This is children’s book with a fairy tale feel. Pelusa was stolen by a witch at birth. Her parents are under a spell and cannot find her. The witch is, of course, mean and Pelusa innocent and kind.

Pelusa finds a broken down doll in a garbage bin and calls her “Angelina.” The little doll has one leg and is simply not well put together, but Pelusa loves this doll and decides to be her mother. The neighbors take care of Pelusa by feeding her and giving making up for the lack of attention she gets at home.
Pelusa encounters the tired and hungry Holy Family on their journey (perhaps to Egypt???) and she shares her delicious stew with them. The Baby Jesus takes Angelina the doll and blesses her, immediately Angelina is restored and we come to see that the doll is Pelusa’s guardian angel.

The Blessed Mother tells Pelusa that Angelina will lead her to her parents and she will be restored to her original family.

Angelina is an adorable character who fights off a black bird tempting Pelusa to move away from her journey and instructs Pelusa to stay the course. Angelina does steal the show here, because she's a funny little fighter. This is ok as it sparks the imagination.

I love the idea of a doll blessed by the Lord and becoming a guide and angel. This fits right into the psyche of a little child.

The pictures are lovely in this book.

This book has me thinking about stories that can incorporate the wonder of the Baby Jesus and children.
