An excellent relationship book that invites you to explore the dominant patterns and behavioural issues that exist. I read this book whilst going through a divorce and found it a real eye opener. Practical wisdom and much food for thought about taking responsibility for our part in dysfunctional patterns to improve communication and harmony. Lots of a-ha moments. Recommend.

I first read this book in 2005. It was life changing..I know that I changed for the better..I became a better person..And still continually strive for improvement..
"Good relationships of all kinds are made - they don't just happen. Relating to another person is a skill which can be learned - and Really Relating gives sound practical advice. This book continues to help thousands change the way they relate.
It shows you how to really look at yourself and your relationship, how to create lasting intimacy and how to make a good relationship...
This is a book to read and re-read over and over again.."
It's true we all have our own definition of love..That is something to understand right from the beginning of a relationship..Spending time together..Building on a foundation of Romantic Love that is more spiritual in nature..Thus providing a lasting relationship when compared to a physical one which is always temporary and fleeting..
I think of how all things were created spiritual by the Lord and it was good..The main point of this book is learning how to be our "Real Self" "the whole unique individual person that is you..The core..
What is important about this book is that every relationship can work out their differences and have a marriage that lasts..In the ideal marriage relationship each person has the opportunity to be his or her real self. It is in practice, a real partnership where each person is free to develop both as a person as an equal half of a relationship characterised by:
- both people are able to be independent, confident, and have high self-esteem
- both partners are in pursuit of self understanding, self development and the discovery of the real self
both seek to develop a mature love marriage
- both are involved in the 3 R's of marriage: Responsibility, Real self and romance
- both want to know each other's deeper thoughts and feelings
- both self disclose from their awareness (awareness wheel diagram in book)
- conflict exists, but skills are sought to deal honestly and assertively with the differences
- sexual intimacy is often rich and varied with time devoted to this area
- emotional depth is present and desired
- time is made together
- both are interested in the development of their full potential in all areas
- the partnership is marked by equality and high respect for each other.
This relationship framework allows partners to give and recieve love in an atmosphere of mutual trust. Intimacy levels are high..mature love develops to a deep level, and a lasting and joyful marriage results, yet it is absolutely essential that you develop your real self to achieve this goal.
What I also like about this book is that the authors of the book ran the "School of Marriage" and radio talkback show in Sydney, NSW.
Definitely worth it's weight in gold..

Re-reading after twenty years. It is a useful book written very clearly. LGBTI people may be put off by all of the examples being heterosexual couples but the principles of relating are the same.
