Author Rick Armon tours and details 49 breweries and brewpubs and offers information on tours, takeout, food, types of beer brewed at each site and the author's pick of the best beer to try for each brewery. The author also features details on Ohio's beer festivals, Winking Lizard's World Beer Tour, and the Ohio Craft Brewers Association.
Cons: 1/5 - Outdated. - Not comprehensive. - Top beers have changed. After all, it has been five years at the time of this review since publication. (For instance, you won't learn about Columbus Brewing Company's "Bodhi.") - Zilch about Dayton and the Miami Valley area breweries, brewpubs, or taphouses. I realize this book came out shortly before the Dayton area craft beer scene exploded, but a revised edition would be nice.
Pros: 4/5 - Breweries covered range from macros to little known micros. - Inspirational start-up stories for burgeoning homebrewers, potential start-ups, and beer lovers. - Snippets of interviews with owners. - Little known details about the breweries revealed.
My advice: go ahead and read it if you are looking for background information, history, stories, and want a sampling of Ohio's breweries. The stories and interviews make it worth it for that. But don't use it as a travel guide or a comprehensive manual of the Ohio craft beer scene. Instead, go here http://www.ohiocraftbeer.com/breweries/brewerymap.cfm or here http://ohiocraftbeer.org/ and also check out Untappd, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and cities' news and business sites for more information.
Armon's efforts are applaudable, and I realize it's impossible to publish about beer as fast beer changes, but unless he's lost interest, he should definitely update this book.
Very cool book if you are into beer. I have visited quite a few of these breweries and they are all great in their own way. This book is just like a guidebook. Go enjoy what Ohio has to offer but always remember to drink responsibly.
