“I’d say a parrot screaming ‘No, no, get out’ is pretty suspicious.” In Cedar Chapel, where Victoria Storm runs a senior boardinghouse, things are quiet. That is, until she enters the local pet store and finds Clyde Foster, the owner, dead, and his parrot, Whatzit, frantically screeching. What clues will this bird reveal regarding a murder most foul? Unable to resist a mystery, Victoria, her fiancé, Benjamin, and her senior cohorts begin their own investigation, landing them headfirst in a dangerous adventure. When their friend Miss Aggie disappears, leaving a blood-stained trail, no one seems safe. Will Victoria live long enough to unravel the clues and tie the knot?
FRANCES DEVINE is first a Christian, second a Mom, grandmother and great grandmother. After that, the most important thing in her life is books. Like most authors, she can’t remember a time when she didn’t love to read. And right from the beginning, she was crazy about mysteries. When she was in her sixties, she decided it would be fun to write them and the Miss Aggie series was born. She has also written two historical romance series and several novellas. Frances grew up in Texas and still loves her home state, but when she moved to Missouri in 1984, she fell in love with the changing seasons, the trees and hills. The Misadventures of Miss Aggie series is set in the Missouri Ozarks. Frances loves to hear from her readers at fdevine1(at)gmail.com. She also welcomes comments on her blog .
A cute cozy mystery with heavy relying on God! What a breath of fresh air! This is my first book by this author but one I will rave and rave about. At first, with all the introductions of new people it was hard to catch on to but all the sudden I found myself unable to put it down. I love when that happens. Our main herione, Victoria, runs a boarding house for elderly, most of them being friends of her grandmother, whom has passed. Victoria and her elderly loved ones are once again thrown into a mystery, when Victoria finds the local pet shop owner dead. Did someone kill him or was he murdered? If he was murdered, why and by whom?
All the residents of Cedar Chapel Lodge are very endearing and I really loved the little bit of Whatzit that we got. Wish there would have been more of him! I felt as if there was a part of me, well a BIG part of me in Victoria. She just seemed like one of us, which really helps to meld yourself into the story!
Frances Devine really hit the mark, and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series and hoping there are more in the works!
Title: REST IN PEACE Author: Francis Devine Publisher: Barbour Books April 2011 ISBN: 978-1602603974 Genre: Inspirational/mystery
Victoria Storm is taking her dog, Buster, into the pet store for his shots, but Buster seems hesitate to go in. When Victoria finally lures the dog in, they find the store in disarray, the parrot screeching, and, back in the store room, the owner of the store dead. The police are saying he died by an accident. But the parrot is repeating. “No. Get out.” Could they possibly be the store owner’s last words?
Since the police aren’t considering the pet store a crime scene, Vickie and some of her senior friends (who board with Vickie) decide to go to the shop and look for clues—because to them, the parrot’s words are proof enough of foul play. When searching the place, they find part of the word ‘unnel’ and they believe they are referring to the tunnels found Miss Aggie’s former home.
Miss Aggie and the deceased daughter believe that the murder might be related to a crime that happened years earlier. Could that be true? If so, why were they killing him after so much time passed? And could the senior’s find the real killer before someone else dies?
REST IN PEACE is the first novel I read by Ms. Devine, though I believe this one is the third book in her Misadventure of Miss Aggie Mystery series. So this book stands alone, though the romance that I assumed was introduced in book one was in the final stages of the relationship before the wedding.
Some of the events seemed rather contrived, and it did seem that everyone jumped to conclusions without proof, but all in all, it was a good, quick read and it held my attention. If you are looking for a good cozy mystery, then REST IN PEACE would be a good book to consider. 256 pages. $10.99
Victoria Storm, who owns a boarding house for senior citizens, is once again thrown into a murder investigation when she discovers the body of Clyde Foster, the local pet store owner, in a pool of blood in his store. While searching down clues that seem to involve a World War II jewelry theft, Victoria's life is threatened and one of her seniors, Miss Aggie goes missing. Will they find the murderer in time? Will the 60 year old hidden jewelry finally appear?
Rest in Peace is part of the Hometown Mysteries collection and is the third book featuring Miss Aggie from the Misadventure of Miss Aggie Mystery series.
My Thoughts:
This was a quick read, but I felt it was just an OK book. There were a lot of characters in the book and at times it was hard to keep them all straight. Even though the book seems to tout itself as a murder mystery, it seemed more like the murder was a side plot. Most of the mystery elements in the book involved Miss Aggie's disappearance and the mystery surrounding emeralds stolen from the Jews in World War II. To me the final solution to the murder was very anti-climactic.
I enjoyed reading this book; however, it's not one that I will gush over to my friends. I just feel like the story could have been developed a little more. I was also a little disappointed that this book pretty much told you everything that happened in the first two Miss Aggie books. I would have liked to read those two books, but I feel like I'd be wasting my money now because I know who did it and why.
Victoria was just taking her dog down to the pet shop for his shots; how could she guess that she would find the pet shop owner dead on the floor? Unfortunately, the sheriff wasn’t real understanding about it.
Ms. Levine has set her characters in a boarding house. This makes an unusual group of people to try to solve a murder. She gives everyone their own little quirks and personality attributes which are amusing and in some cases humorous. Ms. Levine throws in a dog, a parrot, and a nine-year-old child into the mix just to keep the action moving and give all of her characters challenges.
This book is one of a series, but it reads well alone. The author gives you enough background on the history of the earlier story to make it seamlessly flow into the new story.
The story flows well, has interesting twists and turns, and Victoria has to deal with the demon “jealousy” during the course of the story. There is a Christian theme to the story, but it doesn’t take away from the mystery of why someone would kill Clyde. The mystery grows when one of the main characters disappears.
There are enough tangled webs in this story to keep your attention and entertain you. The characters grow on you and you find yourself anxious to see what happens to Victoria and her boarding house guests next. It’s a very enjoyable read. I’d like to see more in this series.
Does a good story always have to have romantic elements? Some would argue "yes," because many beloved fictional yarns, ranging from Shakespeare's plays to Star Wars to Twilight contain people being in love. Others would disagree, citing that there are plenty of other much-loved tales that don't contain such content. I'm on the fence; though many good stories have romance(s) in them, sometimes, it can feel tacked on, as was the case with Rest in Peace. Since there appears to be nothing leading up to this story, we have a young adult female protagonist who starts off engaged . The story, as mediocre as it was, could have worked just as well without her even being engaged; not to mention...how many times have we seen a story end with a wedding? Janice Thompson, this writer isn't.
This cozy mystery really hits the spot. Victoria attempts to solve mysteries, run a boardinghouse, and befriend a young confused girl while attempting to make Christian decisions. These remind me of an adult Nancy Drew type mystery but has the added Christian element. While there are a few subplots none of them make the reader feel confused. They all seem to fit together quite nicely. This is a series but can be read alone quite nicely.
I enjoyed the pacing of this read and the subplots kept me interested throughout the novel. I'm not sure why, but I was quite surprised by the "bad" guy and was happy for it. While Victoria had her faults and issues that she struggled with, she still seemed a bit too perfect and could use a bit more depth to her character. I loved all of the "seniors" and the other host of characters. This was definitely a cozy read.
Victoria inherits Cedar Lodge home for seniors from her grandparents. Clyde a local business owner is found dead and Victoria, the seniors at the home and her fiance Benjamin work hard to sort out the mystery of what happened to Clyde. Meanwhile a resident of the home disappears and there is evidence of foul play in regards to her disappearance. The fact that someone does not want to be discovered turns dangerous for Victoria and the senior residents. A novel that kept me guessing and was quite entertaining. I loved the senior residents in the book, they were quite personable and reminds me of my relatives! Great book! Thanks to Barbour Publishing for providing the ARC copy for me for my review.
Rest in Peace by Frances Devine is a cozy Christian Hometown Mystery. It was a very quick pleasant read. I liked the parrot Whatzit and the way the senior citizens from the rest home wanted to get involved every step of the way in the investigation. I recommend this to fans of other cozy mysteries. You won't be disappointed.
I loved this book. From the very beginning it was filled with so much mystery. It also had a touch of romance. It was so good and I am really glad that I read this book.
