This is perhaps one of the best medical thriller I have ever read. The author clearly has profound medical background as he coherently described the unexpected, the successful and the tragic events that take place in a hospital. The last medically inclined novel that I have read really impressed me, and it was more than a year ago when I last read it. I thought Past Aghast might pale in comparison. But I was so wrong! I have never read a book that had me groping for my blanket while reading at the dead of the night. The morbidity of the characters as well as the gritty gory scenes were like magnets to my mind, they kept on appearing even in my sleep. I thought I would never wake up again.
If the main purpose of the author is to scare its readers, he very well succeeded in that area. PAST AGHAST is a pure medical thriller that will make you wish to never ever see a doctor again. Dealing with men of medical profession is an overwhelming experience, but dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is another. While I never experienced PTSD, I have known other people close to me who are having a hard time coping with the present and the reality.
The main character, Dr. Jack Bass, had experienced a lot of trauma in his past military service; he was even thought to be a nutcase. When he thought everything was under his control, he loses it. And a number of murder cases happen when he was around. Could it be possible that he committed this heinous crime?
This chilling story won't let you fall asleep.
The author, Edwin Dasso, M.D. is a brilliant storyteller, and I can say that he is also a great surgeon, based on his vast knowledge on the novel. While I was reading Past Aghast, I couldn't help but think about a lot of Michael Palmer and his books (The Patient, Silent Treatment and Side Effects were my favorites). Both have medical backgrounds but each has his own unique approach in writing. What made Dasso stand out for me is his knack of graphically detailing some scenes that might evoke stress to the reader. In my book, it means he is very effective in tingling and stimulating my imagination. That's why I am giving Past Aghast 5 stars!

Mind blowing!
I got this book as a free copy and the cover was not so eye catching hence I was not expecting much from this story. But, now I deeply regret for having any doubt on this story, for it turned out to be one of the best crime fiction I ever read!
However, the prologue again was not that provocative to me. It appeared just normal and a common war mishap. Soon after I was in the midway of the first chapter, my eyes were kind of glued to the book. Though it’s quite a thick book and much bigger than the novels I read normally, I read this in one go. Many times I tried to put down the book and tend to my other daily chores but failed miserably.
The murders in the very first few pages were horrible to come across, yet the suspense and the curiosity was well nurtured by each paragraph of the book. Being involved in laboratories for my job, I could picture the scene and the surrounding easily and was scared to death the same time relating it to my own self.
The first thought occurred to me about Mark was “poor chap”. Still I couldn’t help appreciating his each move that followed. Even after witnessing a cruel murder all of a sudden and being trapped to even get caught for such action he acted as brave and intelligent as he could.
I like the way each scene and character is blend in the story. The character development was brilliant and the plot twists were well included. The date and time at the beginning of each chapter supports the reader to have a good mental picture in a timely manner.
All in all it’s a good book. Especially for someone who likes to read about doctors and suspense related to such scenario, this would certainly be a great read. The book assures you quite an extended exposure with doctors and all other related professions in the medical industry.

Sarah was jammed with a syringe in to her jugular vein full of who knows what also.
Mark Quinn (med student, ER staff) watched in horror as Dr. Jack Bass (MD, Anesthesia Dept. Chairman, retired US Army Medical Corps, PTSD) took a huge knife to somebody.
Chief Gary Frigman (SMC University security) came to see Misty Carrel (surgery intern).
Officer Bill Turrel (SMC University security) gave Chief Frigman the bad news.
2 dead women with severed body parts & blood everywhere.
Debbie (RN) saw someone leaving in a hurry.
Dr. Lamar Waymon (Trauma OR) was furious the board members had relieved him from his duty/position of Anesthesia Dept. Chair.
He took it out on Dr. Bass (Anesthesia Dept. Chair) as they traded shifts.
Chief Frigman interviewed Mark Quinn, & then Jack.
8/17/1992, Dr. Bass took care of the 3 Latino gangbangers.
The ER staff were flabbergasted & grateful to him.
Chief Frigman came back to interview Jack again.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written medical thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great medical thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Good Page Turner
As a retired nurse who also served in the military I particularly enjoy medical thrillers. The horrors and brutality encountered in both military and trauma settings tax the medical staff as well as the patients. This was accurately portrayed in addition to the at times ludicrous political responses.

Thrilling story about greed
After disastrous events in Iraq, Jack Bass has taken the role of anesthesiology chief at a major university medical center . It's not surprising that PTSD is a part of his life . However , some folks try to take advantage of that supposedly confidential information .

"Ohhh!"
I thought this might be an interesting story of Jack Bass, MD, who is traumatized from his deployment in Iraq. I fell asleep while listening to this story on my Kindle. I was about 33 percent into the book and woke from a dream of blood and guts being torn from bodies. I decided this book was not for me and quit reading. I can still see the scenes....

Good book
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, great story with likable characters. However, the book needs some serious proofreading. Lots of typos, extra words or missing words made it distracting.

Fantastic book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants the excitement of cloak and dagger situations. I enjoyed it very much. I have read lots of books but this one keeps you on your toes till the very end.

Jack Bass is a retired colonel and MD and trouble follows him everywhere! The man has nine lives-and he is quickly using them up. It’s a great thriller that was hard to put down.

After surviving 20 years with the United States Army medical Corps, patching up every kind of battlefield injury imaginable. Colonel Jack Bass returns from his final tour of duty in Iraq with an honorable discharge for military pension and a classified military record. Col. Bass has survived some of the most horrific battlefield conditions. A soldier is ever likely to encounter Iraqi insurgents overran his forward operations surgical base killing all of the patients in the operating room and holding his entire command hostage. Col. Bass, then refuses an order from an Iraqi major, to call in reinforcements on imposition. So that he and his men can stage an ambush and in his words "eliminate as many infidels as possible from his country." Col. Bass refuses the order, adamantly, where upon he is summarily beaten and tortured on top of this. He has made to watch the murder of his chief surgical nurse and girlfriend. He manages to escape his bonds and lead all of his staff to safety. However, Col. Bass stays in the camp to get revenge on the major for killing the love of his life (which he does in the most painful manner possible). He has found several days later by a sweep and clear team rocking his girlfriend back and forth on the floor of the tent where she died, crying uncontrollably.
Col. Bass is sent to the psychiatric ward of an Army surgical Hospital for several months to treat a severe case of acute PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder). After receiving a clean bill of health and being told that his actions in Iraq will be classified in hopes of avoiding an international incident at the death of a regular army, Iraqi major, Col. Bass adds to the southern Missouri University Hospital where he will take over as chairman of the anesthesiology department. Col. Bass is hoping for a quiet existence in the civilian world, where he can pass on his vast knowledge to future generations of doctors, and hopefully make a difference in the lives of the people that he treats. However, shortly after his arrival, there is a horrific murder. In one of the hospital labs on the campus and the only evidence is a bloody lab coat and an ID badge for Jack Bass and M.D.! Did Col. Bass have a PTSD episode and think that he was in Iraq? It actually possible to forget an entire murder, or is there more than meets the eye to this story?...
Ed Dasso has written a magnificent mystery story with all the elements that cause a chill mystery fan to salivate. There is a crime scene that makes absolutely no sense, a highly unlikely suspect. Along with undertones of political and government corruption, this story will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and keep you guessing until the very last page.

I selected this book for its rhyming title.
But I couldn't get past the opening incident. It's rare for me to post a review if I've only partially read a book, but I feel justified here because I have a strong opinion from my short encounter.
Really, a guy smart enough to make it to medical school decides that, after he's survived a massacre in the hospital blood lab by hiding, the wise thing to do is to remove evidence from the crime scene, not talk to the authorities, and just head home? And whilst leaving the hospital, to remove a bloody lab coat visible in a dumpster.and then take it home, too?!
It's likely the author intends for the hapless medical student to be a prime, though innocent, suspect in two bloody lab deaths.
But the med student's stupidity in changing the crime scene and removing evidence made me lose my appetite for the book.
Really? Any reasonable adult should know to leave a crime scene intact and immediately present oneself as a witness to authorities. If a med student is forced to be that dumb to develop the author's plot, I don't want any part of it.
I could be wrong on this. But life is too short to read a book that's annoying right off the bat.

I wasn't familiar with the author but took a lark on it on a coworker's recommendation. I wasn't blown away by it as I think it started to drag a bit towards the end, but the first three quarters was really exceptional and fast paced. That said though, I did find it an entertaining read from an unknown (to me author). I'm more familiar with TV blendings of the medical and the whodunit worlds, but this book has an exceptional mix which should appeal to fans of either core genre.
The atmosphere was gritty and believable and I think I will be giving the next book in the series a try as well.

A bit disappointing, to tell the truth
I was looking forward to read this because I'm a huge fan of medical thrillers, like the Rizzoli and Isles novels by Tess Gerritsen. Unfortunately, this book didn't fully meet my expectations; the characters seemed unbelievable and the pace was really slow.
However, the book is good enough for its ebook price ($0.99). If you can make yourself believe the characters, ignore the author's style of unnecessarily italicizing words and sentences, the cliched expressions which litters the book, and the slow pace of the story, you will enjoy this. Not bad for a first novel.

If you can make yourself believe the characters, ignore the author's style of unnecessarily italicizing words and sentences, the cliched expressions which litters the book, and the slow pace of the story, you will enjoy this. Not bad for a first novel.

Average!
Though Past Aghast belongs to the “mystery thriller” genre, it fails to hold full attention till the very end. I thought it dragged on for a little longer than was necessary.
Nevertheless, it cannot be completely shrugged off as a boring or “run of the mill” novel. The research behind this book is quite creditable; the author has been able to describe many incidents that seem true to life and factually accurate. The narrative is slow and sprinkled with too many clichés, but there are many passages where you feel true sympathy for Jack Bass.
Overall, the book made for an average read, but it is definitely commendable given that it is the author’s first book.

Dr. Jack Bass, a war veteran who suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) comes under suspicion when murders start occurring at the hospital where he works. The characters feel real in this gritty medical suspense thriller where only some of the characters are what they appear to be. You will find a few clichés here and there in the book, but you will also find a very good story with twists and turns that will keep you reading well into the night. A well researched thriller that entertains and keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Past Aghast is a deeply engaging novel exploring the Effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with almost real-life details of the medical field. It is really intriguing novel where readers explore the life of a Jack Bass and the struggles that he faced during the war in Iraq. It is gruesomely detailed, well written and captivating, especially due to the fact that the vulnerabilities of the characters were portrayed to the reader, thereby, allowing the reader to sympathize with them. Very well written and well researched!

A beautifully written medical thriller. I am a lover of these sorts of thrillers . The price of the kindle book is too good to be true. As I am a book lover, this book was a gift to me from my friend and I am grateful that he chose this book. I would recommend people to read this engrossing thriller at least once in their life.

I love this book. It's a super fun, medical murder mystery that keeps you guessing. The characters are lovable, and you can't wait to see what is going to happen to them next.

A page turner that sets war experiences on trial. Author is knowledgeable about the world of medicine and understands the world of war as well. An edge of the seater that I couldn't put down.

I think this book highlights what the real medical world would look like. Great story line, with amazing characters. I have no complaint about this book. It's a great read.
