Ελάχιστα ξέρουμε για την φρίκη του WWI.η ακομα μεγαλύτερη φρίκη του WWII,κάλυψε τα πάντα . Ποιος θυμάται λοιπόν το μακρινό παρελθόν ; Την αγριότητα του ;τα εκατομμύρια των ασκόπως σκοτωμένων ;

J'ai fini!!!

Finally, twelve years afterwards first buying (and starting) this book. I first saw it as a film as a sixth former in 2005 and really liked it (probably because it was one of the first French films I'd seen and my French teacher was a fan of the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet).

I think I started and stopped it so many times because it really takes quite a while to get going. It turns out it's really important to understand the backgrounds and families of the 5 men condemned to death because of trying to injure themselves to get out of the trenches of the first World War, but it's not clear why at the time.

There are lots of characters in this book, and much of the plot is advances through letters (which I don't mind), which forces us to try and piece together events as we get new information, much like Mathilde who is trying to discover what has become of her fiancé Manech. Really, this is more like a detective story than anything else with the level of detail about who, where, and when - though unusually we know how and why the victims have died, but not how one or more men survived and where they are now.

I was originally going to give this 3 stars because it was pretty tough going, especially with its forensic attention to detail in the 48 hours in 'Bingo Crépuscule' (I loved hearing how it got its name, as that didn't come up in the film) - not just because it was in French! The parts relating to the trenches I found doubly hard due to not being that interested in the mechanics of war, and the wide range of vocabulary I was unfamiliar with.

However, Mathilde wins you over in spite of herself (and yourself) with her obstinacy, courage, and love. Plus, there is a great deal of sneaky, dry humour in the writing (and a lot of negative constructions - perhaps I mainly noticed these as I've been teaching them recently, but Japrisot has a knack of confusing you with them, layering them one on top of the other, and sometimes leaving out the ne..., perhaps to disorient us further and reflect the tricks and lies the past is playing on Mathilde as she tries to uncover the truth... or maybe I'm just thinking about it too much!!).

Anyway. If nothing else it was great to read a book in French NOT written by Marc Levy...

One of the best novels I ever got to read. I can only recommend it to anyone interested in that particular era. A lesson in how our ancestors lived and the many tragedies that were tied to WW1. Another lesson: love and determination can do incredible things. Mathilde is such a wholesome, frank, believable character.
I may be biased because I am a huge Japrisot fan and the early 20th Century is my favourite period of history, but please believe me when I say that this book is wonderful read and a life lesson for us all.

Despite on what the paper reviews tend to indicate the book has
an admirable story indeed but simply written. The formula of the book's
development is very interesting mixing the letters - made on
very diferent styles accordingly to the character persolality-
with the narrative of an suffering miss.
The best part of the whole book is by no question, being
based on a true story. Good reading historically speaking but,
you can find a better one on terms of writting skills.

It took me about one month to finish it, after the few chapters I was thinking to stop reading but after the first half I couldn t stop.

It's a clever story. There are a lot of characters and the plot is not always easy to follow but once I got the idea I couldn t stop reading. Mathilde is not an open book, in fact nobody is, you always wonder what will happen next.

Also my imagination was enhanced with nice landscapes ;)
