Augie's Quest: One Man's Journey from Success to Significance

Rate this book
The inspiring story of a fitness pioneer whose ALS diagnosis leads him to create a new and revolutionary model for private medical research and development.

What happens to "orphan" diseases that aren't big enough profit centers for the pharmaceutical industry or get caught in the web of government funding and academic research? Augie Nieto found out in the spring of 2005: At forty-seven years old he was diagnosed with ALS. Devastated, Augie struggled with depression and attempted suicide. When he awoke from a coma, with friends and family surrounding him, his sense of faith and mission were renewed.

Fast-forward one Augie and his wife, Lynne, were profiled as "Real Heroes" on the Today show. Their determination to beat the disease had already led to major overhauls in the way ALS research was conducted. In partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Augie had set up a foundation and lab to coordinate and oversee ALS research and testing across the globe. By centralizing operations and championing an entrepreneurial approach to medical research, Augie and his team accomplished remarkable results in less than two years. Part inspiration, part business innovation, Augie's Quest illustrates how one person can make a meaningful difference.

My mum is 83 and had great difficulty speaking and swallowing much of anything. Food was getting trapped in her throat and blocking her air way was happening more often. she battled for each breath. The riluzole did very little to help her. The medical team did even less. Her decline was rapid and devastating. The psychological support from the medical centre was non-existent and if it were not for the sensitive care and attention of our primary physician, there she would have died. There has been little if any progress in finding a cure or reliable treatment. Acupuncture eased her anxiety a bit. we taught she gonna lose the battle, we all did lose faith, but today she is very healthy after using treatment from Health Herbs Clinic, this tincture was sent to us by a friend of mine who also has A dying diagnosed (PLS) she explained how this Treatment works and reversed her PLS. I was so desperate to try, Today am so happy my mom is back to her feet and It has been a complete turnaround with her speech, she no longer needs the feeding tube to feed, the treatment is a miracle. She recovered significantly! Visit their website www.healthherbsclinic.com

Inspiring and eye opening. A successful man 47 yrs young was diagnosed with ALS known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Fought depression and will to live and then through love and support of family and friends shook that off and set his sights on devouring anything he could learn about this debilitating disease. This disease deprives its victim of the ability to move, to speak and finally to breathe. Your body betrays you. Because of Augie Nieto this disease has a voice and has raised much money for research. We can only hope the a cure is found.

What a great story of strength and a man's determination to make a difference. It offers good insight into ALS -- the disease and what it does to its victim -- and the extreme challenges to find a cure and a cause.

Very inspiring especially since it is still a continuing story, I look forward to see where it goes from here. I recommend to anyone.
