Dennis Lehane (born Aug 4th, 1966) is an American author. He has written several novels, including the New York Times bestseller Mystic River, which was later made into an Academy Award winning film, also called Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon (Lehane can be briefly seen waving from a car in the parade scene at the end of the film). The novel was a finalist for the PEN/Winship Award and won the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel, the Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction, and France's Prix Mystere de la Critique.
Great P.I. series set in Boston. A little gritty with a tough guy protaganist, hot female partner, and plenty of street style justice. Well written, with good plots and characters. Very entertaining and satisfying to read. I really enjoyed these books and have read them all at least twice
Dennis Lehane is my absolute favorite writer....in a genre where good writing is hard to find, he is so far and above everyone else, a great writer in any genre....his writing is dark and gritty - there are no happy endings for his characters - the writing is so clean and crisp - his ability to self-edit, and boil a sentence down to it's most basic elements sets him apart from so many other writers today....Dennis Lehane is Awesome.
After Gone, Baby, Gone and Mystic River were released as such provoking films, I had to read the books by Dennis Lehane.
I'm forever searching for fiction that has some strange mix of highly compelling characters, a story that I don't see through, lack of predictability and high page turning quality. This met the bill for me.
Should give these 5 stars instead of 4 cuz I keep re-reading them, but I think that's just because I've developed a crush on Bubba, one of the characters. I've got this thing for sociopaths, ya see.... Anyway, these are excellent, gritty crime noir.
A Drink Before War is my first read of the Lehane series. I had a "cave" day yesterday and finished it in one sitting; it's under 300 pages. I liked his writing and particularly enjoyed the familiar Boston setting.
Sacred is the best one!...really suspenseful, quick reads. Kind of over-the-top detective stuff...If you saw Gone, Baby, Gone- these are all written by the same guy.
Read these! If you can handle some seriously great characters caught up in seriously dark stuff--- this series is going to make you a fan of Mr. Lehane.
