Father Vincent has belonged always to that little group [of Distributists] led by G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc who began so many years ago to see and to show that our economic troubles cannot be solved merely by pitting a form of socialism called "Christian" against the obvious evil called Capitalism, that in fact both these systems have so much in common that both are forms of the Servile both must be fought and both replaced by a true Christian and Catholic sociology."Father Vincent McNabb," wrote Chesterton in G.K.'s Weekly, "is one of the few great men of our time. He is a great deal too great to be of our time." In the series of three articles in which these words occur he also describes Father Vincent as being "one of the more drastic and dogmatic of our group." "In every movement," he wrote, "there are disputes; in every movement there is an Extreme Right and an Extreme in every movement there are some uncompromising and some ready for compromise. But in our movement even unworldliness is and the sword of the spirit cuts both ways."- From the Foreword by Masie Ward
The Very Reverend Father Vincent McNabb, O.P., S.T.M. was an Irish scholar and priest based in London where he was active in evangelisation and apologetics.
"Nobody who ever met or saw or heard Father McNabb has ever forgotten him" - G.K. Chesterton
If you have read "The church and the land" by the same author, you'll absolutely love this book. And, even if you haven't, why not give this one a try? One of the many things I like about Mcnabb's writing and exposition style is that he tells you about economy, culture, society and work by taking some passage from the scriptures as a beginning point. His style is not that of economists yet he does better at explaining economy than economists themselves. That sure is because he understands economy as a moral issue, and as that, as a church's issue. The writing style is very enjoyable, very reflexive and to the point. If you have the opportunity to get a copy don't miss it.
