This simple paperback is blends perfectly a great deal of depth and detail describing the nuances of conflict that lead up to the spark which set off World War II. Beginning in the mid 1930s and extending to the fall of Paris in June 1940, Rothberg offers first-hand accounts, pictures, and quotations illustrating - without belaboring or lingering on an single conflict - all of the moving parts of the Axis' buildup and conquering of Europe. It provides the perfect balance of depth and brevity to understand the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War in Finland, the Sudeten Crisis / Munich Diktat, Italy's war in Ethiopia, and other points.

I highly recommend this extremely accessible primer to WW2 for anyone who wants to broaden their understanding of the conflicts that preceded the invasion of Poland.

I picked this 4 book set a long time ago and read it back then. I reread it and enjoyed it thoroughly. A great summary of the build-up and destruction of France with excellent photos.
