was love amongst the allies, who time and time again showed their loyalty and affection for the King and Queen of Hell. There was love between the friends and I had quite a laugh at their banter. And the love between Kobal and River... well, that just goes without saying.

No one could ever make me feel as small as he did, yet so incredibly powerful and cherished at the same time.

Kobal may be fictional as hell (see what I did there?), but he's earned his rightful place in my harem. Here's a man who never dreamed of finding his chosen. He lived a hard life, full of battles and glory, and was used to getting his way. Then he finds his Chosen, who happens to be a mortal girl, who also happens to be the descendant of his nemesis, and she is nothing like he expected. However, he's learned to care about humans, even if it was only to pacify her at first. He's protective and considerate and kind and thoughtful and giving and fierce and sexy and gosh I want my very own Kobal.

"Never doubt my love, River. You started as the possible key to all of this, but you are my Chosen. I would choose you over all else, even my own life."

The group has definitely weakened Lucifer's force, but the fight is far from over. I'm off to read Into Hell, to see my babes kick Lucy's sick butt!

2 STARS ★★✩✩✩
This book is for you if… you’ve started the series, might as well finish it. Or maybe you’ve got low standards for what romance should actually look like, even in the 21st century.

Preface.
I have something to confess. I typed up this review instead of working on my thesis. At my uni's library, the space designated for working. I’m not even ashamed. Let the consequences of my procrastination hit me full force.

Overall.
Let’s be real, the thing I liked most about this book is the fact that it brings me one book closer to finishing this series. My ADD do be like that.

In all honesty, this was a total flop romance wise, and the hot scenes could not make up for it. Not one bit. This series is such a rollercoaster-ride in this regard: Good Intentions was the best out of all the books, except that the romance was a bit disturbing. Then the series seemed to be picking up in the romance department with Good Intentions, but the plot got worse. The Road combines the worst of the two.

Don’t get me wrong, y’all, I’m all in for some steam and smut. This is the 21st century, though. Abusive romance disguised as caring is not even acceptable when the supernatural is involved, which supposedly impacts the nature of a relationship. This is not 2006. Romance readers got standards now, please adjust. It’s not the worst relationship out there but some of Kobal’s thought and actions really freaked me out. Example: His ‘chosen’ is in grave danger yet he thinks of all the stuff he’d like to do to his best friend who’s merely holding her so she won’t have to lie abandoned on the grounds of hell and is kept safe. Supposedly his protection would be da best. Spoiler alert: it isn't. It's just plain rubbish, amiright?

Anyways, not in the mood to get into this, it wasn’t that bad. Not good either, though, so I'm not sure it even deserves a pro/con. The Hufflepuff inside me can't resist it though, they're usually fun to make up. Obviously I’ll read the last part eventually, paid .99 for the series after all. Gotta make them .25 cents worth it.

What’s happening.
‘Good intentions carved the road to hell.’

I was years old when I found out the book titles of this series, when put together in their order, actually are the phrase above. Quite sneaky, but not as sneaky as Lucifer trying to get a hold of River, his part-human-part-demon-part-angel heir. Lucifer's so smart about it, he manages to draw the King and Queen of hell into hell together with a bunch of friends. Ain’t that a recipe for disaster? Damn straight it is.
Con:
king of hell still acts like trash sometimes
lucifer's got the bigger numbers
own numbers are dwindeling
Pro:
introduced to quirky demon Magnus [heart-throb]
River's powers more badass every day
lots of sweaty good looking fellas in hell

Nope, I'm done. I was forcing myself to keep reading. No, it was worse than that. I was avoiding reading - for days. I will leave a series unfinished because I just can't keep wading through repetitive action scenes; monotonous sex; excessive, inside-the-mind emotional and insecure blathering; and characters with whom I cannot form a sentimental connection. This is a series that with decent editing and tight writing should have maxed out at two books. The high overall goodreads ratings and gushing reviews make me think it is just me, but the little demon on my shoulder is making me offer up my opinion anyway. I fought my way through 3.25 books into the 4 book Road to Hell.

Book 3 is left unrated because I didn't finish it.

AUDIBLE EDITION IS EXCELLENT!!

I got to the point I had to skip over chapters to get to the last 8 chapters of the end of the story!!

Book 3 The Road to Hell is one weird fight scene after another with hideous creatures. Usually followed by a sex scene between Cobal and River. No story to break up all the fighting and sex.

We do meet Rivers biological father who is working for Lucifer and we meet up with Lucifer towards the end of this book. Another big fight with more hideous creatures.

Did I think that when I added this series to my want to read list a few months ago, (hesitantly sad to say) that it would wind up being one of the best PNR series I’ve ever read? NOPE! Book after book, The Road to Hell series has continued to shock the “Hell” out of me!!!

After the end of Carved, we knew it was only a matter of time before River was going to have to go into Hell. Whether it is was because she wasn’t able to close the gateway and her and Kobal and the others would have to go in, or if someone or something forced her in. Brenda has taken being detailed to a whole other plane throughout this entire series, but especially in The Road! I have never read about so many different types of demons and the different abilities they possess. As well as Hell itself! From the rocks to the trees and even the ground they walk on, she does such a good job that you can see it and picture it so clearly! Because Brenda is so awesome at this I knew we were going to see some crazy ass stuff in Hell, and boy did we! The demons that we see in The Road make all the other ones we’ve seen in the prior two books look like tiny fluffy bunnies.

I have to say that I am OBSESSED with the Skelleins!!! I love those boney little dudes with their beer drinking riddle loving selfs!! I was so happy that they had a part in River’s journey. The side characters continue to be amazing and so well developed in this series. I love how we get to dive deeper into River and Hawk’s friendship as well as Corson Bale’s friendship in this story. You can see that the respect and loyalty they all have for River has grown into something so much deeper. And I’m pretty sure I’m stating the obvious here, but Kobal and River continue to set pages on fire!! It doesn’t seem like it’s possible but their connection and chemistry continue to grow, and I’m loving every second of it! There is a scene between them in here that is one of the best scenes I’ve ever read in ANY book, and I can guarantee I won’t ever be forgetting! Even though it’s going to break my heart to see this story come to an end, I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!!

Jesus Christ, this book is insane! My heart was beating erratically and my adrenaline was pumping through each and every turn of the page!

River and Hawk get separated from everyone else and are backed into a corner, which leaves them no choice but to venture into the Gates of Hell together.

description

They enter a twisted carnival of horrors, have to battle beasts on a carousel and all kinds of sinister creatures from Hell's abominations - and I'll add here that the author has quite the imagination when introducing all of the vivid illusions experienced during Hell's wild ride. I didn't think that River and Hawk were ever going to get a reprieve while battling for their lives, which kept me in a constant state of suspense.

And Kobal's desperation to get to River never waivers. I absolutely adore him and how protective and passionate he is.. who knew demons could actually have a heart? Ahhhh I just love him so much! That sexy demon has definitely made his way to my top 5 book boyfriends list.

description

The deeper River journeys into Hell, the more she finds how to use her fire-wielding and life-drawing powers with the help of some unexpected allies, which made for some interesting new character introductions. Whether it's angst, sex, conflict or action, this story is always moving at a fast pace with one thrill experienced after another. These characters keep getting thrown into dire situations where it's seems almost impossible to get out of, but they come back swinging even harder each and every time, which makes it difficult for me to put it down for even a second. I AM COMPLETELY HOOKED ON THIS SERIES!

The group finally journeys into Hell after failing to close the gate in time. As they move closer to confronting Lucifer and reclaiming Kobal’s throne, they must also protect River from being taken by Lucifer himself.

This book almost earned four stars, but there were several issues that held it back.
The first third of the story was rough. Once again, there was a frustrating amount of repetition—something that already bothered me in book two, and unfortunately it continues here. For the first time in this series, I found myself skimming pages. There was a lot of running, hiding, and characters trying to catch up with one another, yet very little of it actually contributed to the plot. I didn’t find any of this particularly engaging or exciting.
Thankfully, the story improves significantly once River and Hawk reach the carnival. We’re introduced to a fantastic new character, Magnus, who quickly became a highlight. When the group enters the forest, the book truly finds its footing. The world-building becomes richer, the scenery more vivid, and the variety of creatures more interesting. The action finally ramps up, and I was fully pulled back into the story. At this point, I also became completely obsessed with the Skelleins—they’re wicked, funny, and far more complex than they initially appear.

The ending was strong and left me eager to jump straight into book four. I need to know how this story concludes, and I’m hoping the final installment delivers at least one massive, unforgettable action sequence.

This book did a good job of really pulling you into Hell and make you understand that shit is just wild in Hell, what with it's crazy creatures and the like.

River and Kobal are so good together. They work well with one another strengths and weaknesses. They're so fun to read about. I wish there would've been more like separation maybe? Like they are just always together it seems.

Maybe we'll get more of them on their own in the final book. I just think we know them so well together that we need to learn them separate?

On to the final book! :D

Quick review. This is the 3rd book in The Road to Hell series. In this one River and Hawk find themselves in Hell alone as they take cover from an attack on the gateway, while Kobal is left outside. It isn't too long before he does catch up to them but River goes through quite a bit before seeing Kobal again.

I thought this was the last book but this is a four book series.

Random Thoughts:

💘 The man is still sooooo soft with her.

💘 I can't even.

💘 He will die for her.

💘 There's more to River than anyone could ever imagine.

💘 A not so shocking reunion in hell.

💘 Love just how soft he is with her.

Phenomenal is the only word I could think of to describe this story. You must read the other two books before staring this one, because there may be book 1 and book 2 spoilers in my review.

River and Kobal have entered Hell and it goes about how you expect that it would. The amount of obstacles that had to overcome was staggering. There was actually a sequence in this book that might give me nightmares. We were left hanging about something that involves one of her friends in the last book and we find out exactly what that is in this one. The story also had a jaw dropping moment that I did not see coming.

There of course was River and Kobal hotness... a lot...that made this girl blush. Loved the book and the series and am dying for the next one. Hurry up!!

Five stars!

The Road is the third novel in the Road to Hell series by USA Today bestselling author Brenda K. Davies. The first two novels in the series were fast, thrilling, and action-filled, and The Road follows true to its predecessors. Kobal, River, and others who have loyally followed them, have finally made it to the pit leading into hell. River, as promised, works diligently on closing the gateway, though is unsuccessful. A surprise attack from demons as silent as death, though deadlier than most other demons, forces River and a handful of others onto the roadway descending into hell. The further down they go, the more sweltering the heat is, forcing the others to halt their descent, and for River and one of her loyal friends to continue alone.

Meanwhile, Kobal and the other demons vanquish their attackers and hurry after River and the others. The period of time between River and Hawk’s venture into hell, and Kobal’s desperate attempt to catch up to them is heart-pounding and exciting. We are introduced to new demons such as Valkyries, and new horrific experiences such as the twisted carousel that leads River and Hawk into a carnival that isn’t all innocent fun and games. This introduction into hell is exactly what imagined it would be like- twisted, dark, and spine-chilling. Carnivals have always creeped me out and this one was no exception. But I will say, what a marvelous introduction to a new character!

On occasion, when I read a series featuring the same couple, the chemistry and passion between them, by the end of book two and all novels following it, begins to feel redundant- or it simmers to a point where I think, “Well, good for them. Now what?” That is NOT the case with this series! I swear I jump ten degrees whenever Kobal and River decide to get down and dirty- it doesn’t matter if it’s in a tent outside a wall separating the states, or in the sweltering bowels of hell- these two retain the heat!

And those trees in hell? Well, they reminded me fondly of the whomping willow in the Harry Potter series- except these ones will literally obliterate a massive ogre and tear an individual limb-by-limb. However, unlike the memorable whomping willow, these trees are also capable of a little cuddle and playtime- very Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-ish.

Five stars for The Road!!

I skimmed so much of this book. It is just so boring. And then I stopped altogether before she went into hell. Honestly could they just skip to the end? The author really dragged this out for a whole other book. I just don’t care. I’m getting zero joy. I just don’t like the main characters.

This whole read ended up being a 2 star ok read. Neither here nor there, unfortunately.

The main reason for this is the main h chosen as the eyes through which the reader experiences the world created by the author. On the surface, one can see the effort the author has put into creating this world. The story, the characters, and the overall plot. While I find biblical apocalyptic stories a rather problematic thing to try to realize as Christianity is not really conducive to being embodied in a realized story that will have character question and uncover all its little flaws and contradictions that cannot fully be questioned now as for now it's just a metaphorical story of the religious script that primarily based on the faith of belief that any facts that can be proven. So when authors try to bring all those many contradictory stories to life they can fall apart rather easily with some level-headed reasoning and questioning and usually prove a rather shaky ground on to base one's fictional world.

In this case, it was kind of like that as well, but I was sort of on board with the world as I saw the author tried to establish her world with some info and characters and lead the reader to understand how everything works. The point where the story falls apart for me is in its overall feel of YA. While the h is not exactly a teenager she is mentally very young as such she is just a lamb in the woods of this crazy world. The author imbues her with these awesome powers and potential, she is all speshul as all paranormal h tend to be, but her mindset is all 'why me, how ever shall I save this world on my own while watching all these people die for me and resist the evil draw of my ancestry.' It… gets old after a while.

Here is the largest pitfall in choosing to have your heroine be so young and inexperienced in all things: THEY. NEVER. ASK. THE. RIGHT. QUESTIONS. And in this way the information dolled out to the reader is painfully slow and many times repetitive as it's focused on all the internal drama of this post-pubescent hormonal girl.

There is this point in the second book where we learn (not sure if this was mentioned in the previous book, but this is when it caught my attention) that demons and angels when they die just disappear whereas the humans have a soul that is eternal and either goes to hell or heaven and gets reincarnated later on once it's served its time. Not an altogether novel notion as this has been mentioned in many other fiction worlds and has even been used as the reason for Lucifer's rebellion in some. As it was the bone of contention which showed God's greater love for men to give them an immortal soul and make angels their servents which made Lucifer rage out and rebel against him. If there ever is a reason for a child to rebel against their parent this is as strongest as one can imagine. I mention this as this is not used as the reason for Lucifer's rebellion here. He is mostly just described as an evil creature that has broken with the goodness of life (whatever the h explains it, its kind of weak sauce so I forgot it), and then the h just spirals over and over about turning evil like him and takes away from any point this epic story might carry and the message it might have. It just simplified as seen by our very naïve h who only sees the world in black and white as God is the ultimate good and Lucifer being the worst and there is no other nuance that can be glimpsed by the reader from any motives as to the God/Lucifer ultimate story that can be explored. Again this is largely due to the h being so young and never wanting to ask the relevant questions.

Probably will be putting the rest of the review in some spoilers as I reviewed this as whole of the 3 book series as I read it and some details from the later books will be in here too:

The fascinating part of finding out that demons and angels just go puff when they die and humans have an immortal soul is

As such this story fell short in this regard and I was not as engaged in it as I was just not attached to the h and how she uncovers the story. I wanted to know more than she was willing to uncover and it just cheaped the great story the author tried to establish. I understand some universe created by the author sometimes will have questions that the author cannot answer as such she cannot have her characters picking it apart and revealing the gaping holes in the fabric of her creation. But I just felt it was all just a cheap romance plot that did not dare delve deeper cuz of this. So I was not particularly attached or engaged with the outcome and was just along for the ride to see how it ends and gets resolved, but I was not at the edge of my seat wondering what happens to this character and that and having my mind blown.

So just a meh read, and by the looks of it, I can see the author prefers all her heroines collage age being thrust into this epic world-altering stories while they have no clue what is going on and just stumbling through with the help of some hunk to survive at the end and… I just do not think I can go along the ride anymore. Maybe years ago I would be intrigued but I just need more now.

Intense! Things only become more and more intense as the series goes on! More secrets are spilled causing River some doubts and causing Kobal to rethink his strategy when it comes to keeping things from her "for her own good". Some serious fighting happens and super surprising moments. Yeah, they follow the road down into hell and it is hot. And loaded with danger. Then there is this super creepy carnival...oh yeah. That part could give me nightmares. Coming from this author, the level of creeptasticness is surprising and cool because she definitely pulls it off well!

The first book of the series was quite good, but after that one it went downhill. In this one I had to skip parts because I was so bored reading it, it was way too repetetive and not much happened plot-wise. Will probably not read the last book in this serie.
