After clearing my weekend to accommodate my new flurona lifestyle, I thought it would be fun to read something light. Zombie comics once felt like an exhilarating idea to me. Today I picked up Zombie Tales Volume 1 mostly hoping to burn through it and get rid of it. Sadly, ZT1 is pretty good and now I'm stuck in a position where about 85 - 90% of this graphic novel works and I mean through interesting premises, genre satire, and thoughtful illustration. The problem is I don't know if that's enough to justify holding onto more zombie comics...
I wish I could remember where I bought my copy and who signed it. I'm sure that would help my decision. 😂
Entertaining. Some interesting story direction. Note that a few stories start a couple pages before their title page. In this format, makes them appear to be part of the previous story, which had already reached end.
This was another impulse buy from my local used book store. It was a REALLY disappointing read.
Most of the art was average for comic art but just looked really out of place for zombies, coming off as too cartoon like. Most of the stories were FAR to short to deliver much of anything worth reading. I'd like to think that short story type anthology's can work for comics, but it definitely didn't work here.
The only 2 story's that I felt were even worth the time I spent reading were "For Pete's Sake" and "The Miracle of Bethany". The second being by far my favorite. The idea for it was REALLY good and I would have liked to see much longer treatment of the idea.
All and all I wouldn't recommend this. than again my zombie tastes tend to be rather highbrow and I'm fairly hard to please.
I found myself needing to round this score up as much because of many of the other reviews dogging this collection as anything else. There were a few very special stories, and a few that were so-so at best. But, as crazy as it sounds, (and I promise it's not a zombie thing) I found this more engaging than Flight #1.
After reading this, I added a few comics to my to-read that I might have never found otherwise. I think the day-to-day look at zombies was most interesting. I don't know I would buy it at full price, but I was very happy to have borrowed and read it.
I've enjoyed horror comics for many years, from WHERE MONSTERS DWELL through CREEPY and EERIE and on up through current titles. I was, however, a bit skeptical about reading this series, fearing that a steady diet of zombie stories could prove repetitive quickly. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that this was not the case. To the contrary, I was actually struck by the variety of tales on offer, and the many different approaches to what is essentially a common background. As with any anthology, some stories were stronger than others, but the average quality was quite high. These aren't likely to convert non-fans of the genre, but zombie enthusiasts should enjoy the ride.
A strange anthology with the typical anthology problems. Some stories are awesome, and they get weighed down by the lesser ones as a result. I'm probably more forgiving of it since I love a good zombie story, and this mostly scratched that itch, but I ultimately spent more time wishing it was a little better.
Zombie Tales is an anthology, so suffers from the same problem as most - a few good stories, most mediocre, and a couple dreadful. Harmless as a quick read, though.
What if the dead were undead? How did this happen? Can they be stopped? What comes after the invasion? All this and more are answered in this gruesome undying book from the dead. Your arms can't seem to part. Oh, wait, they just fell of. All the zombie tales you can ever need or want is in this book. Well what are you waiting for. Drop that brain and read it. This is a good book for zombie fans.
