March 16, 2019"Where does my insecurity come from, really, & what has it meant to my work & to me as a person? & what do my other shortcomings mean?...Translated into business terms, it's about wide safety margins. I like to say: Those of us in charge may never gamble with the employees' trust, i.e. they...should never have to worry about us risking their jobs. The company should never have to go out without any money...” (pp315-6)
Ingvar Kamprad invited the financial journalist Bertil Torekull to write a book about the conquest of the world by the IKEA empire. It was clear that because Kamprad had been there from the beginning and was still fundamentally involved even after his formal retirement in the late 1980s, that the corporate story of IKEA and the personal story of Kamprad can't really be separated. In fact, Torekull goes further and shows that the two stories don't even make sense when considered separately. As the above quote has it the nature of the company flowed out of the character of the man in both large and small ways .
For instance a distinctive feature of the IKEA universe is that all products have names rather than numbers to identify them. This is because Kamprad is somewhere on the problematic end on the dyslexic and dyscalculia spectrums and so finds names easier to remember than numbers.
More significantly Kamprad was an insecure and fearful man, work was a refuge, workaholism a way to validate himself, alcoholism the only way to wind down from this, and if he didn't develop into a far-right activist in the 1950s it seems it was because he was simply too busy transforming himself from peddling salesman to mail-order magnate to attend the rallies. Max Weber would have loved him for all this as a kindred soul imprisoned in the 'iron cage' of Protestantism and the spirit of Capitalism. Equally we can imagine how the personal problem of feeling insecure and fearful can be a business virtue if it manifests into a desire to value engineer, to be price alert, forever watching the opposition.
Interestingly when the news of his youthful far-right inclinations (his German identifying father and Sudten-German Grandmother were Hitler fans) broke as a scandal in Sweden in the 1990s what hurt him most of all was the entirely false allegation that money lent by far right groups had helped fund IKEA in its early days – endogenous growth was a peculiar pride of Kamprad, the public suggestion that he had borrowed money was quite terrible for him to bear.
Freedom from bank loans is also about security. When one is in debt, one is out of control and in the hands of others. Most of us are comfortable enough with ourselves to be able to accept that – not so Kamprad. As a result IKEA's growth has been endogenous and because of its success, exponential.
The intensity that Kamprad brought to his business naturally determined the company culture. In the early days the company was a giant family concern based on literal and fictive kinship. People would work continuously when they were not sleeping – in part because they were based in the backwoods of rural Sweden and sleeping in the Kamprad farmhouse and outbuildings. Perhaps far-right corporatism was also an influence, but the company was certainly patriarchal in its basic structure. Feminist discourse inclines the mind to think of patriarchy as pejorative in flavour, yet what patriarchy and fictive kinship gave to the growing company was an enormous emotional power, a huge asset that doesn't show up on the balance sheet. By this I don't mean to say that patriarchy is actually sweet to the taste, but rather that it can be very effective, and that is perhaps the basic problem. Kamprad was father, grandfather and in time great grandfather, there were no employees, in spirit and attitude there were only children and grandchildren who through historical and social accident happened to be on a payroll. The presence of the father figure creates the problem of what happens when he is no longer there, how the company adapts, how the inheritance can be divided between his legal and his fictive children.
Success though came about, not through pure strategic vision, but as a result of reactions to immediate problems.
Kamprad started off really peddling goods out of his parents' house, this developed into a mail order business, with his parents helping with the packing and dispatching, from that he decided to concentrate on furniture. Competition was purely on the basis of price, the cheapest goods were of the poorest quality, and Kamprad was getting an increasing number of complaints. The solution was to buy a shop to act as a showroom and allow the customers to purchase on the basis of quality instead. That first store was bought in 1958. Being based out in the backwoods they had to provide coffee and buns to lure the punters in– the reader can see the roots here of IKEA as a total shopping experience, self-sufficient, a complete destination in itself.
That first store had all the corners of a conventional building, it was only in planning the second IKEA store, which opened in 1965, that the familiar features emerged: circular design (inspired by a visit to the Guggenheim Museum, ) children's play pit, mid-store restaurant, and post check-out snack bar .
Similarly in the competitive world of Swedish 1960s mail order catalogues and furniture stores IKEA was pushed into finding suppliers in Communist Poland because the threat of boycotts from other more established furniture sellers meant that IKEA could not secure a Swedish supply chain. But this development has its own logic. As Poland becomes a consumer of IKEA goods, then IKEA must purchase from even cheaper suppliers. It follows here than the company's growth has been exponential because it had to be. The more it grows the more it must grow.
Equally IKEA from the start has targeted the mass market with a combination of low prices and high quality. Therefore China is a more significant market than Japan – China in Kamprad's world vision needs IKEA in a way that Japan does not.
It also follows that no backwoods Swedish company today could become an IKEA – that ecological niche is already occupied, and increasingly not just in Sweden but in a host of other countries too. IKEA's competitive advantage is simply too great. Anybody attempting to repeat IKEA's method would need access to enormous amounts of credit – which rather proves the point, since IKEA's growth was funded not by banks but from the companies profits. Here too the author has to pay tribute to IKEA's emergence at a time of prolonged economic growth – perhaps the happiest time in European history – the post war period down to the end 1970s when a social democratic consensus saw improving living standards for the broad mass of the population across Europe. IKEA's competitive advantage is not just in low cost production, but also in tax avoidance .
In common, I suppose with all of us, Kamprad and IKEA have some interesting blind spots that come out during the book. One is around women in senior management positions and the other around child labour. In both cases Kamprad and IKEA can't see how they contribute to the problem. Kamprad has had no problem realising that if he wants to provide cheap, high quality goods that he needs to manage the company to achieve those goals, but the idea that if you want a particular outcome that you have to deliberately work towards it doesn't occur to him when it comes to his wish to have a woman running the company. Equally Kamprad and IKEA are keen to engage with companies that use child labour, but are blind to the idea that child labour is a reasonable market response to a large international manufacturer's desire for cheaper and cheaper products, particularly since IKEA is geared to meeting demand amongst those whose needs, in Kamprad's view, are greatest - ie those with the least means. Not that all IKEA products are made by children in the far east, while elderly Scandinavian wipe a tear from their eyes remembering how as children they clambered around the farm yard gathering eggs assuming some cosy equivalence between a family and an industrial mode of production, many goods are made in factories in which IKEA has invested heavily over the long term to create a highly mechanised manufacturing facilities which are still competitive in the world market, even when located in high cost countries like Sweden itself.
Torekull is keen to suggest the importance of the Smalland environment to IKEA and Kamprad's way of doing business. Certainly it is clear from the narrative that he benefited from his family network. Torekull's poetic take on IKEA and Kamprad rising out of the moraine – thriftiness as an adaptation to a hard landscape - is an interesting one and in this the IKEA story reminds me of the Walmart story – a company found in rural Missouri during the depression of 1930s, hard places can make for resourceful people. On the other hand don't look to that as part of the recipe for success. Many companies and people come from similarly testing backgrounds and they never get out of it.
Reading this book I had a revelation. Not perhaps the most exciting one, but finding out that Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, had run a mail order business I suddenly understood that an IKEA store is simply a physical mail order catalogue that you walk though, order sheet in hand, with the feet doing what the fingers did. And that alone gave me my book based happiness!

Я можу помилятися, але здається про бренд IKEA я дізналася вперше, коли вчилася в університеті: читали текст про компанію на уроці англійської. Шведська компанія меблів за бюджетними цінами та скромний мільярдер Інґвар Кампрад, що не розкидається грошима, тоді справді зацікавили мене. Пізніше я дізнаюся про те, що Кампрад свого часу підтримував зв’язки зі шведськими нацистами, і постать засновника IKEA заінтригує ще більше.
👉Скажу одразу: змушувала себе дочитувати
Трохи дивна то була ідея – поєднати в книзі такий різний подачу інформації – автора і самого засновника бренду. Іноді це були доповнення, але частіше повтори чи самоповтори. При цьому неочікувано для себе зробила висновок, що більше мені подобається читати історію саме від імені Кампрада, а не журналіста, якому запропонували написати цю книгу. Річ у тім, що з перших глав помічаєш дивний стиль письма: наче не біографію бренду писав, а художню книгу. Не схоже було на ґрунтовне дослідження. Водночас деякі глави скидалися на переобтяжений реферат, де повторами, пунктами, зайвою інформацією наче наганяється об’єм.
Друга річ, яка одразу збентежила, занадто компліментарний тон Бертіла Торекула. Наприклад, «ІКЕА» була потрібна засобам масової інформації як приклад ідеальної компанії, а Кампрад – легендарної людини, яка почала з нічого і завоювала увесь світ» (лизнув, так лизнув). Або «Як бачите, слабкі місця мають усі – навіть легенди…», - тон, який не личить відстороненому спостерігачеві, що претендує на об’єктивність. Це тому книга має доволі низький, як для біографі�� бренду, рейтинг на goodreads?
Та якщо треба назвати річ, яка мене вразила, то це структура власності компанії на сьогодні, що формувалася, змінювалася та розгалужувалася протягом десятиліть, адже Кампрад почав задумуватися, як вберегти компанію від потенційних майбутніх чвар своїх спадкоємців ще у 70-х роках минулого століття(!) І схоже таки зміг придумати, як і дати синам реалізуватися, та водночас не дати їм такої влади, щоб зруйнувати своє дітище.
👉Нацистський скелет в шафі ІКЕА
Зізнаюся, що найбільше у цій книзі мені цікаво було знайти відповідь на питання: як поєднується Кампрад–засновник всесвітньо відомого успішного бренду та Кампрад-прибічник нацизму? Та вже на початку книги інтрига руйнується, бо автор одразу розповідає…про німецьке походження бабусі і дідуся Інґвара, які виїхали і поселилися в Швеції. Натомість бабуся Франциска мала родичів в Судетах і все нарікала, як важко їм живеться після того, як цей регіон відійшов Чехословаччині, регулярно надсилала їм допомогу і, звісно, раділа, коли Гітлер анексував Судети. Батько Інґвара, як останній потім сам напише, був антисемітом. От в такій родині і виховувався хлопчик.
Питання дружби з неонацистом Пером Енґдалем (коректорка дозволила йому бути у книзі і «Ендґалем») потім буде розкрито в книзі більш детально, а також скандали в ЗМІ, які виникнуть, коли ця інформація (і не тільки) вийде на яв. Кампрад обере стратегію прозорості, обираючи розповісти відверто правду, що не одразу, та все ж почне гасити роздмухане полум’я репутаційної катастрофи (деякі журналісти навіть писали, що ІКЕА була створена на нацистські гроші). Ось так навіть через багато років люди несуть відповідальність за юнацькі помилки. А ми, в свою чергу, маємо цікавий комунікаційний кейс, яким рідко користуються в бізнесі.

Історія IKEA - це історія того, як один неосвічений (за все життя не прочитав жодної книги) алкоголік, вихований дідом-антисемітом та бабунею, що захоплювалася Гітлером, змінив споживацький світ
І якщо ви думаєте, що я зараз десь схибила чи перегнула палку, то навіть не сподівайтеся. Все це й навіть більше мало місце у житті Інгвара Кампрада, батька й творця IKEA, який звісно що був набагато більше, аніж просто неосвіченим алкоголіком, якому його націстькофілійна молодість тричі вилазила боком і нагадувала про себе шкандалями по всьому світу.
У принципі, книгу можна було закінчувати вже після згадки про його перші зароблені гроші. Інгвару було 5 (прописом: п'ять) років, коли він куплені гуртом сірники продав родичам поштучно і таким чином заробив утричі більше, аніж витратив на коробок. Все. Коли п'ятирічна дитина примудряється заробити на сірниках, то сумнивів, що з неї виросте явно не доктор філософії, навіть не виникає.
Але книгу на цьому не закінчили, а тільки почали і це добре. Бо далі було ще цікавіше. Про "торгуйся або вмри", про те, чому в меблів в IKEA виключно назви, а не артикули із цифрами, про те, як IKEA взагалі стала саме ікеєю з великих літер, і що було спочатку, і чому пощастило Польщі. Про те, як компанія, що продавала товари поштою, перетворилась на компанію, де керує правило десяти хотдогів та басейна із пластиковими кульками, і що таке "випробування індичкою", і чому про рашу Інгвар казав "ніколи знову!", але його зуміли вмовити зробити це ще раз.
Цінність таких книг - саме у історії. Історії компанії, історії її творця та навіть історії Европи (наприклад, із подивом прочитала про самий-самий початок компанії, коли сам Інгвар із дружиною та другом ночами ледь встигали різати тканину на дивани, адже їх розмітали із шаленою швидкістю, і все б було нічого, але це було у самий розпал Другої світової. Якось мені у голові не зразу це склалося - навколо війна, а в них дивани скуповують як в останній раз О_о).

Про те, як компанія, що продавала товари поштою, перетворилась на компанію, де керує правило десяти хотдогів та басейна із пластиковими кульками, і що таке "випробування індичкою", і чому про рашу Інгвар казав "ніколи знову!", але його зуміли вмовити зробити це ще раз.
Цінність таких книг - саме у історії. Історії компанії, історії її творця та навіть історії Европи (наприклад, із подивом прочитала про самий-самий початок компанії, коли сам Інгвар із дружиною та другом ночами ледь встигали різати тканину на дивани, адже їх розмітали із шаленою швидкістю, і все б було нічого, але це було у самий розпал Другої світової. Якось мені у голові не зразу це склалося - навколо війна, а в них дивани скуповують як в останній раз О_о).

I picked up this book up while shopping at IKEA one day because I wanted to know the story of how the store came to be such a successful globally recognised brand. It is mostly a biography on IKEA's founder Ingvar Kamprad and also talks about how IKEA started but doesn't provide many actionable business lessons for entrepreneurs. The best part of the book was the appendix where a copy of IKEA's manifesto "The Testament of a Furniture Dealer" is included for the reader. You can also find the manifesto on the web if you'd rather skip the story and get down to their philosophy as a business. From reading this you get the sense that it is the ongoing passion of the founder that has propelled the business to such heights: at age 88 he's still there as a senior advisor with no intent to retire.

💡Історія успіху всесвітньо відомої компанії чи біографія її засновника? У книзі є і те, і інше, однак Інґвара Кампрада та його історії на сторінках все ж більше (і це він сам зауважив). Його відданість справі мотивує (він міг прийти в офіс о 6 ранку, до певного моменту знав найменування всіх товарів), його практичність та впертість надихає (постійно порівнював ціни із іншими магазинами, літав лише економ класами, часто подорожував на потязі), а любов до людей подекуди дивує та бентежить (оці постійні обійми та рукостискання…ну не знаю…). Але саме завдяки Інґвару ІКЕА стала такою, якою ми знаємо її сьогодні.
✔️Цінна порада від засновника: «Десять хвилин — це не просто одна шоста вашої погодинної платні. Десять хвилин — це частина вас самих. Розділіть життя на десятихвилинні відрізки й витрачайте якомога менше з них на безглузді заняття».⌚⌚⌚
💡Тепер хочу прочитати інші книги із серії «Історії успіху» видавництва «Наш Формат». 💡А ще цікаво було б через років 10 побачити книгу про ІКЕА без Інґвара Кампрада (він помер у 91-віці у січні цього року і тепер компанію чекає багато нових викликів). 📌Ну і з нетерпінням чекаю офіційних магазинів в Україні❤️

Когда Ингвар начинал предпринимательскую деятельность, бабушка Ингвара всегда первая покупала у него его товары (хотя ей они не совсем были нужны) - это вселяло в него уверенность и давало толчок к дальнейшим шагам в бизнесе.
Еще Ингвар создал суперсложную юр структуру, которая позволит развиваться дальше в том направлении, в котором он хотел, молодец мужик.
Местами скучновато.

The story and book itself is quite useful - I hope I learned a thing or two from it. From the other side, the more author tried to whiten the protagonist, the more I disliked both of them. But, ultimately, you don’t need to believe in their sincerity or like them as people or businessman. It is a sort of a small window into their world and the world is worth glancing at.

Very disappointing book. Part of it may be attributed to the translation, the majority of it is the content. Despite having access to the founder (in fact requested by the founder to write this book) and other key people in the firms, the book still lack lots of insights and thoughts, compared to other books of the genre. The writing is not that nice, perhaps due to the translation. The author is a Swedish journalist and this is his only book. Don't waste your time with this book.

Я дуже люблю ІКЕЮ і досить часто з сім’єю туди їдем щось купити.
Я живу в Швейцарії і виявилося, що саме в Обоні за Лозаною, тому самому відділені, куди я їжджу, Інгвар працював і мав свій кабінет і жив в Лозанні багато років.
Цікаво біло дізнатися, що він був фашистом і мав проблеми з алкоголем - я тепер це пам’ятатиму кожного разу, коли згадуватиму про ІКЕЮ :)
На серйозній ноті - дуже цікаво було дізнатися про бізнес модель, історію і почути завіт торговця меблями.
Я живу в Швейцарії і виявилося, що саме в Обоні за Лозаною, тому самому відділені, куди я їжджу, Інгвар працював і мав свій кабінет і жив в Лозанні багато років.

This book has been hard to get through -- despite my love for all things IKEA. It feels like part of the issue is the translation from Swedish. I wanted to get deeper feelings and insight into how things happened because as organic as it seems, I think there was more substance and strategy.

Загалом: Рекомендую.
Цю книгу мені подарувала дружина на день народження. Дякую тобі, Оленко. Книга мені сподобалася і я рекомендую її до читання усім кому цікаве підприємництво та особистісній розвиток. ЗАУВАЖУ! Книгу варто читати Українською мовою від видавництва Наш Формат, бо це переклад останньої версії книги від 2011 року, доповненої авторами книги. А російський переклад ґрунтується на старій версії книги від 1998 року, тому там є вже застарілі відомості. Я читав російською, бо не знав про це.
На читання цієї книги мене наштовхнула цікавість до історії створення та розвитку компаній, зростання підприємців, як особистостей та сам досвід автора і компанії, який передається при розповіді про свою компанію.
Це історія-розповідь про "ІКЕА" від засновника компанії та письменника публіциста, яка частково створена на випередження і про це писав сам автор: Якщо ми не напишемо книгу самі про себе, то хтось інший напише книгу про нас, яка може стати нам не до вподоби. Отож вони вирішили написати книгу так, щоб і цікавість широкого загалу вдовольнити і показати історію бізнесу у правильному світлі. Як на мене із задачею впоралися добре. В книзі є чимало вихвалянь себе як компанії і співробітників і оточення, але є і критичні думки. Звісно, критичні думки показані дуже обережно, лише так, щоб позначити їх наявність. Гадаю, що саме таким чином зробила б кожна компанія.
В книзі показана історія того, як хлопчисько з ферми створив міжнародну величезну компанію. Ні, це не бідний хлопчик жебрак, але не багатій. Це старанна, дуже вперта, винахідна та енергійна людина яка мріяла про майбутнє і одночасно була безжалісно ощадливою. Ця людина створила дорогу в майбутнє.
«Ця людина поставила перед собою ЦІЛЬ: подарувати безсмертя тій компанії, яку створила». І наразі все йде добре.
В книзі є і цікаві рішення, і частина філософії засновника, і ставлення до дітей. Багато чого життєвого є у цій розповіді.
В додатках книги є розділ «Завіт торгівця меблями». Не дивлячись на те, що це річ яка в очах Інгвара претендує сперечатися із Біблією, в ній є надзвичайно слушні думки. Одна з думок: «Марнотратство обходиться нам дуже дорого, особливо в речах буденних: реєстрація документів, які вам ніколи не знадобляться; пуста втрата часу на доведення своєї беззаперечної правоти, відкладення рішення до наступної зустрічі, тільки тому, що зараз ви не хочете брати на себе відповідальність, телефонний дзвінок, коли можна було б написати листа». Тобто заощадливість, це не лише про вартість товарів, а про сам підхід до життя. Цей підхід до заощадливості мабуть має ключову роль у діяльності компанії і у діяльності самого засновника. Проте часом це виглядає як сектантство.
«ІКЕА гірше аніж будь яка секта» - Йоран Карстед, керівник північно американської організації "ІКЕА". Читаючи цю книгу я нерідко зустрічав фрази та посили, що засновник компанії наче пророк, а його правила це Біблія для співробітників. Це часто відчувалось на сторінках книги і це мене дуже дратувало. Але можливо завдяки цій ідеології компанія змогла реалізувати такі амбітні плани. Цікаво, що одним із засмучень Інгвара Кампрада стало обмеження тривалості робочого дня для співробітників на законодавчому рівні. Хоча вони й обходили це обмеження проте вони звертали на це увагу. Можливо завдяки своїй ідеології він зміг переконати так багато людей працювати значно більше ніж в середньому по ринку. Мені не відомо, чи досягли співробітники своєї мети, проте Інгвар своєї мети досяг.
Цікаво було прочитати про розвіювання міфу, що засновник все життя їздив на старенькому Volvo. Саме так розповідають про нього в популярних статтях. Проте до того, він їздив і на Porshe і на інших автівках.
Але, що дуже сподобалося, так це підхід у компанії до проблем: «Ділова філософія "ІКЕА" визначається одним золотим правилом: Стався до будь якої проблеми, як до нової можливості. Проблеми створюють нові приголомшливі шанси». Читаючи про ті моменти, які вирішували в "ІКЕА" згадується вислів «На кривих коріннях дерева міцніше стоять». Так і "ІКЕА" пробиваючись скрізь складнощі зросла до величі.
«Шановний вам ніколи не стати бізнесменом», сказав якось один підприємець молодому Інгвару, через те, що той не торгувався далі. Цей урок Інгвар запам’ятав на все життя. І таки став успішним підприємцем)

Not strictly “read” in its entirety. And I’d not really recommend it. And, if you read on, you’ll see a suggestion of who might be able to, in a literary sense, unbox and assemble a better version of the tale of IKEA. This one felt a bit...flat packed.
I bought this book second hand out of curiosity. IKEA is so globally potent and present as a brand, we own a bunch of IKEA stuff from bookcases to knives and forks. And their system - marketing, manufacturing, distribution, point of sale, pricing - invites curiosity.
It’s a strange read. The author was close to the source, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad. It’s full of information. The story is remarkable - a kid selling pens becomes a 50 billion international magnate.
Somehow it just doesn’t tick the boxes. Perhaps it’s because it is a translation from the original Swedish. Maybe old mate just isn’t a great writer.
It comes with an IKEA code on the back cover (like ALL their products have), and although the author claims total transparency and complete freedom to research and write whatever he wanted, he has moments of flattery that embarrassingly gush in Kamprad’s - and IKEA’s - direction. It all feels to me a little like the first audience this is written to and for is Kamprad and IKEA, not the reader.
I was interested in the facts of Kamprad’s entrepreneurial spirit, his Nazi sympathies (as a teen) and some of the business ethos that drove - and still drives - the IKEA juggernaut.
But at about the halfway point I felt the most potentially interesting bits were done. I dipped in and out from there. It all started to feel a tad corporate to me, even thought a fair amount of the book is Kamprad speaking in first person.
But it all comes out a bit benign, a bit like a giant annual report. I can’t say I ever really come to admire Kamprad. From beginning up to as far as I got, he just “is”.
I’ll read Peter Fitzsimon’s account of IKEA if he ever writes one - we need a little more swearing at the instructions, a little more queueing at the cash registers, a bit more literary cursing as you try to find the missing nutty-bolty bit, a bit of fiery flat-packed hell.
I think, in the end, this book is a strong case for IKEA: THE UNAUTHORISED STORY...
And I really shouldn’t have taken so long to write so much about such a benign read...
I bought this book second hand out of curiosity. IKEA is so globally potent and present as a brand, we own a bunch of IKEA stuff from bookcases to knives and forks. And their system - marketing, manufacturing, distribution, point of sale, pricing - invites curiosity.
It’s a strange read. The author was close to the source, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad. It’s full of information. The story is remarkable - a kid selling pens becomes a 50 billion international magnate.
Somehow it just doesn’t tick the boxes. Perhaps it’s because it is a translation from the original Swedish. Maybe old mate just isn’t a great writer.
It comes with an IKEA code on the back cover (like ALL their products have), and although the author claims total transparency and complete freedom to research and write whatever he wanted, he has moments of flattery that embarrassingly gush in Kamprad’s - and IKEA’s - direction. It all feels to me a little like the first audience this is written to and for is Kamprad and IKEA, not the reader.

After purchasing our first house, my wife and I ended up going to IKEA multiple times to purchase furniture that was both to our liking and within our budget. After a couple of times, I noticed this book for sale and decided to pick it up to learn more about this company that we have developed a mild sense of loyalty to.
After reading this book, I can definitely say I learned quite a bit about the history of IKEA. The first third of the book started off quite strong as the author went through the early stages of Ingvar Kamprad's life, the founder of IKEA. It was interesting to see how Ingvar's upbringing led to the transformation of an adolescent buying and selling simple everyday items to the founder of a regional business.
Throughout the rest of the book, there was still a lot to learn about this international corporation. However, as the historical accounts of IKEA started develop relationships and business outside of the borders of Sweden, the book started to move away from being a biography to more of a hodgepodge of what felt like a collection of magazine articles about IKEA.
As I progressed further and further into the book, the sense of objective history faded away and story felt more like a propaganda piece to explain the different choices that the head of IKEA had made throughout the years.
In the end, I got the impression that Ingvard Kamprad has quite a good overall sense for business and a dedication to frugality. However, one thing that stood out to me was his role as the "father" of the company and his employees. While having a centralized autocratic style of leadership can keep the entire company on the same page and moving in one direction as a whole, I am wary of "father" figures in the work place or in social settings after some personal experiences.
This book neither deters nor encourages me to buy more products from IKEA. There were some things in the book that appealed to me while other aspects were not much to my liking. In the end, I have a better understanding of the company. I shop at IKEA because I like the IKEA experience, the Swedish Meatballs, Nordic water, the fair prices, and building my own furniture.

This is an almost fairy-tale-like story of IKEA’s rise, while reading, you feel as though you’ve become part of the company "family." This book is far from a dry business textbook or a branding manual. On the contrary, the brand’s history is told as if it were the story of a living, breathing person. There is a profound truth in this: no matter how hard Ingvar Kamprad tried to build an immortal, autonomous organization, IKEA loses its true identity without him.
A significant portion of the narrative is dedicated to the founder’s biography. This is entirely justified, as Kamprad is IKEA, without understanding his personality, one cannot grasp the nuances and milestones of the empire’s development. Given how much effort Kamprad personally invested in entering the Russian market, I doubt he would have allowed such an outcome.

IKEA - одна из моих любимых компаний, мне нравится то, что они делают и как (скажем честно, я их фанат). От книги не стоит ждать увлекательного сюжета или каких-то шокирующих сенсаций, а местами, пожалуй, чересчур слащаво. Однако узнав больше об основателе компании, его взглядах на бизнес и жизнь, о концепции и правилах внутри компании, я все же стала уважать IKEA чуть больше.
"Разбазаривание ресурсов – это смертный грех в ИКЕА. Трудно назвать искусством достижение целей без учета расходов. Любой дизайнер может спроектировать стол, который будет стоить 5000 крон. Но только высококвалифицированный специалист может создать красивый и функциональный стол, который будет стоить 100 крон. Дорогостоящие решения любой проблемы обычно предлагают посредственности.
Мы не можем высказывать свое отношение к проекту, пока нам не известна его стоимость. Изделие ИКЕА без ценника – это в корне неверно! С такой же неправильной ситуацией мы сталкиваемся, когда правительство не сообщает налогоплательщикам, сколько стоит порция «бесплатного» школьного завтрака.
Прежде чем выбрать решение, определите его стоимость. Только после этого вы можете судить о его ценности."

Сама історія компанії захоплива і її засновник - видатна особистість. Але не дуже сподобався сам стиль книги, не було відчуття захоплення від читання.

Tyvärr får den här boken bara två stjärnor, trots att IKEA själv får fem stjärnor alla dagar i veckan. Början av boken (kanske 1/4 eller 1/3 av boken) var intressant men sen började det bli lite för utdraget och långrandigt. En del av boken var alldeles för ursäktande och tjatig. Hade hoppats på att få veta mer om IKEA (typ hur de kommer på de olika namnen, fakta och statistik, roliga anekdoter osv) men boken innehöll så otroligt mycket Ingvars bakgrund och historia, vilket jag inte var särskilt intresserad av.
Som tur lyssnade jag på boken, eftersom om jag skulle ha läst den skulle jag nog ha haft svårt att orka mig igenom hela. Rekommenderar därför att besöka ett IKEA varuhus, känna in miljön och sitta på de billiga men hållbara stolarna, se på de härliga färgkombinationerna och äta de goda och prisvärda köttbullarna - det kommer ge dig mycket mer än att läsa denna bok.
Som tur lyssnade jag på boken, eftersom om jag skulle ha läst den skulle jag nog ha haft svårt att orka mig igenom hela. I've read a lot of these. It was a good book, you can't deny the success of IKEA. A lot of behind the scenes and details about the merchandising, product development and purchasing. But the author could have provided more details. Honestly, the Swedish-English translation probably doesn't do it justice. And then there is the whole nazi affiliations. It probably happened but by denying it, it probably makes it look worse. I am as anti-fascist, anti-genocide as they come but I think that you have to accept what happened and move on. They opened 7 IKEA stores in Israel. It doesn't make it right but it is what it is.

Чудова й надихаюча історія!
Але вона не про ІКЕА, вона про Інгвара Кампрада - батька ІКЕА. Вона описує й пояснює якою людиною він був, його негаразди та переживання, його сповідь і його філософія. Книга оповідає про цінності, сформовані його досвідом, про заповіді, покладені в основу в "Завіт торговця меблями" - це все той шлях ІКЕА, який змінює світ на краще.
Все хотілося б трошки більше саме промислових подробиць - саме і як саме вони зробили не так як інші, що стали однією з найефективніших та найзгуртованіших компаній світу.
А так-то Інгвар красавчік!

Книга про Кампрада та ІКЕА. Чесно кажучи, більше питань до книги, ніж відповідей. Одна з тих самих "мотивуючих" книжок про великих особистостей, після яких дивишся на світ із все більшим скептицизмом.
В якийсь момент мене просто нудило. Скромний дядько, який мав дві однакові Порше, купив виноградник і доживав життя в Швейцарії.
Ми всі сім'я, але ви маєте працювати 24/7. Для мене гроші не важливі, але я хочу платити найнижчі податки.
Дуже багато протирічь, хоча я й жодним чином не применшую розмір і вплив ІКЕА, принаймні, в Європі.
В якийсь момент мене просто нудило. Скромний дядько, який мав дві однакові Порше, купив виноградник і доживав життя в Швейцарії.
Ми всі сім'я, але ви маєте працювати 24/7. Для мене гроші не важливі, але я хочу платити найнижчі податки.

Незважаючи на мою цікавість до цієї теми, до кінця книгу я дочитала тільки через те, що не звикла лишати книги на півдорозі. Вона вийшла пласкою, трохи схожою на рекламний буклет. Мабуть так і було задумано, адже книга вийшла зі згоди засновника IKEA, але замаскувати це авторові таланту не вистачило.

А ще шкода, що друкована книга - це не щось динамічне. Хоча Кампрад помер у 2018-ому, історія все одно зводить до того, що ж буде з компанією після його смерті. І ні слова про те, як же все ж таки далі працює. Ну і цікаво було б дізнатися про нинішню ситуацію із виходом з російського ринку, адже про прихід туди є цілий розділ.
