Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

This book never fails to provide exciting and varied combat. The character interactions are always so sweet and satisfying. Even the annoying characters (bowl cut) still find a way to be endearing. Love this book!

This is a review of the entire series.

Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.

Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.

Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.

On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.

Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.

Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.

Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.

The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.

The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.

On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.

Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...

Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.

I know this will be weird this being my first review of the series, but here it goes. It has been a few years since i have read the entire series of Naruto. Started again last month and trying to finish by the end of the year.
In this three in one volume, we start off with the guys, Naruto, Neji, Kiba, Choji and Shikamaru as leader, out to get Sasuke back. Choji has just barely defeated his opponent when he collapses, as the rest try to catch up to the group sounding Sasuke. Each one backing off to fight an individual opponent or in Kiba's case two opponent's in the same body. WOW tough break! and when they finally get it down to one blocking their path a new comer by the name of Kimimaro. Another underling to Orochimaru. He seems tougher then anyone naruto has come up agains yet, well maybe except Gaara. Who So happens to show up in the nick of time and save not naruto but Lee from Kiminaro. Lee shows up out of know where and decides to try to distract naruto's opponent so that naruto can chase after Sasuke. Who burst out of the coffin they had him in and ran off ignoring Naruto calling him. This volume ends with Sasuke finally stopping. I Gave is volume a 4 out of 5 just because it didn't have my favorite character in it.

Goddamn VIZ, this "Potion Punch" shit is just pissing me off. Like, it's one thing to censor it on Toonami, when the anime had its violence toned down already. But you have Kiba stab himself with a kunai and steadily bleed out while fleeing from Sakon and Ukon, but god for-fucking-bid we allude to Lee drinking a bit of sake and doing a Drunken Fist style!!! Like, Kimimaro is ripping his own flesh up all nasty to summon bones, but underage drinking is still a major no-no. Kishimoto isn't even condoning underage drinking! And, for that matter, twelve-year-olds reading this would probably not have sake in their parents' liquor cabinet, quite frankly. And sake is usually only like 12% alcohol....

Anyway, I did choke up with HYPE when the Sand trio joined up for the ongoing fights. Part of the issue of taking so long to read this manga is I could swear we've already seen The Art of the Iron Maiden, but I guess not. I'm either thinking of playing Ultimate Ninja Storm 1 when I bought the remaster on PS4 some months ago, or else I'm remembering flipping through this volume ages ago when I first bought it....

The Sound Four are an interesting set of "bosses" to me, partly because of how imbalanced they are. Jirobo is pretty weak compared to literally everyone else. Dude barely has any techniques. By comparison, Kidomaru has such a wider skillset. Actually, he has more techniques than Tayuya or Sakon/Ukon, but he seems to be weaker than them(?). The order in which the Sound Four are faced raises questions about the strength of their Konoha opponents. There's a Saint Seiya Gold Saints thing going on here where everyone is taking turns fighting rather than having Naruto do all the legwork or something. But it seems the Sound are dropping off their representatives from weakest to strongest. Reasonably, Choji may be the weakest of the Leaf gang, at least insofar as his power is brute force with little in the way of tactics. But does this make Neji the second-weakest? Surely, Neji must be stronger than Kiba or Shikamaru, so is the idea just that Kiba's nose and Shikamaru's mind are more important than Neji's eyes, for the sake of the mission? But then, what does it say when Kiba and Shikamaru need to be bailed out by Sand fighters?

The opening Author Comment for Volume 24 mentions how, at the same point in Dragon Ball, Son Goku was about to face off against Ginyu. In this sense, the Sound Four + Kimimaro parallel the Tokusentai. Jirobo is basically the designated jobber set to face the weakest hero, like how Gurudo fought Son Gohan and Kuririn. The parallels kind of fall apart after that, though. I mean, the tub thing with Sasuke could be a stand-in for the Dragon Balls. But the way the fights work doesn't actually match DB.... Like, Gurudo is ultimately killed in one strike by Bejita. Then Bejita fights Rikumu just long enough for Son Goku to arrive and finish Rikumu then basically solo Jīsu, Bāta, and Ginyu himself. But I suppose this shows the gap in power-levels between DB and Naruto, as well as what may be imagined as a more careful balance within this manga among its cast; Naruto has a lot of chakra but he isn't currently vastly superior to his peers, whereas Son Goku and Bejita outclassed literally everyone else until more their sons could turn Super Saiyajin.

Honestly, Jirobo, Kidomaru, and the twins don't feel as "significant" of enemies as dudes like Zabuza and Haku. Tayuya and Kimimaro both feel more worthwhile, though. But it's also kind of weird when you consider this is nearing the end of the pre-timeskip story; the Sound Four and Kimimaro are technically like penultimate bosses here, but while they're pretty cool overall they don't feel as "weighty" as they probably should. Maybe. I don't know, because I don't really know how the endgame of the entire manga will play out, so maybe the Sound Four would hold up in retrospect.

Anyway, going with a Gold Saints parallel, we get new techniques for our heroes. Choji has his magic weight-loss power last volume. Neji... uh, did he do anything different? Did he not do 8 Trigrams 64 Palms against Naruto? I don't remember. More significantly, Kiba and Akamaru can combine into a giant two-headed wolf, which is really dope, and somehow I forgot about and/or it may have been omitted from the PS2 games I played(?). Shikamaru uses his Shadow Molestation Jutsu against Tayuya, which I think is new (that's not what it's called, btw). I guess we hadn't seen Temari use Summoning before, though I could have sworn she did it against Tenten but that fight is offscreen in the manga so I don't know what I'm talking about. As mentioned above, I thought we'd seen Iron Maiden before, but I guess not. Gaara does a whole bunch of shit I don't feel like listing. Lee has the "Potion Punch." We don't really see Naruto do anything too new yet.

There's a character popularity contest sometime during this omnibus, which is the source of the back cover illustration, featuring Sakura and Hinata in prominent positions. The two are not present at all in this omnibus, iirc. There are chapter cover pages featuring the girls, including Tenten and Ino as well, but it's funny how they don't get to do shit this arc. Like, the Sound Four have a woman fighter, but she goes against Shikamaru because the Leaf party is a sausage-fest. It kind of avoids the "girls must fight girls" thing in a lot of shōnen battle manga, at least until the Sand kids show up and Temari happens to join Shikamaru, making the battle end up a bit of a cat-fight (not really, since Temari basically one-shots Tayuya, but still). To my understanding, Sakura and Hinata will both get pretty strong after the timeskip, but right now it almost feels like it's worthless to accept girls into the ninja academy. I also have no idea if Ino or Tenten ever become relevant in combat, but I kind of hope so a little bit, if not mainly because Tenten's ability to summon weapons is pretty cool and no one else really uses weapons beyond shuriken and kunai.

Love the character development and time we get to spend with the supporting characters while we are in pursuit! It is a lot of fun and the action is legit so cool and entertaining. The villains are so great and its a shame we get to spend so little time with them. Seeing characters that had been missing for a good second back on the pages was quite nice and made for great plot twists; especially how much it pushed one of the best actions pieces the series has done so far. I love this series and I have one more volume to go before I take a break from the series for a while.

Volume 22

Neji's fight we the sound ninja is my second favorite out of the SN fights. I really enjoyed the self-sacrificing angst. That ending, with Orochimaru, scares the crap outta me.

3/5

Volume 23

This volume has 3 fights: Kiba/Sakon/Ukon, Shikamaru/Tayuya, and Naruto/Kimimaru. I love how Shikamaru has shown a new jutsu, but is paired up with a female again! Kiba/Akumaru tag team these creepy twins. KIMIMARU'S BONE TRICK IS SUPER GROSS AND INTERESTING ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

4/5

Volume 24

Rock Lee! Gaara! Kankuro! Temari! This volume was full of fights and strategies. AND SASUKE. Holy crud!!

Naruto was in an intense battle against kimmimaru and each of Naruto's comrades were fighting they're own enemy. These were intense battles they battled and each of them got beat down and as soon as they were about to die backup came and saved them. Later in the book they destroyed their enemy and were able to finally retrieve Naruto.

rock lee is back baby, also the team up with the sand iconic. kimimaro’s kekkei genkai manipulating his bones was crazy, and the scene where he literally pulled out his spine had me shook.

Lastly, i love the interaction between Gaara and Lee, and after the fight his words, “even if you know he’s evil… you can’t just overcome your own solitude.”

I enjoyed this volume, but I really feel like this fight is being dragged out a little too long. That, and I don't much care for the concept of fighting with your own bones. It's disgusting, and I have trouble believing that such rules could exist, even in fantasy.

It's nice to see the Sand people back and helping. My favorite team up was Rock Lee and Gaara, especially in how Rock Lee had to admit that his battle with Gaara did a number on him.

Though it would be nice to know if Choji and Neji made it.

This was very good and engaging. Yet the art style was on point and increased in quality. Yet, in some areas, the animé was better and when you read it you will know those. However there are areas that are far more disturbing in the manga than the animé and had a greater point.

Dude I like you, don't be a douche. Respect the fighter no matter their gender.

LEE!! I was a bit confused though because they kept talking about potions. From the comment section I've learned it's a censorship thing. They changed the translation which feels silly because minors killing people is okay but them drinking is a big no no?

I enjoyed this particularly because we got to see the newly obtained abilities of various ninja including Neji, Shikamaru, Kiba and Akamaru as well as Chōji and Naruto, the latter having learned how to form a rasengan or a swirling ball of energy through the help of Jiraiya. It's hilarious how little importance Sakura is given considering she's one of the 3 members of unit 7. The sound ninja four try to take Sasuke to Orochimaru for this villain to successfully be reborn, stronger than ever however these 5 strong ninja as well as the sand ninja who have a debt to pay Konohagakure, Gaara, Temari and Kankurō overpower the sound ninja as well as another virtually immortal character called Kimimaro. Gaara defeats her but almost expends all his chakra which is a first for such a strong character! Naruto tries to run after Sasuke to help him when he escapes however Sasuke pays no heed and is almost determined to help Orochimaru. The reason as to why is still unknown to me. Sasuke is certainly more noble than this however he was either brainwashed or has some kind of wish to become stronger so as to beat Itachi and is not realising the expense. I appreciated how Rock Lee's operation went well although I hardly doubted Tsunade, the fifth Hokage. Rock Lee also gives Naruto some time to escape from Kimimaro after taking Sasuke prior to the arrival of Gaara of the sand. Kimimaro is one creepy bitch, summoning bones out of his body at will and using them as weapons. Kabuto and Orochimaru were using Kimimaro's body as a replacement until Sasuke's would be available. They were rather worried when Kimimaro died and now the pressure to find Sasuke is larger. The sound ninja four were obliterated relatively easily. Two of them by sand ninja, two by leaf ninja.

A fantastic minus set as the fight with the Sound Ninja's continue. We see the swinish of Choiji's fight as well as the beginning and end of the fights Neigji, Kiba, and Shikamaru get into. However it's Kimimaro and Gaara who steel the spotlight in this volume. However I still feel that the anime is better at conveying the action and drama of this particular arc but either way it's always good to see the Sand Ninja siblings appear again.

Naruto es excelente en su historia completa, hay arcos muy buenos, excelentes y el giros impresionantes. Definitivamente leerlo en su cúspide de atención a la trama es mucho mejor que tener la paciencia de soportarse los episodios relleno del Anime.
