Wes D. Gehring does a great job breaking down comedy sub genres in all of his books. American Dark Comedy is my favorite by him. The foundation of Screwball Comedy, written much earlier than ADC, is a little more loose in its presentation. I prefer when he’s breaking down films and why they work rather than giving a history lesson on the genre/players itself.

This is still a very good book on Screwball Comedy genre but it reads a little more dense than his others. Recommended for any student of comedy in film.

If you decide to read this book make sure you are familiar with the genres top films from 1930s/1940s.
