This book makes a strong case that our cultural attitude toward helping the poor has deteriorated from the time of the Reformation and the Enlightenment to modernity. The lack of a theological basis for compassion has resulted in a Darwinist approach to poverty and wealth. If Christians are judged by their fruits, and by the record of this book, the Christians of the last 400 years will probably not be happy at the final judgment.
