I expected this book to be much more in-depth than it is. This is a very basic book that is possibly of interest to people who are new to Facebook and don't understand what features are available on Facebook or how to enter profile information, etc. If you've been on Facebook for any time, however, you will quickly learn most of this information just by poking around and seeing what your friends are doing. I picked up a couple of tips that relate to doing business on the web and using Facebook for marketing and advertising, but it just didn't cover the depth of information that I was looking for.

This is one of those library books that I should probably buy for myself, since it should be referred to often. Except they've just changed parts of Facebook around, so who knows if any of it will work.

It did clear up some question for me though.

Not too exciting, but I think I have all the information to finally get my own facebook and start poking people. Even my Mum has been on it for a year or so. I am sloww to adapt to new technology.

Not many books written on how to use this social network. This one does help you get through all the essentials in a pretty understandible fashion.

A friend learned that I’d just joined Facebook and loaned me this book. Of course, within a week of my joining, some aspects of Facebook had changed. And today, as I write this review, I find my home page and profile look completely different. So, did the book help me?

I guess what I’d really like is an online Facebook manual—one that updates every time they update the site. But this book has a second edition coming out in March 2010, so maybe that would solve my problems.

As a Facebook newbie, I simply inserted information into my profile, responded to other people’s “stuff” that appeared in my “feed,” and wondered how anyone wrote all those articles since all I could see was a status bar rather like Twitter’s, or Gather’s, or any other ning’s.

My usual technique with any kind of software is get comfortable with doing very little then slowly start pushing buttons. The Missing Manual was valuable to me in that it suggested what sort of things I should be able to do, thus encouraging me to click those strange words with a little more confidence that they might do what I wanted.

“Note.” That’s like a “post,” or “article.” Okay. That makes sense. And maybe there really is a way to link Facebook to my blog so I don’t have to write the same post twice. (Three times if I want to post it on Gather too, but I usually don’t.) The Missing Manual didn’t give me the right instructions, but it pointed me in the right directions to succeed.

I found Facebook networks after reading the first few chapters, but I couldn’t find my local network no matter how hard I tried. Maybe they don’t have them anymore, or maybe I’ll find them soon just like I found groups, which seemed more useful, maybe. And I almost learned the meaning of pages, even creating my own one to advertize my books. One day I’ll figure out how to make it look more professional, and I’ll probably use the Missing Manual to help me guess what’s possible.

I’m glad I read the manual. I think it’s helped me get further, faster, though I still have a long way to go. Facebook’s fun, and my friend assures me it’s helped her friend to sell her stuff. Anything that helps me sell…

I was looking forward to reading this book, so I guess I was destined to be disappointed. The first half of this book is quite basic. It explains how to register, find contacts, access Marketplace, things I worked out to do over the course of a couple of hours. I guess there are people who do need to have their hands held. This book is for them.

The second half of the book is more promising, however. Here we find useful things on Applications, Collaborating tools even how to Advertise on Facebook. Setting up Networks occurs in the first half of the book and that is useful too. Finally there are the Facebook related web sites.

Worth reading just to understand how to set privacy settings on FB. Have you changed your default FB privacy settings? Have you limited the information that FB supplies to search engines? Have you limited how much of your information is available to applications that your friends are using? If not, it might be worth getting a copy of this from your local library and investing a few hours. I would never have even seen many of the privacy settings, they are nested so far down in the application.

This book is helping me make the most of facebook. There is more to the site than games and silly applications, and if one wants to use the site as a promotional tool, one has to learn how to use the features to best advantage.

Since I recently joined Facebook, I needed to learn more about its workings.
This book was helpful, but not real easy to follow. I learned most of what I wanted to know about my use of Facebook, and disregarded the "stuff" that I have absolutely no interest in using.

The book is great on the basics of Facebook. It is the quintessential "how-to" for the novice and intermediate user. The author touts that this is the book that should have been in the box, he was right!

Probably helpful to someone who has never used Facebook (or any social networking site) before, but very, very basic.

Did not really read - just thumbed through. Info is now too dated. Too many changes to FB for this manual to be a lot of help.

Good intro to FB with visuals but of course the privacy tools and some other options not current.

As it claims, this is a manual that will guide you through all the basics of Facebook usage. Thorough and adequately detailed for even the most inexperienced of us.

This had good advice. I only wish I had read it before I logged on Facebook.
