Mizushiro Setona (水城せとな in Japanese, or 水城雪可奈 in Chinese language) is a popular mangaka who started out in the dōjinshi circles.

Her first real dabble in the world of creating manga was in 1985 when she participated in the publication of a dōjinshi. She remained active in the dōjinshi world until her debut in 1993 with the short single "Fuyu ga Owarou Toshiteita" (Winter Was Ending) that ran in Shōgakukan's Puchi Comic magazine.
Though her current drawing style is high on the aesthetic value, her earlier works had less finesse. Regardless of the lesser emphasis on the visual elements in her earlier works, her popularity grew largely due to her unparalleled grasp for storytelling. Her works are noted for their slightly askew plots and deep exploration of the human psyche. Even her lighthearted Shōjo works usually have darker underlying elements. With an incomparable ability to craft stories that puzzle, sadden, assure, pervert, and move the depths of one's heart, she has gained a cult-like following. Her works include shojo, josei, and yaoi, and have been translated into multiple languages, including English, Italian, French and German.

As if I needed a reminder, this volume reminded me why I love this series.

summary--Mashiro continues to believe Kureha and Sou are a secret item, despite Sou's negation - and his suspicions are confirmed and he is devastated when he spies them sharing a secret kiss. What Mashiro doesn't know is that Sou does this to make him miserable and Keruha goes along to get a revenge of sorts at Mashiro's ability to even smile following her dumping him. Mashiro confides in Sempai (the older, respected Kendo captain from previous volumes) that the person he thought he cared about (Sou) may not be the right one if they can so easily share a kiss with another (Kureha)...could they really be meant to be together, etc. The dream class continues, and strangely, Mashiro has a parasite growing from him that spews gossip, and Mashiro wears 6 beads instead of 3 because of this. Kureha has taken the form of a dead tree, representing her broken heart, but Mashiro doesn't realize it is her until he hurts her feelings, forcing her to leave the dream. The knight (Sou) attacks the parasite, thus eliminating Mashiro from the dream. We learn (or perhaps remember?) that Kurosaki Sempai is also in the dream, although we rarely see him and do not know his purpose. He is horrified by this last scene.

Mashiro and Kureha later have a confrontation, after she insults him he hits her to the horror of her friends. She is unaffected, however, and tells Sou it proves he is really a girl because otherwise he would not have hit her. She decides to go home to recolve some family problems. Mashiro tries to take a step forward by inviting Sou over to his room and show himself dressed in the girls uniform. However, Sempai shows up beforehand and Mashiro is embarassed...and hesitantly tells him the truth...that he is more or less a she. Sempai is a good listener and tells him he is very cute. Sou shows up, and Mashiro yells for him to leave (even though he was invited). Sou sees Sempai leave the room; tires of the game and gives Mashiro the cold shoulder the next day. We begin to learn more about Sempai and how he bears a heavy weight of expectation from his father, which is probably the reason he is in the dream class.

It escaltes further soon after at Kendo practice when Mashiro continues to share his problems that perhaps the person he thought he cared for isn't the right one...Sempai takes this as an invitation and kisses him. Mashiro questions his feelings and wonders is Sempai would be better for him. He thinks himself bad and hypocritical, albeit confused.

Mashiro learns that Sou's sister (also in the dream) goes to a girls' school across town, and he thought students in the dream had to go to his school. In the dream she reveals more of her and Sou's chlidhood and how they need each other, because they have a mother who cares more for her career than for them. She also reveals that Sou's first time was with her and that the only reason he goes to other girls is to escape the reality that they belong together. This confession forces Mashiro from the dream, and Sou is angry that his sister spilled the secret. Mashiro confronts Sou and says it sickens him about the truth with his sister and that he doesn't want to see him with others because he loves him. We are left with Sou's stunned expression and his sister's worried one.

Masahiro tries to sort out his feelings, realizing he does love Sou. He faces him, dressed in a way he’s never dressed before, only someone else stumbles upon him in that moment. In the end, Masahiro wasn’t any happier with the girl he tried to be than the boy he thought he should become. Kureha and Sou are ideals for him of what female and male are, but neither of his lovers are ideal. Kureha decides to face her dark side, her past, a times in an almost spiteful way, but she’s confronting the spite, too. Masahiro finds himself facing Sou’s sister, Ai, more and more in the dream, but the two of them have secrets which Masahiro has only scratched the surface of.

There was a lot of Sou in this volume. This time, it was Sou’s turn to be cornered and vulnerable. Kureha was making a comeback while Mashiro was trying to. Readers also got to see a more sensitive side of Kosaka-sempai via the frightening situation in his own homelife. He showed how forceful he could be, expressing a romantic interest in Masahiro. Only Masahiro has decided whom he loves, only his behaviour has been quite contradictory, even if his feelings are not. The plotline ended on a cliffhanger, leaving me wanting to know what will happen next. This book was perhaps more surreal than any other we’ve seen in the series, contradicting much of what we’ve seen before, or does it? At any rate, I’m eager to read what’s to come.

I love Kureha's hard work on her path to recovering from her PTSD -- "Do I just want to stay a hurt little girl, so that no matter how I act or what I do, I'll always be forgiven?" It is so rare to see fiction of any kind showing both sides of the trauma coin.

Also Sou and Ai and the Knight and Mashiro, sure, I guess they're in here too. But really my favourite part of this is Kureha working so hard.

What exactly does it mean to be a girl or a guy? It is as simple as long hair, a cute smile and a frilly skirt? Or does being a woman require something else? Is a man simply a sense of duty, an urge to protect and a stoic attitude that can win any girl? If those images and ideals are stripped away, then what is left?

I'm not a fan of the way Sou and Kureha treat Mashiro. Mashiro has issues, that much is obvious - not that Sou and Kureha don't, don't get me wrong - but whatever Mashiro does, however he reacts, it's always wrong in their eyes and that really isn't helping Mashiro deal. Damn if you do, damn if you don't, that's how Mashiro must feel.

In the last book, a lot of annoying things happen. Now, good things happened? I'm confused. I'm glad that the sempai is in it more and has HIS story, now. Plus, we learned even more about Kureha who really annoyed me, before.

Things happened really fast and randomly, though! I hope they prove to have a point in the next one. As of now, I'm confused but happy? Well... it all depends on what happens in the next volume.

So, here's the spoilers. MAJOR spoilers! This is basically the whole thing right here:

Sou kisses Kureha to "push Mashiro away" because he's tired of the games and basically hanging off the edge of a cliff for Mashiro. Mashiro is jealous, they are rumored to have been going out.

O.O The Senpai's in the Dream World!?!?!?! Yes, well, we find out that his life at home is pressuring and abusive in the mental sense. He's pretty messed up, actually. But I still love him :)

Kureha leaves to go home (we find out more about here there) and has a mental breakdown that is drawn so well I almost cry, too.

Mashiro admits to himself that he wants Sou (FINALLY! jeez...). Okay, so this is his last chance (he doesn't know that but we as readers do). He invites Sou over to his room after talking to him (which he hasn't since Kureha and Sou have been "going out"). Sou comes in "to talk" but we as readers know that Mashiro plans to show himself as a girl in a girls uniform which he keeps in his closet.

He has it on and then there's a knock on the door... it's the senpai!!! He finds out and is immediately okay with it. I did tear up a bit here, actually. Just... a life of thinking you are so wrong and how easily this one guy says it's fine is just... wow.

Okay, so here's where it sucks. Sou knocks on the door next and now that Mashiro feels better, he's not ready to show Sou this right now and the senpai comes OUT OF THE ROOM AND TELLS HIM TO GO AWAY! Mashiro doesn't get it, but Sou is finally finished (I was devastated and annoyed that he couldn't just explain)

Mashiro goes to practice and senpai basically almost kisses him but says it's a joke and then does it anyway. BUT, that's left to the dirt! Nothing ever happens again between them... it's almost over, though.

Here's were it gets even better! Mashiro finds out about why Ai is still in the dream world and Ai tells him everything when they meet in the Dream World. He's disgusted because of Sou and Ai's relationship and well... he "dies" and wakes back up in the nurse room. He IMMEDIATELY flies over to find Sou and confesses his love for him (random? I don't know... what about the SENPAI!??!?!). Ai sees this and everyone's shocked and... the end.

But I honestly think I liked it.

After a long wait, things are finally starting to happen again in the world of After School Nightmare! Mashiro is finally starting to come to terms with his/her double gender & starts to make tentative moves towards the person of her choice. Meanwhile, Kureha also starts trying to make progress with her past as well as trying to move forward with... Sou?

I tried to put down as much as I could without spoiling anything, since half of the fun of this series is seeing what the author can throw in our path to confuse the heck out of us readers. While there are one or two points where I've gotten frustrated that things move slowly or aren't yet fully explained, I've never had a volume that dissapointed me... and this one hasn't let me down either! With only 3 move volumes to go, the pace has started to pick up & more secrets are starting to be revealed. Some are truly surprising while others were ones that could sort of be guessed at (as far as some of the particulars of Sou's relationship with his sister). The most surprising part has to be the spoiler page for the next volume where the knight is shown with the mask off... and I have to say I was shocked! A few new characters are shown in the dreaming world, one of which is a mystery & one of which is plainly visible.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Only if they've been following the series (which I definately recommend). This strange series will definately appeal to the fans of series such as Evangelion or FLCL.

As Ichijou Mashiro’s hard kept secret is revealed to his classmates, Mashiro’s dream world is turned upside down. The after-hours class Mashiro signs up for is not at all what he expects it to be. Passing the class is his only chance of graduation and the horrors he finds there are only the beginnings to the mysteries yet to be revealed.

This dark series is filled with controversial and emotional issues that take the reader on a journey through what the characters are feeling and what they experience. There is always some sort of twists throughout causing the reader to re-think about the issues involved.

Interesting concept to say the least! The story itself invokes a creepy mysterious concept taking place throughout the school. I was impressed with the complexities of the students and situations involved throughout the series. Reading this series the author does an amazing job of making the reader feel the characters pain and suffering.

After long long waiting, information spills and we are a couple steps closer to the end.
I had always thought that 'Sempai', the Kendo captain was an adult, not a 17-year old boy. :/
Now instead of Mashiro and Kureha, I am shipping Mashiro and his Sempai. :3
I'm a little surprised that Mashiro's Sempai, (still don't know/remember his name...) never mentioned being in the dreams and seeing Mashiro hacked down by Sou's sword.
What is up with the gossipy parasite? Is it another person who just automatically attaches themselves to other people, or just something completely random? It nice to have a couple extra new things, but there should be an explanation behind it soon.
Kureha also has daddy issues, which further explains her fear of men, and finally Ai reveals an explanation of what's going on between herself and her brother Sou.
It's really sad that Kureha's dream-self became a dead tree, which means she still cares greatly about Mashiro, but yet he's keep crawling back to Sou. -_-
And one last thing......
MASHIRO DONT FRIGGIN SAY THAT TAKE IT BACK! TAKE IT BAAAACK!!!

Ichijo's still angsting. Am I boy or a girl? Though he explains in this one that his top half is XY and his bottom half is XX. Which is at least an explanation. But it still doesn't tell me why he doesn't have boobs yet.

He decides to show annoying guy himself dressed up in a girl's uniform. But, uhoh, kendo sempai shows up instead! And is, like, totally cool with him being half boy and half girl. Or seems to be anyway.

There is a kiss in Ichijo's future!

Meanwhile, in the dream world, his ex-girlfriend's a dead tree. And he's got this weird gossipy parasite head growing out of his body. Yea.. I have no idea what that's all about.

And we get some of the backstory behind why annoying guy has a clingy, incesty sister.

next book in the series.

china/japan, and dream realm

i swear he needs to pick a person to love and just stay with them.

mashiro is dynamic. stupid, changes his mind a lot, stupid. page 64 "But now i know the dead tree symbolized her heart. even since we broke up kureha kept on laughing and smiling"

it doesnt matter what you see on the outside because on the inside is always different.

dont use reading strategy.

i loved it so dramatic.

Marchio is finally coming to terms in alot in this book, his sexuality, his love life and beyond his social life. This book is very shocking, very controversy.

So far this is the best book out of After School Nightmare. I love the author, characters, plot, pictures, and the oddness of the whole book.

I can't wait to read volume 8 of this series.

I have so far been entertained by the surrealistic dreams and Mashiro's gender-conflict, but this volume found just about everyone behaving like an idiot, which is less enchanting. I'm still dying to find out what happens next though.

Hmm... yeah..... It's nice to know all about Sou's past and all, but is it just me or did Mashiro's declaration seem to just come out of nowhere? Somehow I'm starting to think that the author is just trying to come with just any plot device to prolong the series's circulation.
