Adrian's Undead Diary #2

ALONE NO MORE: ADRIAN'S UNDEAD DIARY BOOK TWO

Rate this book
Realizing you have a surviving neighbor after the world is overtaken by the undead isn't always a good thing.

Unless that neighbor is the grumpy, armed and retired Green Beret Gilbert Donohue. In that case, finding out you've got a neighbor is a lot like hitting the proverbial jackpot. Adrian's piecemeal life on campus since "That Day" has been a struggle. Retrieving supplies from local neighborhoods filled with the walking dead has been dangerous for him, but he's stayed alive by being a little smarter than the other survivors, and a lot faster than the roaming, hungry zombies that have overtaken his home town, and the world.

In Alone No More, the second installment in the smash hit series Adrian's Undead Diary, Adrian's life is poised to become even more complicated and dangerous when some familiar faces find their way to ALPA with some less than friendly folks on their tail. For the first time the breadth of Adrian's Apocalypse widens to reveal the death of one of the oldest cities of mankind in one of the most popular of all the AUD short stories: Jerusalem.

Sometimes in the cold of winter, the only thing can keep you warm is freshly spilled blood.

ABR's full Alone No More (Adrian’s Undead Diary Book 2) audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

It has taken me way too long to get back to the simple world that Chris Philbrook has created for Adrian. By simple I mean pretty straight forward as far as a zombie apocalypse is concerned.

Beware that this is book 2 in a series, so it might do you some good to listen to the first book first. Even thought I believe that Alone No More can stand by itself if need be.

At first I was taken aback, because this book started in the past. With things that we did not know about from book one. I had to double check that I was listening to the correct audiobook. After this initial shock I found myself getting wrapped up in the added story lines.

If you thought that Dark Recollections was missing the back story of Adrian, you will be pleased to know that Alone No More will quench some of that thirst. Not only with Adrian’s story but the story of several other interesting characters.

I did find it quite oxymoronic that the title is Alone no More and Adrian was alone for the majority of this story. However when people started showing up in his life again the crap hits the fan. As we all know the most dangerous things in the zombie apocalypse are the other survivors.

Philbrook ended the book at the perfect point to make you need to listen to the next in the series, something that I will be doing soon.

James Foster is simply amazing in this series. There is something magical that happens with his performance when he is Adrian talking, I mean writing, in his journal. True chemistry, he creates a real conventionality, a sincere joviality at times and disparity at others.

Now I am not sure how these two got connected, more than likely random fate or coincidence. I will choose fate because an author needs a stellar narrator to bring his vision to light. Even though Foster is a relative newcomer to the narration world, I can not think of another that would give the listener the same experience.

Alone No More (Adrian's Undead Diary, Book 2) by Chris Philbrook
Began read, 4.25.2014. Completed, 4.26.2014

After completing the first book in this series, I was ready to keep reading about Adrian and his post apocalyptic adventures. The title indicated he was going to meet some real living people and I wondered who they might be.

I was not disappointed in the story. Adrian had some scary and uplifting adventures in this book. Don't want to give any thing away, but I think it's worth reading if you found the first book interesting and want to continue in Adrian's world for a bit longer. One does need to read the first book prior to this book.

I like the way Chris writes. His descriptions of activities highlight needed words that help to bring me into the story. He introduces a wide range of characters in this book. I can see and hear them based on his wonderful descriptions. As in the first book, the sadder stories are heart felt and add a lot of depth to the story.

However, Chris needs better editing. Maybe a couple of internet friends would be willing to give his books a shot (prior to publication) and help him with his grammar issues. Objective and subjective cases are not interchangeable. Paraphrasing here (from the book)... driving up to Staci and I's house... I see no excuse for publishing a statement like that. Chris is simply too good of a creative writer to be making this sort of mistake. A lot of words added to sentences that should not be there, (example only, not from book): I tried not to fall to down the steps to the kitchen... Honestly, I see this in a lot of books, recently even a Shirley Jackson classic. I know I do this sort of thing all the time...but then again, I'm not a professional writer.

The story stopped at 97% of the book. That's not too bad and I understand wanting to make money and introduce another book...I've seen much worse. It's just that well, I borrowed the first book from amazon prime library. Then 3.99 for the second book. Now the publishing company wants 4.99 for the 3rd book?? When does this end...These books are good, but I read fast and need some of my hard earned money for some other reads, also.

I'm sure I will break down today and order the next book. The story is interesting and I am interested to see if the poor editing improves. Chris, if you are reading this, I would be happy to read any future books in this series to help out with the editing. You are a very talented creative writer.

I recommend this book for those of us enjoying a good story.

ADDENDUM: As mentioned about, the 3rd book in the series is 4.99. More than the others. However, the book is over 400 pages. So maybe that is the reason for the increased price. I hope it's not packed full of “examples” of other books at the end. Guess I'll purchase it and find out!!

Book 2 of Adrians Undead Diary delivers as big a punch as its predecessor. Alone No More begins with more back story of several other characters individual experience (and subsequent demise) during the initial outbreak. Chris Philbrook does an excellent job of toggling between those vignettes and Mr. Journal. Once again, I found myself laughing out loud to Adrian's snarky entries into his trusted diary.

Philbrook tells the story of the schools female soccer team as their Coach is bitten and heroically tells the girls to leave him. The team locked themselves in a dorm room to discover one of them has been bitten. The conclusion of that arc left me with chills and I did a mental golf clap and tipped my proverbial hat to Chris for his ingenuity.

Another vignette shows us the state of the Emergency Room when things begin to fall apart.
Little nuances of the workings of an ER, and accurate terminology, left me questioning if the author has had some experience in a hospital setting. His descriptions, down to the minutia of details were spot on. So, I asked him if he pulled from personal experience or relied on research for these details.
"I currently work in healthcare. I manage a dorm of kids at a treatment facility, plus I'm combat lifesaver trained from years of work as a bodyguard. I'm responsible for the meds in my dorm a few days a week, and I've got all that training. In my writing, I've either done it myself, or I sat down with people who did, and made sure I was getting it right. I'm proud to say that I make very few mistakes when it comes to that kind of stuff. It's hard work, but it pays off with far better books."
The real winner in this installment is the ease in which the author gives us little ah-ha moments. If you've read my review of Book 1, you'll know that Adrian's first (almost) encounter with a zombie is witnessing a woman being shot and killed outside his condo. Book 2 enlightens readers with great little segues that all lead back into Adrian. Not to mention, we are rewarded with getting to know the woman before the zombie.

Loved it! This book was awesome. One of the best zombie books I've read. It had an amazing story, and great characters.

I won this as a Goodreads giveaway, so thank you very much to the author, Chris Philbrook, for giving me the oportunity to read his book. And thank you very much for the Hell, Population Full sticker. Love it!

It is funny though. When I entered the giveaway for this book I also entered to win Book 1. This is Book 2, which I won, but I haven't read Book 1. So while reading it, I was missing the information of how Adrian got to where he is, but the this book stood on its own enough that I wasn't too lost.

I really liked the main character, Adrian. He was fun, interesting, and made me laugh out loud. I also liked that there was parts of the book that told what was happening in other areas of the world. I also really liked the characters of Kevin and Brian. It would be really great to find out more about them. And I know that Kevin was left off in an airplane, but he could still be alive.

With the way it ended I'm assuming and really hoping there is going to be a Book 3. I can't wait to find out what happens next, and will be there ready to read more of Adrian's story. Now though, I'm going to go order Book 1 so I can find out what happened before.

Edit: Went to post a review on Amazon for this book. Books 1, 3, AND 4 are one their way. :D

2025 Edit: Read it again and still enjoyed it. Didn't pay attention to this series for a few years though and I'm way behind. There's like 20 books in the series! And the cover has changed so I need to try and find copies with the old cover.

As the zombie apocalypses go this is a pretty good read for the fans of the genre. Though must admit: reading about the hero cleaning up abandoned houses can be captivating ... for the first three or four houses at the most . After that it becomes right out BORING!!! So more action and less inventarisation would be a welcome change. Unfortunately the third book broke me as I couldn't take pages upon pages of listing weapons, bullets and food cans any longer.

Goodbye Adrian, you are a helluva guy! Good luck staying alive.

A big step up from book one, definitely earned that extra star A big criticism I have so far is that the books are way too short and some of the things that Adrian says in his journal makes it hard for me to like him as a character. However, there are a lot of other good things that counteract the negative keeping the character interesting and moving the plot along effectively. There's a lot of good z-day stuff in here which I've always enjoyed. On to book 3.

This is one of my favorite books in the AUD series! Gilbert is one badass dude, and he's an incredible character that adds so much to the story of Adrian and his wayward band of soldiers. Make sure to buy this book and read it! You won't be disappointed :)

I bought this one and the next in the series, but I couldn't finish this one. The story was good, but the unpolished writing kept knocking me out of the story and back to reality too often. Might be ok for others, but doesn't work for me.

Despite my one and ONLY grief for this book ( and book 1 too) I am still rating this a 5 star!

Ok, so here goes the grief... when Adrian settles down the for the evening and opens his laptop to type in what has been going on for that day or past few days, the nick name he has given his journal is.... Mr. Journal.
And... well, I just cannot see the character Adrian using that type of nickname, even Tom Hanks called his basketball " Wilson".
When I went to a Thesauruses site and typed in Journal....... truthfully not a whole lot of different versions came up.
I dunno, my opinion I guess.. but I just dont like the name given for the journal.

And poor Adrian in book 2... became so used to his surrounding area, letting his guard down that he made some life threatening mistakes.
In a zombie Apocalypse.. never let your guard down, cause if you do, you will not see, hear, or even smell the zombie in a house or... get attacked by a dog who went feral.

Storyline ( as with first book) stayed very well paced and the author kept all happening around Adrian realistic.

Really kind of makes you think when you read stories such as this ;

1) would you be like Adrian and "hole" up on your own, do what all you need to do in order to survive.

or

2) be like the folks in town living at the school and pretty much " rough house" others and demand equal share of goods they found for "towns" protection.

What type would you be : the Lion or the Lamb

( Lion- leads / Lamb - follows/followers)

In process of reading book 3 currently

In the second book of Adrian's Diary, he fills in some of the gaps from the day it all started to the present. Adrian paints a very good picture of how the world has changed since the outbreak and what he's doing to survive. Unfortunately, it can get a bit repetitive. That's not to say it wasn't interesting because Adrian faces many challenges while scouting for goods. He's smart, he's funny, he's resourceful and logical, he gets hurt and he has nobody to help him as he makes a safe haven for himself. It's so easy to get caught up in the madness with him.

The thing I really like about this series is how real it feels. It definitely has a TWD feel to it. This shit is happening, what are you going to do to survive! I also like that we get little story snippets from other people. Almost every person that Adrian meets is somehow connected to some other part of the story and we get to go back and see it come together. However, I am ready to see Adrian move forward in his story and with the ending of this book we are definitely heading in that direction. Good stuff here! If you're looking for a good zombie book you should definitely check this series out.

I cannot begin to count the hours of reading pleasure that Chris has given me with Adrian's Undead Diary. His writing style makes every house that he goes to real in your mind. With each character's description, you feel like you know them, and you get so emotionally wrapped up with them because they just seem so damn REAL.
No, I am not a crazy nutjob, I am 55 years old, a nursing student and an avid reader of this genre, just check out my Kindle, every book on it is a Zombie apoc. book. and now I am happily adding each of Chris's books along with getting hard copies of Dark Recollections and now Alone No More to add to the book shelves in my living room.
If you like to read and if you like this subject. Then do yourself a favor and start your collection. Winter is coming and there is nothing better than curling up on the couch or your favorite chair or snuggling into bed and opening up the door and entering into Adrian's world. I promise you, you will NOT be disappointed!!!

I really enjoyed this book. Well written, good characters, and interesting twists and turns with just a touch or dry sense of dark humor. It also deviates from the main character to many side stories of other survivors' first days that are tangentially related to the main character. The basic story is regular guy with a little military experience (not Rambo but not a goofball either) writing a journal about the end of the world by zombie apocalypse. It isn't really journal style though because it uses the journal as a touchstone without making entries so abbreviated it's boring. The main character is lonely and writing to the journal as stress relief and addresses it as a character of it's own. It is mostly a first days story with a few side tales and flashbacks. This is the second of a series. Definitely in my top 10% for the zombie genre although I think non or new zombie fans would enjoy this one as well. This one has even more side tales, which I really enjoy, than the first one. Actually the whole second book is better than the first one which I five starred so...

Adrian's Undead Diary was my first post apocolyptic zombie book. I never would read them because I thought it would be lame. I got bored at work one day and came across his website and after reading the first entry, I was like, hey this is pretty darn good, I'm going to keep going. I didn't stop reading until my shift was over! They got no more work out of me for the day! And went home and started reading it again. I rarely can find a book that I can't put down, but this is one of them. The plot is different from alot of other zombie novels. The range of characters and Adrian just being his bad ass self will guarantee you a good read. And we can't forget about his homeboy Otis. I swear the next cat I get I'm naming him Otis!

If you have read book one in the AUD series (Adrian' s undead diary), then you will not need my review to get you to buy book two and the rest. However, if this is all new to you then buy Book One "Dark Recollections" and read through page 100. I guarantee at that point you will have laughed, cried, and become totally engrossed in the characters, the story, and most of all Chris Philbrook's writing style. After page 100 of Dark Recollections you will want to jump on amazon and order Book Two "Alone No More" and express ship it so there will be no lapse in the story when you finish book one. You will not be able to put this story down. I am suffering severe withdrawals waiting for book three "Midnight" to drop in a week.

I am SUPER excited to finally have Chris' writings on my bookshelf!!! I cannot praise his work enough, and am so happy to finally be able to put AUD alongside my other favorite books. This is the second book in the series and is just as good as the first. Even though I've read the entire story (multiple times) I still find myself saying "I'll go to sleep after just ONE more journal entry!!" Yep. It's THAT awesome. Do yourself a HUGE favor, go buy Dark Recollections if you haven't already. Then go ahead and buy this one too so that you can start it as soon as you finish the first one, because I promise you'll want to. And you probably should get the third one, Midnight, as well, so that you have something to read while we all wait on book four.

I really just cannot say enough good things about this series and am absolutely thrilled to finally see these much loved characters go to print. The introduction in this volume of the character Gilbert was like adding good paprika to Hungarian goulash. Such a rich addition to the story. I loved him immediately, but even more so since hearing he was loosely based on the author's own dad. Also the side stories add additional intriguing threads to the fabric of the tale. Excellent story telling :)

First, I have to say that the author is a really good story teller. I read this fairly quick as it was hard to put down. I do feel that I was force fed a little about how awesome Adrian (main character) is, especially from the 3rd party perspectives. It gives you the feeling that the author has a huge man crush on Adrian (which is probably supposed to be the case). With that said, Adrian is a cool and hilarious guy.

I'm a zombie book loving kind of gal. However I have needed something different to read lately, something witty, yet gory enough, basically zombie enough without being too cliche and too cookie cutter. I definitely found that with Chris Phillbrook's Adrian's Undead Diary Series. This second book does not disappoint. It's everything the first book had and more. I couldn't wait to buy the third book the second this book was done, so I didn't. third book purchased and reading started!

This is the second book of Adrian's Undead Diary, and it was incredible. New characters and lots of zombie mayhem. Chris Philbrook is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Adrian is the Terminator of the Zombie Apocalypse, he's full of whit and grit. If your looking for the best zombie story out there, then you have found it with this series. Can't wait to get the next book.

Boring. Really boring. Nothing ever happens, it’s just the MC thinking he’s funny and witty. He isn’t.

Lots of side stories for no good reason, they’re long and boring as well.

Meh.

Oh, and lots of stupid mistakes too. “You’re mom is sick” and such.

This book was better than the first. The women weren't written in a negative tone in this one. Yeah, there were some unsavory ladies but there were just as many men that were jerks too. Moving on to book 3.
