The Ghost Towns of Michigan series has become a beloved classic in Michigan's historical literature since the first volume was published in 1994. Engagingly written, with a wry sense of humor and a wealth of historical facts, these tales will inform and entertain anyone who enjoys regional history presented with a storyteller's touch.
Absolutely loved this book. Rich with history, and such interesting stories. Often as I travel through Michigan I'll come across a deserted town (or nearly deserted) and wonder: why was there a town here? Larry Wakefield, through diligent research, answers that question and supplies interesting quips about local legends as well through a very readable, storytelling style.
I borrowed a copy of this book from the Cheboygan, Michigan library. Now that I've read it, I'll be looking to purchase a copy to keep as a resource, along with volumes 1 and 3.
Living in Michigan, I thought this had some interesting stories of towns that did not survive their times back when the state was getting started to grow. It is unfortunate that our forests had to be taken down but it gave a lot of people a way to have a living with their families.
