My father was in the US Navy during World War II, spending most of his days on an oil tanker that supplied fuel to destroyers, etc. From age 16 through his Navy years, he kept diaries. In them he recorded every movie he saw and every book he read - a lot! I decided to read some of those books, many no longer in print. Chad Hanna is one of the books, written in 1940. I bought a copy from Amazon. It was published in 1940 and is in excellent condition.
The story is about life in the days before automobiles, electricity, etc. Much simpler times, a little reminiscent of Tom Sawyer if Tom had been a little older. Chad Hanna joins the circus, quite a collection of characters. This is an old fashioned book, but interesting for what it is and for the characters painted by the author. I can imagine my Dad reading it in his hammock until the lights went out for the night.
Very enjoyable. The story of Chad Hanna, who helps an escaped slave further his escape and has to skip town in a hurry. He joins the circus, falls in love and then has to save it and himself from financial ruin. A good tale. Gotta overlook the racist language a bit, but if you can get over that, it's good.
A lovely, so un-american book..beats Twain...Must read. I discovered an army edition in my great grandfather's trunk and read it in fifteen days. I m repeating it. Go out and get hold of this book dear USAites and be proud of USlit..
