An overview of the different historical periods of Crete. Full of maps and with several plates of photographs in the back, some floor plans and schematics of pottery designs.
Despite the care taken, this book manages to get lost in the details, especially over pottery and dating, making it hard to create a picture in the mind of each period as it evolved and the society that functioned within it.
There is an overview chapter for the Minoan periods at the end, which I wish had been placed at the beginning of the book, but on the whole more interesting for the reader who already has a grasp on the Minoan civilization and the different periods. I also wish that there had been more illustrations, written descriptions being very difficult without visual aid for the amateur.
But, still interesting.

If anyone is starved for fresh scholarship about Crete this book will definitely serve as a seven course meal. It is both enlightening and easily taken in. Crete has always been a mysterious part of Biblical studies but his achievement has truly opened the door of inquiry that is coupled with world class scholarship and intense investigation. Very well researched and delivered in fine fashion.
