Angels

Please note: there is some swearing at the beginning of the story, as it is necessary to make Tanya a realistic character. It is not gratuitous and does not occur unless she is speaking.

Short story. When a mother loses her daughter to bullying at school, she decides to take revenge. Angels is a story of loss and the human fascination with the metaphysical world.

Bev Spicer has been writing full-time for eight years, from her crumbly Charentaise house in France. In a past life she gained a degree in English and French Literature (Keele University) and a PGCE in English methods (Queens' College, Cambridge).

She has lived in Bridgnorth, Cambridge, Rethymnon (Crete), Mahe (Seychelles), and now lives in Charente Maritime with her husband and youngest son. The next place she wants to explore is probably Spain. Her husband is very tolerant, and secretly enjoys chaos.

Bev has been a teacher, blackjack dealer for Playboy, examiner for Cambridge ESOL, secretary (various sorts - most boringly 'legal'), lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, and a Sunday checkout girl for Tesco (who allowed her to deliver surplus bakery products to the homeless – ‘every little helps’).

She loves people, reading, writing, speaking French, astronomy (quantum theory addict), gardening, travelling, and hates housework, cooking, drizzle and honey.

Bev publishes under the name Bev Spicer for her lighter books and B. A. Spicer for more literary work.

The blurb for this rather remarkable short story says it all and within its thirteen well-crafted pages a whole life is played out.
The mother in this story decides to take matters into her own hands and deal with the perpetrator herself. Her response is extreme but understandable and anyone who knows the victim of bullying at school, or anywhere else for that matter, will sympathise with her actions.
The story is sad and poignant with an unexpected ending; the characterisation is explored well and there is an almost poetic quality to some of the scene setting. Highly recommended.

For Flora James' mother, the grief and sorrow of her daughter's death is already immeasurable; yet learning that Flora died due to bullying at school sparks an unquenchable rage in her heart towards Flora's tormentors. Flora had so many dreams and desires for her future - she was preparing to go on a class trip to France soon and wanted so badly to see the Eiffel Tower while she was there. She loved nature and space, and knew so much about the planets and constellations. It is just inconceivable to her mother to think that her beautiful Flora is no longer here; not when her daughter had so much more life left to live.

These cruel children must be made to understand the gravity of what they have done. To her, and most of all, to Flora. Especially this Tanya girl - Flora's main bully. Tanya must learn her lesson - and it will be a difficult one for her to teach - but for Flora's sake, her mother will do whatever is necessary.

This is the first book that I've read by this author - although at 26 pages, it would be better classified as a short story. However, B. A. Spicer has also written several longer novels as well. I must say that I really enjoyed reading this story; I found the plot gripping and totally believable. I could certainly imagine this scenario occurring in reality. I give this story a definite A!

This gripped me right from the beginning and I read the whole story in one sitting - very unusual for me however much I love a book because my life is horrendously busy! But I was so drawn in that I had to read on.
This story sensitively and yet honestly portrays the lengths mothers will go to for their children and the emotional depth there is behind a mother/daughter relationship. I won’t say too much for fear of spoiling the story, but as a mother it spoke to me, and I identified so closely with the main characters that it was actually quite unsettling.
And that goes to show what a talented writer B A Spicer is. The writing is beautifully crafted, the characters really well drawn for such a short piece. I do think this story has real potential to be developed into something much longer.

I found out about this free eBook via Rosie's Book Review Team, and decided to give it a go.

To be honest, even though it was well written, it was too short for me. I also found the subject matter really sad, but like the way it linked to another story.

However, the message was a good one. Death can seem like a solution, but it rarely is. Life is hard and unfair at times, but it is worth fighting for. Saying this, I can't imagine how I would feel if I lost my child. Bullies are the worst!

Overall, a very quick read that gives you a taster for this authors style of writing.
