An unexpected entrance by another of the Noah interrupts the order's attempts to study the akuma creation egg. With most of the exorcists still recovering, the science department is at a disadvantage. Allen is the first to recognize what is happening, as he is able to detect the akuma arriving with the Noah using his innocence-enhanced eye. As the scientists find themselves nearly at the mercy of the powerful Noah, Allen and the exorcist generals must attempt to stop the egg from being recaptured by the earl, preserving as many lives as possible.

With the increased power of the akuma, Lenalee's evolved innocence may be the only way to prevent the black order's headquarters from completely being destroyed.

The headquarters is under attack by a new villain in Noah Clan. Ohmygod. I was scared the whole time, so many died, too much blood.

But i'm glad we get too see the general fight alongside with other exorcist. They really are 'general', you can see the difference of their ability.

Overall, another intense battle and heartbreak volumes.

Sometimes D. Gray-Man is so good you sit there in awe of the really cool and poignant storyline. Sometimes you sit there going ‘Did half the panels disappear and not get translated?’ This is the latter. I even went back to #14 and tried to find the narrative thread but no such luck. I’ve noticed this happens when Hoshino tries to do battle scenes. She seems to miss a step when she does and since this is pretty much one long (and important) battle scene there is this sense of ‘did I miss something?’

Long story short, Lavi, Krory, Lenalee Kanda & Allen have returned to the Black Order to rest and have their innocence repaired, which is still a very strange concept to me. Krory is still unconscious. Lavi & Kanda’s weapons are broken. Lenalee can no longer synchronize with her innocence, which is something I wish had been clearer earlier and I might have been less harsh in my judgment of her. I have to admit the parts I liked best about this dealt with Lenalee in that it’s really the first clue we have that her dark boots are icy cold and heavy and hurt her but she’s willing to risk dying if it means she could resynchronize with her innocence.

The Lust Noah, Lulu Bell (seriously? Wasn’t there a cow with name…no I think that was Clara Bell but that’s where my brain went) has infiltrated the science department to retrieve the egg that makes the Millennium Earl’s ark work and scientists are falling left and right (not exactly a good thing for Komui and Reever). Allen and the generals go off to fight. Unfortunately something happens no one is expecting, an akuma evolves to an unheard of Level 4 and the entire Black Order complex may have to be deserted. The ideas in this are good. The character development is as well. However, the action scenes are choppy and occasionally hard to follow.

4/5 Another all action book. I like it a little more when there’s some small breaks in the action. Head quarters is still under attack as The Earl and The Lust of Noah try to reclaim The Ark from The Order. Things are a little dark in this volume and we’re introduced to a Level 4 Akuma. Fun Cover with Kanda, Maria, and the artist general.

I am adoring the whole conflict that Lavi having with himself in terms of acting as a 'Bookman' and as a friend. Especially the last two chapters of this volume. The look he gave Leverrier gave me chills.

It's also fun to note how close Kanda and Lenalee are without them interacting that much. Kanda calling Lenalee strong is just proof that he has high regards for her, which is rare for him.

The concept of an akuma evolving more and more to look like a human being is also interesting, which Bookman touches upon. This is the first Level 4 the Order has ever encountered, and with each 'level' we see more human characteristics evolve alongside the akuma. From mindless weapons, to weapons with thoughts/language to a level three that looks like a skeleton of a human being, we have seen this process happening already but it is even more dramatic with the level 4. The fact that it has both male and female characteristics (looking at the chest, we can see this) and is almost "child-like" represents duality and deception. The more powerful the akuma becomes, the more it resembles a human being. A child's mask can throw us off with the promise of 'innocence' (oh, the irony).

What I'm looking forward to learning is why the level 4 reacted to Allen crying the way that it did and whether or not the Earl has any control over this type of akuma. Seeing as it blasted the skulls, it seems impartial to whom it kills. I'm going to stop ranting now, there's just so much to think about.

New foes appear in this volume, and even though I know how this battle turned out going in, it's still intense.

We see the Generals fight alongside Allen, and even in the handful of panels we see them in, you can tell these guys are at a totally different level.

(Also, can I just say I love how put out Kanda looks on the cover of this one?)

I really felt how much Lenalee and Komui love each other, and I feel sad for how much the Order and the Akuma have taken from them. It's heartbreaking.

I'm glad I read it. The manga can still use improvement but there's a lot that you can see has been already improved upon.

It’s a huge, splattering battle where akuma invade the Black Order, searching for the Ark, lead by Lulu Bell, Noah of Lust. All the generals get involved. Not all of the science team survives. Sometimes it’s hard to see what’s happening amidst all the splat, but the energy is intense along with the quiet moments between fights. One of those moments is when a new akuma, more powerful than any seen before seems confused about its purpose until Allen turns away from it in revulsion, attacking it. This reminds the akuma that violence is its purpose. The creature sets its sights on Komui, putting him into peril which reminds Lenalee of why she’s with the Black Order. All she needs is a push in the right direction.

It’s great to see Lenalee develop. I feel like she does better when there are other female characters around her than when she’s in the singular stereotype of “the girl”. She brought out the depth in the hard-looking nurse caring for her, a character whom might have ended up being a stereotype otherwise. Allen’s moments with a remorseful Johnny trying to get his lost teammate back were messy yet touching. I feel like this manga and its characters have evolved a bit right along with the akuma.

Character 4| Setting 5| Art 4| Plot 3.5| Enjoyment 4

Rating: 4.1

This volume we get to see more of Louvielier and we get to see Lenalee's terrified of him(our main girls got traummmaaaa)

We also get to see Lulu Bell as she attacks the order to get the Egg, Lulu Bell is just very sexy. I love a shapeshifter. Girls got it going onnnn.

Also got some hilarious banter about the agents watching Cross, Link has it easy tbh.

There is a lot of attacking on the science division which causes Komui to say to destory the egg, but Louvelier want to keep it to study it, we can see that Louvelier doesn't really care about the people in the order and cares more for results.

We're back with some action in this one. One of the Noah infiltrates the Black Order headquarters to steal back the egg the Earl uses to create Akuma. Things get more terrible when a new evolution of Akuma appears. Additionally, Lenalee must come to terms with her role as an exorcist.

This one was alright, there is a lot of carnage and desperate moments. I hope we're not in for another really drawn out action sequence. I am ready to see Lenalee kick some ass again instead of being the damsel in distress though.

Pretty slick action sequences throughout as the Akuma invade the headquarters of the Black Order. At least this should end the "Allen is under suspicion" bit the creative team was playing. I did like the ide of Walker having some secret past/tie to the Akuma, but the idea that he would fall under suspicion without having done anything was just annoying.

Aaaaand so begins another full volume of nothing but fighting and will they-won't they scenarios when it comes to the innocence. Man, this series would be so much more fun if they just slowed down longer between fights.

This was a good and shocking volume that steps up on character development with Lenalee and the power creep with the Level 4 threat being created in the exorsists base. Yet all of this was just utterly gripping in all of this.

The fight continues, and it looks like they are backed into a corner. I do have to say that Lenalee trying to get her powers back is a dangerous move, but hopefully, it works. All in all, it's a good volume.
