Surviving Broken Promises covers the life of Cassandra, a sixteen year old black female, up through the age of thirty-three. Cassandra's character starts off young and naive but she eventually progresses into a very intelligent woman. It tells how her life was drastically changed due to broken promises. Cassandra survived, endured and prospered through being a teenage mother, a battered wife, adultery, being the other woman, an inter-racial relationship and mental illness.
"Surviving Broken Promises" is a story about Cassandra, a sixteen-year-old from a broken home. Cassandra is naïve when it comes to the opposite sex. She makes the same mistakes multiple times with different men because she is so trusting. Not helping matters is the fact that her relationship with her mother is really rocky. Cassandra's mother does some things that you will not believe, but Cassandra is determined to be a good mother and raise her children well.
The older Cassandra gets, the more she realizes that she needs to expect more from the people she deals with. She can look back and see the progress that she has made over the years.
Cornelia Gibson's "Surviving Broken Promises" tells the story of what many young women go through being a teenage mother. It has its share of errors. There is also the overuse of the word "then" and the lack of transitional words which did affect the flow of the story. Overall, however, it's a good book.
