Pivotal Praying: Connecting with God in Times of Great Need

Rate this book

We all face critical forks in the road-marriage, the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, or a personal health crisis. How are we to pray at these junctures? Perhaps our instinct is to send up a quick "911" prayer, but authors John Hull and Tim Elmore demonstrate how by praying the right prayer at the right time, we can see the incredible impact of what God can do.

Scripture offers countless examples of men and women who prayed strategically and saw results. Remember Solomon's prayer for wisdom? He received it-and wealth beyond his imagination as well. And how about Hannah's desire for a child? God honored her prayer; her son Samuel became the greatest judge in Israel's history. Pivotal Praying uses these examples and others to illustrate the power of effective-and ineffective-praying. For those seeking to enlarge their prayer vision and alter their circumstances for God's glory, Pivotal Praying is an ideal resource.

I struggle with prayer because I struggle putting intention behind my prayers. This was a really good book to read. It’s full of examples of prayer and stories where prayer changed the lives of people, as well as reasons why we should pray and different types of prayer.

The authors begin by defining what they mean by pivotal praying, and then each chapter highlights a situation in which pivotal praying becomes essential. The situations include: when you're facing a crisis, when your dreams don't come true, when you want to make a difference, when you have failed, when you need direction, when you don't see results, when you need a miracle, when you face opposition, when you need to let go, when you're in over your head, when you want to quit, when you confront a new challenge, when you need to wait, when you are under pressure, and when you need to take a stand. The book closes with a brief chapter on 911 prayers and a chapter on the most important pivotal prayer you'll ever pray (the prayer in which you place your trust in Jesus Christ). I found this book to be helpful in keeping me focused on the power of prayer to get me through the thorny situations in life.

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for years, and for some reason I had never even started it. I recently heard it said that what makes a book really good or bad is how it affects you at the time you read it. I think if I had read this book at other times in my life, I may not have liked it as much, but I think I read it at just the right time. It was just the kind of challenge I needed at this point in my life to pray big prayers, not routine or genie in a bottle prayers. Hull and Elmore address praying in various stages of life and do a really good job of giving specific examples and challenging the reader to trust God in any circumstance. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, but especially if you feel like you need a little boost in your prayer life.
