The Deville Brothers #6

The Devil's Deception

Rate this book

Hiding in plain sight

When your life is destroyed by a faceless villain and the grief cuts so deep it could destroy you, there are two choices. Give up or fight. Lord Montgomery chose the latter. Society sees him as a bumbling fool, but in fact Theo is far from it. With the return of his childhood friend, Lady Iris Challoner, everything suddenly changes. Though he risks exposure, his single focus of revenge has shifted, and the one woman he’d loved has given him something he thought he’d lost long ago. Hope.

Broken but never defeated

Iris Challoner is a survivor. After the only person she’d truly loved walked away from her, numb with grief, she’d allowed her father to marry her to a monster. His death freed her and now she can live her life as she chooses.

Running into Lord Theodore Montgomery during her first foray into London society, Iris is shocked to see the man he’s become. An effeminate fool. Or is he? She once knew Theo better than she knew herself and though she will never forgive him, she is determined to see the real man behind the façade—regardless of the danger it plunges them into.

Can two shattered souls find their way back to the people they once were, or will their past continue to dictate their future?

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Interesting main characters.
(Especially the hero.)

Rather interesting plot.

Some of the funny parts.

The pets.

The friendships between the hero and the other men/heroes from the other books.

Rather good action scenes.

OK romantic build up and chemistry.

➖ What I disliked:

Repetitive.
(Mostly with some words being used in a repetitious way, such as the word shriek….. but also how often almost everyone is described as exceptionally beautiful and handsome.)

Issues were resolved too easily and too quickly.

A little too anachronistic in some parts.

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice.

Yeah, Yeah, I know you hear this a lot but Wendy Vella is one of the authors on my "favorite authors" list. 😊 This is my 28th books by her and I've been reading her since 2016. I just enjoy her writing and stories.

I loved Theo and Iris’s story. I loved that there was suspense and thrills. Such a great couple, great friends and family and a great love story. I hate that this series is over. It was so good. I would definitely recommend this series as well as Wendy Vella and all her books.

When we got the first glimpses of the real man behind “Lord Plunge”, I knew right away that I needed to know more. My heart broke for what Theo had been dealing with for so long. Like her namesake, a hardy plant with delicate flowers, Iris has stood against circumstances that would break lesser people. These childhood best friends were forced apart by Fate, but together they might hold the keys to one another’s futures. I adore every chance I get to visit the author’s regency world. It’s populated with the most outlandish yet loyal and brave characters. (Though, the villains are always appropriately heinous.) The connections of family and friendship that run between them all, inexorably draw me deeper into the story while keeping me highly entertained with their daring wit and sassy snark. Theo and Iris were made for each other and I adored this opportunity to see them come back together to find the Happily Ever After neither thought they’d ever get. I kind of hate that we’ve reached the end of yet another series, but my fingers are crossed that we’ll continue to see these characters make many more hilarious cameo appearances in the future.

Years ago, we met Lord Plunge as a daft numpty, with too many foibles to take seriously. Lady Mary started to reveal his character in an earlier novel, and this book discloses the many facets of Lord Plunge's personality as it introduces Lady Iris, his childhood friend before his life went horribly awry. This book has intrigue, witty exchanges, loathsome villains, and beloved friends in the Devilles and the duchess. You'll enjoy this read!

Masquerading deception, friendship & simmering unfurling romance!
A series I've jumped straight in at the finale and enjoyed every second of the mystery, tummy-swooping-tension-fuelled-suspense, hilarity, good fun and healing-character-shaping romance immensely. And though I haven't yet read what came before, it never once diminished my enjoyment and love for the journey Iris and Theo embarked upon. It only left me wanting nothing more than to find out how it all began and to uncover the Devilles' hard-won stories that led to and helped shape this one.
Vella, never fails to grip you and reel you in with her instantly likable, awe inspiring, sharp-witted, uniquely original, all heart meets teasing sass and playfulness, at their core, characters, as you get to peel back each enticing layer to the sweet, vulnerable and heartmelting warmth beneath. And digging out Theo behind the bumbling, foppish Lord Plunge and beyond the distant coldness of Monty to the protective and touchingly caring tender man beneath became quite the captivating adventure. Especially as Iris attempted to embrace her freedom and grew with a strength and assertiveness that became a million miles away from the caged bird of her past marriage as she fought to protect and raise up her painfully shy and downtrodden son. Together the chemistry radiated and pulled you in with the motivational vengeance Theo sort and balanced it with a fiesty conflicting desire, that rose up in Iris, to defend the friend she once knew as they slowly opened up and explored the deep, connection burning between them.

Making THE DEVIL'S DECEPTION, a truly fun tale that engages a whole spectrum of emotions from happiness and playfulness to a core of sadness, loneliness and pain. At moments, I even had tears trickling down my cheeks, before I even realised how connected I had become.
I just loved how Iris saw through Theo's disguise and questioned his strangely contradicting behavior, coupled with the mirrored pain they have endured after the senseless murder of Theo's parents and the sweet friendship, blissful hope and happy future that was ripped away from these two so young. That plunges them into a riot of conflicting emotions, so delightful in the push and pull confusion, it created upon reunion.
The premise of finding each other again and giving them both the confidence to heal and the strength to move forward to grasp at a happier future, they both so clearly deserved, really had me championing their stubborness to reveal and vanquish the devils that haunted them.
Where - along with her sweet, so heartbreakingly wounded young son, Henry - the three so perfectly matched, slowly burst from their shells, lowered their shields and allowed the false personas that have protected them to minutely crumble.
And the subcharacters, well WOW, Vella just has this way of writing families you want to be a part of, how they cocoon, protect and tease mercilessly those they love, admire and befriend. And the Devilles seem just such a closeknit unit of love, fierce support, mischief and hilarious ribbing, mixed with wholesome meddling, you can't but help falling for each of them in turn immeasurably and wholeheartedly...and I haven't even had the pleasure of reading what came before - an oversight I'm very keen to rectify!
Fab book...another winner of highly recommended proportions...LOVED IT!

Once again, I’m mourning the end of a Vella series, the Deville brothers, and this one isn’t even about one of the Devilles. This is the unexpected story of Lord Plunge, the comic bumbler in the previous books, but as we learned in Book 5 (Unmasked by a Devil), Lord Plunge has been deceiving us all along, working for the King as an undercover agent. The story is dramatic, romantic, and melodramatic all at the same time as Lord Plunge deals with his inner devils and the actual threats to him and his love.
For those who are not familiar with the Deville Brothers series, these are contemporaneous with the Sinclair-Raven series set after the Regency era and before the Victorian era. The Devilles, including their cousin and one of their spouses, are part of a secret group Alexius pledged to protect the British monarch. It was revealed in the last book so is Lord Plunge, as he is called by society who has forgotten his real title is Lord Montgomery. But Lord Montgomery is being forced to leave his disguise behind as he pursues the unsolved mystery of his parents’ murders and encounters his childhood friend Iris, now a widow with a young son.
I loved that all the Deville family members as well as the Raven-Sinclairs are present. The Dutchess of Yardley is magnificent and gets in a surprise of her own. Her fashions I would dearly love to see but, of course, her reading saloon, complete with Cambridge Sinclair reading while balancing on a rolling barrel, is a hoot. No one can write comedy like Wendy Vella.
The scenes I did not like were those where Lord Plunge, now Lord Montgomery, is so intent on protecting Iris, for whom he has developed an adult tendre, that he doesn’t seem to hear her protests as she attempts to establish her own boundaries, something she had not been allowed by her late husband. But all’s well that ends well (and even Shakespeare had issues in that play).

I knew there was so much more to Lord Plunge’s story but Wendy has once again given us a fantastic story and character to love. Lord Plunge walks within the ton playing a fool, but it is all an act. He walks among the ton, acting foolish but is able to hear and see things because he is considered insignificant.

Lord Theodore Montgomery’s only goal is to find and punish the people who killed his parents, and becoming Lord Plunge provides him the perfect persona to do so.

Lord Plunge has kept his true self hidden for years, but when his beloved best friend, Iris from childhood returns into his life and provides information that may assist in finding his parents killers, his well hidden true self starts to emerge.

These childhood friends have both experienced pain, disappointments, and tragedy, but have never forgotten each other and their connection is still strong. Iris has an amazing ability to really see Theo but can she take a chance at loving him?

I adored Theo no matter what part he was playing, Lord Plunge, Monty, Theo, or accepting and becoming Lord Theodore Montgomery again. This book has intrigue, mystery, drama, humor, love and tells an emotional story of the reunion of Iris and Theo. The added bonus of some visits from our favorite Ravens and Sinclairs, Deville Brothers, Lady Mary, and the Duchess of Yardley made for a fantastic story.

Every series that Wendy has gifted us with is amazing. The extended epilogue was the perfect way to wrap up this series, and a most befitting tribute to the Duchess of Yardley! I know I will revisit this book again because it was that good!

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily providing my honest review. I highly recommend you read this entire series!

Finally living his life

I absolutely loved Lord Montgomery (Plunge) story. I have read the series 4 or 5 times waiting for his happily ever after. Theo lost his parents at a young age. Iris was his best friend until he was sent away to Eaton and he never saw her again. When he joined Alexius to find his parents killers and serve his Monarch at the same time he never realized it would take this long to avenge their deaths.
Iris is a widow know, thank goodness. Know she can actually live he life and raise her son with happiness, if her late husbands brother and friends would keep coming around and want to search his private study.
Iris was controlled by her late husband and with the help of her aunt & uncle she has come to London to learn to live again. But when she sees her childhood friend Lord Montgomery and doesn’t understand why everyone calls him Lord Plunge. She see two sides of him and is curious. When Theo hears her ex brother-in-law threaten her and her son he will vow to keep her safe. Iris finds evidence that her late husband might have been involved with her friends parents all those years ago.
Such a wonder story for Theo and finding his happily ever after with Iris.

Wow, what an ending to the Deville series. This is Lord Plunge's story and you discover just who he really is as he hunts for his parents murderer and, discovering his childhood friend, the widowed Lady Challoner, is caught up in it all and is pivotal in him finding out the truth. You will find yourself on an emotional rollercoaster as you see the truth finally revealed and Lord Plunge getting the ending he so deserved. With the Devilles determined to help their friend and show him he doesn't have to do it all alone and with appearances by the Ravens and the Sinclairs, there are some interesting twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout, and the Duchess of Yardley, who would have guessed. Thank you Wendy Vella for yet another fantastic series.

Will the Real Lord Plunge stand up?

This book gives Lord Plunge his own book and I loved it. You will also know that the Deville family has his back no matter what happens and they are friends to him when he’s had no true friends since his parents were murdered at the age of thirteen. When he left his home he also had to leave his childhood friend Iris Challoner, but Iris plays a big part in the book also. Theo has had to pretend to be Lord Plunge and it was a fun part of the story to see him change into Lord Montgomery when he needed to be.
When Theo and Iris connect again years later they are both wanting to find out the answers regarding some mysterious papers Iris was finally able to find in her late husband’s desk. This book has it all, true friendship with the Deville family, a beautiful love interest, a dangerous mystery to solve and one great HEA which Theo and Iris deserved after what they had went through. Definitely another 5 star book from Wendy Vella!

At last the reveal of Lord Plunge. I’m sure many of Wendy’s readers could not believe that such a complete nincompoop was real. He wasn’t and at last we have a chance to see the real ‘Lord Plunge’ and the reasons behind his facade. This is the story of Theo and Iris who were best friends in childhood but were torn apart only to reunited years later. This is a brilliantly written last episode of the Deville’s thrilling but with funny episodes with the crotchety Duchess of Yardley. Totally unputdownable. Loved it

Oh, how I love thee, let me count the ways!

1. The funny
2. The sneaky cleverness and alluring virility
3. The Mama Bear on beast mode
4. The friends who love by getting all up in ya business
5. The obviously colorblind and exceedingly bossy Duchess of Yardly
6. The bad guys get what’s coming to them and the good guys do too (in the best possible way, of course)
7. The HEA
8. Everything in between

Suffice it to say, there's a whole lot to love about this final installment of the Deville Brothers series. It just might be my favorite of the entire series.

I loved this story! The exoneration of Lord Plunge is an exciting story. I'm so glad he's turned out not so silly. Having Iris challenge him to change his public persona is her also helping herself. I'm so glad we haven't seen the last of the wonderful characters that have become family. Wendy Vella is one of my preorder authors as well as her contemporary romances as Lani Blake.

Whew who new Lord Plunge was so multifaceted and complex! Well his childhood friend Iris that’s who! Theo Montgomery has served the crown and Alexis his whole life as an effeminate fool who wore lots of lavender!
Theo is much more dangerous than this and Mary knows just how dangerous he is and can be!
Iris is newly widowed from a cruel and evil man who are a part of Brothers of Faith who just may be the reason Theo parents were murdered!
These can’t possibly have a future with all of this between them!
Wendy has woven a tale of suspense, drama and of course all the previous characters including the Duchess of Yardley who had secrets of her own! I hate for this series to end!
But what a ride! This one might be an all nighter but it will stay with you long after the last page!
Laugh out loud Lord Plunge Aka Theo is my new book boyfriend! Bravo Wendy

It was nice to get to know the real Lord Plunge and she zeroes right in on his disguise, like a true childhood friend can do. Love her feistiness and enjoyed reading how their lives mesh back together again so well after all they've experienced. Love the Deville Brothers they're the type that roll with it, the good and even when things get bad, very supportive. It's a little edgy but that's they way of murder mysteries, heartfelt, a bit steamy and definitely engrossing. I received a free advance copy and voluntarily chose to review.

I have loved The Deville Brothers series. I wasn't sure how Plunge was going to transform into Theo but it was handled beautifully. I loved visiting with all of the characters from the other books and there was adventures, mayhem, angst and love throughout the journey. I can't wait to see what Wendy Vella does next.

Love this series! Rather sad to know this is the last in this series, but with all the cameos from previous series characters in this book I'm confident we haven't seen the last of the Devilles. The author seamlessly includes these characters in a way that if you recognize them you enjoy the inclusion but if you don't know them they are an interesting addition to the story. If you're new to her work I highly encourage you to go to the beginning of any of her series and enjoy. I started with The Langley Sisters and have loved her work ever since.

WONDERFUL READING

The author of this book has blended this story into one of mystery, sadness, and victory, which kept the thoroughly entertained from the first chapter to the end of the book. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Wow!!!

Wendy Vella had me fooled! All this time I thought Lord Plunge was gay! I should have known better with her past books of characters some with special abilities, one dancing and singing on a bar in a unsavory tavern, a Pirate, maybe lol. I'm glad Monte put an end to his childhood nightmare and rejoined his childhood best friend and he's not gay, but his character throughout this series was Hilarious!!! Makes me wonder What's Next!
Happy Reading Everyone

Outstanding story. I hoped and was rewarded with a book about Lord Plunge. I've read all the Deville and Sinclair/Raven series books. This book is the most enjoyable, suspenseful, funny story I have read in a long time. Well done Wendy!

Loved learning the background of Lord "Plunge" and how he was NOT what he seemed to be.

Tragedy forced him into a masquerade, but love brought him normalcy.

Tough to put down these stories once you start, as you try to figure out the villains.

Lord Montgomery has been playing a fool for years. Society mocks and doesn’t pay any attention to him. This gives him the ability to help the king in ways no other can. He has been hunting the man responsible for his parents murder. His old friend from his childhood shows up to give him something he had been searching for years. The sparks that ignite and the danger start immediately. What an excellent story. This was my favorite of this series. I was gifted this book as an arc. This is my honest review.
