Stephen Desberg is a Belgian writer of comics. In 2010, he was the 10th bestselling author of comics in France, with 412,000 copies of all his comics together sold that year.
This is the eighth and (thus far) final album in Cinebook's publishing of writer Stephen Desberg and artist Enrico Marini's series The Scorpion (album #10 Au Nom du Fils in the original French), delivering a good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure narrative centred on a religious conspiracy. As the primary arc closes, leaving some threads open for continued adventures to be sure, Desberg and Marini bring everything together, and we finally learn who is the Scorpion's father, and what this actually means.
While the series as a whole has delivered mostly three stars instalments, this album and the preceding one, The Mask of Truth, truly raise the bar, and end the series on a high note.
Even though this appears to be the last there's no ending in English... or at all! This jamboree is still going between 13 and 14- getting more complicated instead of giving any closure.
Finally we get to learn the truth of the Scorpion’s birth and what this means for the families that have held the wealth and power of Rome for centuries.
The Scorpion has been captured by the odious Tiberio and Mejai tries, but fails, to follow. With Hussar injured, the Scorpion must face his fate alone, and yet what he encounters is not what he expected, and he is instead propelled down a different path and headlong into a confrontation with the Trebaldis that will settle the question of his birth once and for all.
What with injuries, political manoeuvring, long-held grudges, leper guards and ever-deperate measures from all sides, this volume cranks up the tension all the way though to the final page. Cleverly crafted by Desberg and with fantastic art by Marini, this is one of comicdom’s greatest books. If you’re not reading it you should be.
"Cosimo Trebaldi. Le Scorpion. Nelio.
One of the best volumes in the whole series, we finally learn the secret of Armando's birth and why Cosimo Trebaldi has been hunting him, wanting him dead since the moment of his birth. I'm curious to see how Armando's story will end...
