Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yowie, Yeti...the odea that monstrous man-apes lurk in the remote forests and high mountain valleys of the world is an enduring and popular one. Hardly a week goes by without some report of a fresh encounter.

In 1793 the Boston Gazette reported a sighting of what the Cherokee call a 'chickly cuddly' or 'hairy man thing'. In 1818 the Watchman recorded the visit of a 'Wild Man of the Woods'. Ever since, hundred of eyewitness accounts of a guant, elusive beast that stands upright on its hindlegs have come flooding in.

One creature was seen tryin to catch a calf in a farmer's field; a group of them used rocks to pound the walls of a remote cabin. More recently, four teenagers in rural America were startled when a huge hairy creature landed on the roof of their car.

Complete with remarkable photos and illustrations, Sasquatch takes a fresh look at the man-apes reported to exist in North America, South America, Australia, the Himalayas and Central America. It exaomines historic sightings as well as up-to-date ones - and poses the crucial question: are they really out there?

Yes, the Sasquatch is one of the most famous horror characters ever. Does it really exist? Inside you'll read frontier tales, how the myth started in about 1958, hairy ape-men, incidents, the sightings continue, Bigfoot arrives, shooting a Sasquatch, sifting the evidence, missing remains, the real Sasquatch, the Yeti (or Abominable Snowman as called by the press), mysteries from around the world, Asian wild men, reports from China, have any Neanderthals survived?, the Australien Yowie... the author is gathering all the facts about hairy human like beasts and even has some nice black and white photos in store for us. Good stuff. Really recommended!

Despite its claim to being unbiased, this book does fall more on the side of the believer than the sceptic. All the same it is a good encapsulation of alleged sightings and evidence of the Bigfoot and other hairy wild men around the world.

For the type of book that this was......It was good. He provided a lot of information for people like me interested in the topic. The book is well written with a lot of thought into the subject. Historic facts along with eye witness accounts are abundant in this book. What I liked about it was that a skeptic or believer could enjoy it. *****SPOILER ALERT***** At the end of the book he goes thoroughly through it and lets the reader know his thoughts on the subject. He took his time and analyzed every detail of the topic. I have to say that it impressed me that he was so open and honest. There are skeptics and there are believers within the topic, either may find this book very interesting. If you are interested in Sasquatch then this is probably a good book for you to read. I don't have much else to say about it. I am still going to pursue more reading on the topic myself for my curious mind. I enjoyed it.

Sasquatch: North America’s Enduring Mystery by Matthews was an excellent read on the subject of Bigfoot! In the academic sense, Matthews wrote an excellent literature review of the phenomenon of Bigfoot type creatures in North America and around the world. In addition, he reviewed the pros and cons of current research and evidence with an open-mind without being a skeptic. He lays out all of the information in an easy to read style for everyone to understand and make his or her own conclusion. The book was free of grammatical errors and typos (which is important to help elevate the legitimacy of the subject). What I loved the most about the book was that after all the information Matthews presented he was brave enough to take a stand and state his own beliefs on the subject. I would recommend this book for any Bigfoot Researcher.

This was an awful book, one of the worst I've read in a long time. Bad writing and bad editing. Specific problems I had with this book include the almost random seeming paragraph breaks, section titles that had nothing to do with most of their section and the incessant doubling up of measurements as a way to sound more scientific. When someone is estimating something as 5 ft high, you don't have to put the exact centimeter measurement in parenthesis every time.

When I picked this up at a used book store, I did not have hopes, but I was pleasantly surprised. The author is a prolific British writer of non-fiction and history who is interested in the strange and unusual. The book is a good up-to-date compilation and would serve as a good, no-nonsense introduction to the subject of our elusive hairy friends in the forest.

This book was absolutely amazing!! What I really, really, really like was that the author made points on both sides that he does exist and that it's a hoax. It's also not a book where the side where Sasquatch does exist, the author isn't shoving it down your throat that it exist. It was incredible to hear about it. The last page really get's to ya.

'Sasquatch: North America's Enduring Mystery' is probably the very best book about Bigfoot that I've read to date. Author Rupert Matthews has written a surprisingly comprehensive look at the various primate type cryptid creatures reported the world over for literally centuries.

Informing Material

The author gives vast information about the subject. He is impartial in his research. This book provides the basic knowledge on a difficult subject matter.

Entertaining from a folklore viewpoint. It would certainly not stand up to scientific scrutiny. The editing was deficient.

Book was alright. It's a very surface explanation of Sasquatch.
